Isn't now the time for the government to start an OU style online school?

That follows the national curriculum and continues after the pandemic?

Many children are being failed by the school system or have parents who are ill-equipped to home educate them but who need to be home for medical or other reasons (caring work, pregnancy, child birth etc).

I know there are many resources from the BBC and other organisations but they are re all rather piecemeal and this way all children could have the option of home learning to a good standard.

It would also help children who are temporarily displaced from education due to illness that requires hospitalisation or who move frequently for their parent's work or for cultural factors (traveller children etc).

It could also be used by adults who left education early or who have gaps in their schooling.

As other posters have said private companies offer this. Most local
Authorities have a selection of alternative learning for pupils who are out of school, including linking them in with timetables that these companies provide.

I know exactly how much it costs thanks, I’m a teacher.
Home schooling is a choice. Your paid for school place is there waiting for you when you want it.
What your suggesting requires MORE money. School budgets are non- existent as it is.
I’m not actually against home schooling but choosing not to send your child is the privilege of wealthy nations.
Developing countries - they make huge sacrifices to send their children to even the most mediocre of schools. I wish we all acknowledged how lucky we are to have the access to education systems that we do.

Maybe not OU style but while it's such chaos I do think a big shake up is needed in how it's all focused on exams atm.

They tried 8 years ago, it was to be called Wey ecademy but the government refused to allow it

Wey then bought Interhigh and now run it as a private internet high school but do a lot of contract local authority work and also take students with EHCPS

I believe there may be a link to Oak within the Wey group

I can’t praise them highly enough, DD joined them at the point they joined with Interhigh 6 years ago and has thrived there

There are already websites where children enter their work online and get graded as wrong/right. Obviously, you need a human for certain subjects but why couldn't there be teachers who do that? The government pays for this already.

If you want government paid for teachers they are there ready and waiting for your child in schools. They are not going to come to you or give your child 1:1 lessons.
You’re basically asking the government to pay for a private tutor for your child.

Reminds me of the parents who took their DC out of our school and then requested all schemes of work and resources from every subject.
They e-mailed each department asking for guidance.
They also requested use of the resistant materials workshop for woodwork projects.
It was a WTH? moment.

Just to add here. the Government pays for teaching en-masse.
Imagine if every family requested a bespoke service?
