To ask if you're a metal detector(ist)? If you are, what have you found?

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 21/02/2021 18:17

YES it's not an AIBU, but you try posting in the graveyard that is Chat these days. Everyone's spoiling for a fight, so why not argue about metal detecting to take our minds off things.

My plan is - if everything's still shite when the weather starts getting better, I'm going to buy a detector and take DS out hunting for ring pulls gold. I see detectorists bimbling around occasionally, but I'm never brave enough to ask them what they've found because I know they must get it a lot.

Is it fun? Do you know anyone who's found anything good?

Facebook groups I can recommend are:

Responsible Metal Detecting Uk (very friendly group especially for beginners. Lots of advice available, nothing is a silly question! Will also help to navigate the rules of detecting!)

Digging Women (new group set up recently, hoping to arrange post lockdown get togethers)

Imapotato · 22/02/2021 09:18

My friend is quite into it. She mostly finds a load of old rubbish, but once she found 2 gold 17th century coins. They’re beautiful!

Botanica · 22/02/2021 09:24

My FIL Zia a keen detectorist and it's genuinely fascinating to see his finds. I've learnt a lot about history through researching the reigns of the kings and queens who's coins he has found, including some incredible Roman and earlier. There's also so much social history you tap into to - lost love lockers and rings, brooches, bells from hawks from the times we used to hunt, metal work from cart horse harnesses from when they ploughed our fields. I'd love to it but usually just live vicariously through his adventures.

Top tip for finding money - try the fields where they used to hold the fun fairs, public events and carnivals :)

Our lovely elderly neighbour left two metal detectors and a pointer and his little spades to our kids in his will. He found all sorts of interesting things and would let them have a go in his garden, they didn't realise that he was burying coins for them to find.

Unfortunately, we don't know how to use the detectors, we've gone a few times down at the beach and they just beep at any old thing, including stones - weird.

I keep meaning to find a club to see if someone can show us how to adjust the settings. The kids love a bit of history and it's outside hobby which is good!

My DH is a MD nerd. Designs, builds, sells (and, in my opinion,) hoards metal detectors. I went once, found a second century AD Roman brooch. I said "I win" and stopped. Thus I was able to pursue my hobby of sitting in the car reading with a flask of hot coffee while he continued with his dirt hoovering. If you want a good second hand one dm me and I'll let you know what we're getting rid of. Or if you have your eye on a particular model I can ask him for pros and cons. Please always get specific permission from land owner, fill in your holes, and get to know your county museum's archaeological finds officer.

From this moment on I shall always refer to myself as a 'dirt hooverer' 😂🤣
squashyhat · 22/02/2021 09:47

Please be aware that if you find anything that looks really old it's of much more historical value if it's left in situ rather than dug up, at least until an archaeologist can take a look at it and the context in which it has been found.

whojamaflip · 22/02/2021 10:02

I got a Simplex for Christmas so fulfilling a childhood dream! So far I've only been across our own farm but have found some interesting stuff - namely a silver half crown and a mediaeval cloth seal (and loads of musket balls!) Our farm has been covered by mds for years but there's still things to find (including loads of iron scrap Grin) I go out with a friend who has been doing it for years and he keeps me right re what needs declaring etc.

Be warned it's addictive and very easy to lose hours out in the field!

mummyplusbump · 22/02/2021 10:04

@Womblesmurf Yes I have Lara’s book and there is another good book that’s just come out too that some of my friends have their finds featured in.

I have found some nice things on the Thames, that I have had recorded. I have a Bellarmine neck, lots of nice clay pipes with faces on, bits of pottery, dolls heads etc. The Mudlarking community on Instagram is really nice, much larger than what is on Facebook.

I have a Deus with the white HF coil, not tried the Nox but have heard great things about it!

mummyplusbump · 22/02/2021 10:08

@Womblesmurf. I couldn’t find “detecting women” but there is also one called sassy searchers that I am in.

mummyplusbump · 22/02/2021 10:10

@Womblesmurf ah I was spelling it wrong “digging women” I’ve requested to join

Nonamesavail · 22/02/2021 10:12

We live where it was filmed. We've been put a few times. Lots of random metal bits, nothing amazing but it gets us outside!

Never done any dirt hoovering myself, but you've had excellent advice from people who really know their stuff about the legal aspects OP! My most treasured possession is a 16th century ring that a detector found in a field a few miles away. It's not worth much at all, but it just amazes me to think I'm wearing something that's passed from hand to hand for 500 years Smile

A slightly cheaper form of detecting is to go graffiti hunting in old buildings. You literally need nothing more than a £4 LED torch Grin

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 22/02/2021 21:48

Oh wow!

I am loving all the stories of things people have found, by the way. I really did think it would be mostly tin cans and nails!

@JesusInTheCabbageVan. I wouldn’t have any of those machines personally.

I have copied below for you the pinned post from one of the metal detecting groups on FB (Metal Detecting UK) which answers the “what detector should I buy” question very well.

Here you go.....hope this is helpful.

If it was me I would look for a second hand Garrett 250 but watch out for fakes/copies.

Smile

MDUK announcement

Further to the request for a pinned post for people new to the hobby, here is something I composed a while ago.

We welcome in many new members every day here that are new to detecting, wanting to go out there and find treasure.

Every day, and sometimes many times a day we get asked, ''whats the best detector for a new starter in the hobby?''

We as seasoned detectorists would like to pass on some advice.

  1. Maplin detector, throw it in the bin.

2.Tandy detector, throw it in the bin.

  1. Ebay China detector, Throw it in the bin.
  1. Amazon, best detector in the world, Throw it in the bin!.

These under £100 detectors will find a pound coin on the surface in your back garden, but when you go to the beach, or out on a rally to the countryside, you will find.... not very much at all and be feeling very frustrated with your new chosen hobby.

Many a seasoned detectorist, when asked what is the best newby machine to start with, will say the Ace250 That is a good machine, very resellable when you want to upgrade, we at MDUK are also promoting the new starter machine on the market, the GMUK+1 detector from Golden Mask, Carl at spinadiscmetaldetectors.com supplies these.

Further to this advice, there is a new kid on the block, the Nokta Simplex has been released, The initial feedback is, it is punching well above its weight in the detector market, spinadiscmetaldetectors.com/collections/nokta-makro-simplex for £279.00 for the basic model, or £369.00 with wireless headphones, its a beast of a detector for people to start with. All the main suppliers have them and the price has just been reduced in some shops.

Keep your eye out for the new kid on the circuit, the new Garrett Apex is for sale now. www.lpmetaldetecting.com/collections/garrett/products/garrett-apex

For those asking the same old question, 'what's the best detector for a beginner, have a look here www.lpmetaldetecting.com/collections/beginners

For direct supplier chat, speak to Peter Turrell at Leisure Promotions, tell him where you want to detect, how often, how much you want to spend and he won't give you duff advice to make you part with your money, he will give you good honest advice on the detector you need and what will work for you.

Regtons will also give you a great service, They too are detectorists that do detecting, the whole team are great and want you to find stuff, so give you the best advice they can offer.

Next advice for a beginner, think of land like this.... Every piece of land in the country has an owner, and you need to seek permission from them before you can detect, Beaches are different, permits are no longer required, but some beaches may be privately owned or some may be SSSI and detecting is forbidden.

When seeking permission from a landowner, having public liability insurance is a huge plus on your side. £10.00 a year and your covered. www.ncmd.co.uk/insurance/

Can I ask all detectorists to familiarise themselves with this finds.org.uk/treasure So you know when you find something wonderful, you have certain responsibilities that you need to follow.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 23/02/2021 20:42

Thank you so much, I will have a look at these. I've just emailed asking about the ones mentioned upthread so will see if MenaiMna's DH can advise further as well. It's all a bit of a minefield 😬 (hopefully not literally...)
