Scalp psoriasis

Can you recommend an affordable shampoo and conditioner that treats and keeps scalp psoriasis at bay?

T gel is supposed to be good

TheLaughingGenome · 22/02/2021 21:20

Hi, @Neversleepingever. Have you already tried anything, like Polytar or T-Gel?

And sorry to ask the obvious, but have you contacted your GP about your psoriasis? A pre-paid prescription certificate is usually cheaper overall than paying for expensive products OTC if your GP will prescribe, if you are in England and have to pay for prescriptions.

I've had scalp psoriasis since I was a teenager btw. I'm pretty clear at the moment, but I'm on medication.

Delaunay is good.

Ignore that, I have no idea how autotwat got that from Selsun!

Neversleepingever · 23/02/2021 08:52

Haha thank you!

I got diagnosed last year before covid but wasn't offered any medication, just advised to try zeroveen cream for my face which I buy Fromm boots but my scalp is awful and the last month or so has been worse than ever!

I've been using just a sensitive conditioner but it's not getting any better!

I've not tried t-gel or anything. What conditioner do you recommend with it?

DH has this problem, the only thing that has made a difference is MooGoo shampoo and T Gel shampoo (the dark one, clear version is no good to him). He alternates between the two as if he uses just one for any length of time it's not as effective. He also finds that it can get worse depending on his diet, eg if he has been eating a lot of bread its a lot worse, have you noticed any changes if you cut back on certain foods?

Ostryga · 23/02/2021 12:46

Shampoo and conditioner won’t do anything tbh.

You need Betnovate scalp treatment. Just ask your gp to prescribe it. It’ll clear it up in a week or so.

ColourHex · 23/02/2021 12:57

I've had scalp psoriasis for 20 years, it goes through periods of being really bad and disappearing. I've used all the products mentioned so far (tgel, selsun etc) they all worked for a while and then get less effective over time

One thing that has made a big difference is avoiding shampoo and conditioner that contains sulfates. I've been using sensitive head and shoulders shampoo and ogx conditioner and for the first time in years my flare ups have reduced massively

DottyFlossie · 23/02/2021 13:25

I agree about Betnovate.

I have scalp eczema from time to time and a Betnovate wash is the only thing that clears it. Is there a mediation you can use? Because I think sympathetic shampoos will help you limit outbreaks but won’t actually clear it.

lunar1 · 23/02/2021 13:30

Another one saying betnovate scalp treatment.

There were absolutely no shampoos or other treatments that worked for me. I could tell the difference within 24 hours after using steroids for the first time.

TheLaughingGenome · 23/02/2021 13:34

Top Tip. Don't suddenly stop using steroids like Betnovate, or your skin can flare up badly again. Use regularly until your skin is clear or very much improved, and then cut down gradually, then stop.

BrettAndersonscheekbones · 23/02/2021 13:35

Try the t-gel shampoo that contains coal tar.

CrepuscularCritter · 23/02/2021 13:42

Also here to agree with Betnovate.

OP - I have tried shampoo after shampoo, but none really make it any better. Pre-Covid, I worked my way through all kinds of stuff via TK and the chemist. Some things make it worse for me; for example I can't use any kind of mousse styling product. TGel and other recommendations have done nothing for me, although they might for you. But no products really make it better here. My GP prescribed after seeing a few pics i sent to the practice last year, and it has made a big difference. Wishing you good luck in finding relief from it.

Second this. Liquid betnovate ointment (prescription) is the only thing that touched mine. It wasn’t cost-prohibitive and cleared it all in about a week. I’d have happily paid more for the relief alone!

Phone GP again, first visit they fob you off, second visit they give you the mildest treatment available, third visit they give you something stronger. If still no real improvement by fourth of fifth visit you will be referred to a specialist. GP should be able to prescribe Betnovate, Capasal and Sebco. Synalar might need to be prescribed by consultant. My DC uses these in rotation on scalp though still not 100% clear. Consultant has said there is medication which he could inject which would completely clear up psoriasis but DC is not old enough. Protopic was prescribed for face/body by consultant (a stronger one than the GP can prescribe) but you need to be careful about going out in the sun when using it.
