Etsy selling. Will it create a tax drama?

Thinking of starting a wee shop on etsy, probably wont make much but I wondered if when the time came to get any tax money back owed this year, it might interfere?

So as not to drip feed, I did a wee christmas job and it looks like they had me on emergency tax code- But it also looks like the company never took the tax off my pay. So if I phone the tax ppl, it may just create more drama than its worth. I'd have to prove when I last worked (heaven knows what those dates were) so I could show that this was the first job this year.

And if I start an etsy shop that happens to sell a few quid worth too..if I mention that I could see them honing in on that and using it as another excuse to have me jumping through hoops.

But if it only makes a few quid, do I need to tell them anyway? Anyone found any issues with tax and etsy? Doubt I'll make more than 100 quid.

Hope that made sense haha

I'm not 100% certain but Etsy selling May fall under trading income - you get £1000 allowance before you have to tell HMRC.
Also how much did you earn at your Christmas job? You get a personal allowance of £12,500 before you pay tax this year.
The .gov.uk website is very helpful.

Er well I'm no expert but if you sell something on Etsy, surely you're earning money from selling that item therefore you should pay tax, yes. But you do know that you can earn up to £12,500 a year and not pay tax, don't you? You have to fill in a self assessment but you won't pay tax under that amount.

Yeah I'm definately under my yearly allowance, it was just a 10 wk stint in a shop.

It's just with those lot its 'prove it' at every opportunity isn't it xD

I guess I'll probably have to do it at some point anyway. Maybe I'll even find they did take the tax off afterall and I'm due it back. Chance would be a fine thing xD

I'll look into trading income, thanks!

If you're under your allowance, doesn't matter - if you're selling in any way you need to declare even if it's only the odd sale here and there.
