Pls recommend me some gentle radio comedy

I'm looking for gentle radio sitcoms / comedy dramas to lull me to sleep at night. I absolutely love:
In and Out of the Kitchen
Cabin Pressure
About Henry
Conversations from a Long Marriage
All the Charles Paris adaptations with Bill Nighy
To The Manor Born

Slightly darker, but I also enjoy:
The John Moffat Hercule Poirots
Pilgrim
Love in Recovery

I quite enjoyed Clare in the Community but am generally not a fan of audience laughter in my comedy - I prefer to be immersed! I don't mind a podcast (I listen to Fortunately... occasionally) but I really prefer fiction.

Can anyone recommend anything for me to listen to, please? I have Audible as well as BBC Sounds.

I was just going to recommend the pp's "where this service will..." as I was going to try and re-listen to it this week. It's so beautifully written and has the ace Rosie Cavaliero.

yikesanotherbooboo · 22/02/2021 06:40

Me too, 'where this service...'

devildeepbluesea · 22/02/2021 06:46

Thanks for this thread, will take a look at some shows I haven't bothered with so far.

I second Hut33, Souvenir Programme, Double Science, Deep Trouble.

I also enjoy The Break - a few series currently on iPlayer. Philip Jackson, Shobna Gulati, Alison Steadman, Mark Benton and Rasmus Hardike do all the voices.

Also Reluctant Persuaders - comedy show about an advertising agency with Nigel Havers. Really funny.

Think the Unthinkable - repeated now and again on iPlayer but only 1 series available on Audible.

Giles Wemmbley Hogg - spoof travel documentaries, very funny.

@AlbertCampion Ha ha have just deleted all the things I was going to say because they were in your post - ha ha . (In and Out of the Kitchen - brilliant) but to move on

The Mighty Boosh as per @TheNestedIf I think are so much funnier on the Radio than TV

Yes to Ed Reardon's week

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 22/02/2021 07:02

Hut 33
Revolting People
Old Harry's Game
Bleak Expectations

PJsEveryday · 22/02/2021 07:08

I like Tom Wrigglesworth's Hang Ups and allso How does that make you feel?. It features the amazing voice of Roger Allum and is a very gentle comedy that gets better as you get to know the characters.

StellaOlivetti · 22/02/2021 07:12

Plum House is funny, in the cabin pressure mould but perhaps more gentle. I second Mark Steele’s In Town.

PeterPandemic · 22/02/2021 07:30

Believe it! The Richard Wilson autobiography, read by him. Not actually real, which I didn't realise when I first put it on Grin

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 22/02/2021 07:34

@Ginspiration, I'm afraid I don't know if Double Acts is available anywhere at the moment. I heard them all around the time they went out. Audible? I don't have a sub there. There was a very good amateur drama version of Penguin Diplomacy available on YouTube a few months ago but I don't think it's there now. They did warn it would be limited availability, presumably for rights reasons.

Cherrypi · 22/02/2021 07:48

Quiz nite! On BBC sounds. Four one off comedy dramas set at quizzes with Hugh Dennis.

Significantown · 22/02/2021 08:34

Bbc Sounds The Men From the Ministry

Life on Egg

Splann · 22/02/2021 08:40

A couple of gently funny podcasts you might like are Fortunately (Jane Garvey and Fi Glover from woman’s hour) and Older and Wider (Jenny Eclair).

TheNestedIf · 22/02/2021 09:03

I'd forgotten about "Believe It!" that @PeterPandemic mentioned. I think I only heard the episode with David Tennant and Peter Capaldi, but that was hilarious.

QueenArseClangers · 22/02/2021 09:25

The Lord Peter Wimsey books are ace. Also Stella Gibbons audiobooks (Cold Comfort Farm is my favourite).
Count Arthur Strong is gently funny too.

MrsBodger · 22/02/2021 09:43

Incredible Women with Rebecca Front and her brother Jeremy - R4 series, I think I just listened to series 8.
How Does That Make You Feel? Therapist Frances Tomelty talking to fabulously ghastly patients played by Roger Allam and Tim Mcinerney amongst others - truly wonderful.

AlbertCampion · 22/02/2021 09:46

Oooh Wimsey is a good shout and Cold Comfort Farm is one one of my favourite books ever. I was really, really put off Count Arthur Strong by my husband showing me an episode of the TV series, which I really couldn't get into. He has said the radio series is v different though, and I do love Rory Kinnear, so I should give it a go!

Roger Allam is one of my favourite actors - could listen to his voice all day. Many happy memories of Sarah and Duck when DS was smaller.

These suggestions are so fantastic - thank you! I now have lots of subscriptions on BBC Sounds and a sizeable Audible Wish List!

@AlbertCampion I was coming on to post something very similar so thank you. Have never really done podcasts before but will shortly ha e a much longer journey to work. Where can I listen to cabin pressure please

AlbertCampion · 22/02/2021 09:55

@BasiliskStare I think In and Out of the Kitchen may be my favourite radio comedy of all time. It is my go-to when I'm feeling down. I've had to stop myself from listening for a bit because I'm worried I'm going to spoil it! I think I share too many traits with Damien Trench. 😳😂

This is an excellent thread, I adore radio 4

BasiliskStare · 22/02/2021 10:10

Oh well whilst we are here yes yes Lord Peter Wimsey & may I recommend ( probably R 4 extra or downloads ) Paul Temple and his wife Steve - quite retro but brilliant IMHO This does not make it looks as it sounds www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03pc96p/episodes/guide

Ha ha @AlbertCampion - yup I agree re In and out of the kitchen - but then I will pretty much listen to anything with Miles Jupp. If you are in a certain mood - do Give Paul Temple a go - it is amusing

All best x

AlbertCampion · 22/02/2021 10:10

@gassylady Cabin Pressure comes up on the BBC occasionally and is also available on Audible, I think. It is v, v good!

Barmbraic · 22/02/2021 10:15

I got Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister on audible. They are absolutely hilarious and scarily current.

Badabingbadabum · 22/02/2021 10:19

Beta Female, I think finished a week ago, was really good. I do hope the commission another series.

That one with the therapist and the clients she saw in a week. I think it was the 15 minute one after Womens Hour. Can't remember the name.

Also The Diary of Samuel Pepys. I imagine its on Sounds, I haven't heard it for a few years but every episode had a funny part and it was really great to just switch off and listen to.

Badabingbadabum · 22/02/2021 10:22

43MrsBodger How Does That Make You Feel, that's the one! I love Roger Allum's character and his tales of his son!

reprehensibleme · 22/02/2021 10:35
