Loopholes you've found

A video on this just came up on Reddit and I thought I bet MN will have loads to share. I can't think of any myself at the moment but I am sure some with come to me.

I especially love a good freebie so I'm sure I must have found some in that area before.

There must be loads...

Here is the post which inspired this post. fb.watch/3PY7VOHvZn/
@QueenOfLabradors I think that is how Waitrose caught on. Too many people buying this sort of bargain without any other shopping so the till actually told the cashier to give the customer money back. Happened to my mum.
yy it was Waitrose! I'd gone in for milk and bread and a quick look round the Yellow Stickers... Grin My bill was still positive, but now we're talking about it I do remember buying a couple of packs of reduced sausages, didn't even realise they were on a multibuy, and getting charged minus five pence for the whole basket - since cashier was a dear friend, I shot back onto the shop floor and brought her a couple of packs to stash under her till until her shift was over.

BalloonSlayer · 24/02/2021 21:13

In Australia they don't have 1 cent or 2 cent coins. The smallest coin is 5 cents. So in the Supermarket they round your shopping to the nearest 5 cents. If you only bought, say, one onion, at whatever per kilo, and it was only 2 cents, therefore you could get it for free.

Many years ago we bought a new kitchen from a well known DIY retailer. It cost £2600. It was installed in late December. We took out 6 months' interest free credit.

When the 6 months was nearly up, I asked the company how to pay (pre-internet days). They said I didn't owe them anything. I called again, was told the same. I then wrote to them, and they still said I owed them nothing.

I kept the money separate for several years, for when they would realise I was right. They didn't. When we were leaving that house, I was looking over the invoice for it, and saw that the rep who came to the house to measure up etc had completed the invoice for Dec 1998 (say), with the 6 month interest free period to end in...Jun 1998. So, I assume it was never picked up as a payment pending.

Although, not a loophole as such, just thought I'd tell you about it anyway!

Corrag · 24/02/2021 21:43

Do Tesco not do "Double The Difference" anymore? It's a shame if they've stopped doing it. I've had loads of bargains via that scheme. When I used to shop regularly at Tesco I would look out for things, especially electrical stuff. If you could find half price offers that had expired you'd end up getting it for nothing. I've had two cordless phones for free. A sat nav. Dolce Gusto machine. Various toiletries, bottles of wine etc.

I ordered a fire from very, it was taking a long time for delivery so I cancelled, they refunded me and weeks later the fire turned up!

ColdCottage · 24/02/2021 22:22

@Tinkerbellflowers I just tried this too. It works. I had a few small items I wanted but didn't want to pay £3.99 for delivery. Super thank you.

So glad the Next hack works for you. I wonder how soon they will get wind of it and change it 🤫

grassisjeweled · 24/02/2021 23:15

Most of the time if you pay online for something and say you have student discount they don't actually ask for proof.

Used it work at Boots and we had loads of people scamming the 3 4 2 thing, getting refunds for more than they paid etc etc. Same woman used to be in every day.

ColdCottage · 25/02/2021 20:07

@grassisjeweled I did wonder how they checked.

A handwritten note with a complaint generally gets a discount voucher.

ColdCottage · 25/02/2021 20:21

Good tip. I always find if you complain in the nicest way possible then politely ask for a discretionary discount or voucher you usually get one. Especially with big companies.

I don’t understand - you have to enter a code online for any student discount.

Donkey's years ago, the little town I lived in was having a new telephone exchange built which would then enable us to use STD dialling.
It was a very slow process, mainly due to the lunchtime drinking habits of the contractors doing the job!
They ran the old and new exchange in parallel for months, but the charge equipment was only connected to the old exchange. If you new the STD code for the person you wanted to call, the call was free and unlimited!

You don't even need to complain, and it doesn't need to be handwritten. I wrote to a company online recently asking advice after I had an issue with one of their products, and they sent me £10 in vouchers. Which is how I know have a surplus of pickles in my house... (They had to be used by the end of December, and there were only three products they could be used on. I happen to love pickles the most, so I bought £10-worth...)

TokyoSushi · 25/02/2021 22:41

@Tinkerbellflowers I tried the Next one today, it works! Thanks!!

Cismyfatarse · 25/02/2021 22:44

Any complaint to M&S about food yields a £5 voucher. I have only ever done it online but it should work in store.

Fourcolourpens · 25/02/2021 22:57

My folks haven’t paid an electricity bill for over 10 years. They realised one day that they hadn’t had a bill for a while so rang their provider who said they no longer supply their electricity, it had been switched. My parents said no, we haven’t asked to change, please send us a bill.

This went backwards and forwards for months, years even. My dad kept a record of every letter and phone call and put aside money to pay for when he assumed they eventually realise. Nothing.

They have made every attempt to find out who is supplying their electricity but no one knows anything about it..!

They have given up trying now, maybe one day they will get a bill for 10 yrs worth of electricity...!

LongIslandIcedT · 25/02/2021 23:34

Four-colour pens they will be able to find out through the local electricity board who their account is with. I had to find this out for a property we manage but the previous tenant hadn't left details of the electricity supplier. There is a search function using the post code on the website of our electricity board, (electricity North West)

LongIslandIcedT · 25/02/2021 23:37

Having said that, someone did recently switch our gas to a new supplier by mistake, I couldn't speak to the new supplier as my name wasn't on the account. Free gas, happy days.

Fourcolourpens · 25/02/2021 23:45

They tried that, it came back with the original supplier who stopped sending them bills in the first place. They forwarded the details but still no bill arrived. That’s the point they gave up!

We stayed in a village in the Peak District years ago and the village phone box would let you make calls without putting any money in it. Two years later we went back there. Nobody had fixed the phone and calls were still free. Have to wonder why BT didn't notice the cash box was always empty.
heatherhoneys · 26/02/2021 02:15

Amazon sent me four boxes of marzipan chocolates all sealed together in cellophane, when I told them I'd had four boxes not one they insisted that I was wrong as they only sold packs of one. That was Xmas sorted for the in laws.

snowblower · 26/02/2021 02:22

Not a loophole, but 1 once found a really nice running jacket. Original price £150 reduced to £90. When I got to the till there was another label attached to the zip for a sports bra @£20. The cashier scanned that & charged me £20 for the jacket.

newnamechangejustforthis · 26/02/2021 02:53

NC just incase other people who remember know, I use to be on a parenting site that didn't allow swearing. They blocked off all the swear words, but I found that by adding ing to a lot of them would allow them through.

They eventually stopped this.

Also honesty is normally the best policy, I am not sure if Tesco's just like being generous on my birthday but for something like the last 3 out of 5 years when I get a shop near my birthday, I get part of someone elses shopping, my best year was the bottle of vodka, lemonade a shit ton of chocolate and a bottle of white wine. Everytime I have phoned up and they have told me to keep it
