If you eat your crusts your hair will grow curly!....... and other nonsense

LIGHTHEARTED! Smile

Was anyone else ever told this, or any other 'nontruths' just to get you to do something you didn't want to do?

I hated the crusts off the bread. My mum used to buy them 'well done', aka burnt, so I refused to eat them.

Oddly enough, now in my 60's and post menopause, my hair now IS curly. Who knew!

My hair turned curly around 15, I always ate my crusts - so clearly it's true... Grin

Gingernaut · 21/02/2021 10:33

Opposite to this.

Mums would point at me (redhead) and tell their kids that if they didn't do such and such (behave, eat veg, stop mithering their siblings), they'd grow up with my hair.

Thanks. Hmm

That if the wind changes while you are making a face, you'll have that face forever.

(Looks in mirror and wonders if there might be truth in that one)

my parents told me it would make my hair straight!

pinkearedcow · 21/02/2021 10:35

Ginger that's awful. Red hair is beautiful.

Onlinedilema · 21/02/2021 10:37

Yes my grandma used to say that to me this ensuring that I never ate my crusts as I did not want curly hair!

Oh Nooooooo! Grin

My hair was dead straight and I would spend agonising hours with hair curlers pinned to my scalp in a vain hope the curl would stay - but nope, my hair was too heavy.

Yes, I had both it will make your hair curly, and it will put hairs on your chest... why they thought the latter was encouraging I don’t know.

I was embarrassingly advanced in years before I thought about it and realised that there’s no extra goodness in bread crusts 😂

LittleRa · 21/02/2021 10:44

My grandma used to tell me if I picked my nose it would turn into a pig’s snout! 🐽

Tallybeebloom · 21/02/2021 10:44

We got told the crusts one. Also got told-

If you swallow bubble gum a bubble gum tree will grow in your stomach

If you try to unscrew your belly button your bum will fall off

eddiemairswife · 21/02/2021 10:45

I already had curly/wavy hair so it didn't apply, however I liked crusts with extra butter on. Still do. The wind changing was often mentioned in Enid Blyton's short stories.

LApprentiSorcier · 21/02/2021 10:46

I have always had curly hair and was still told this as a child. At that age I longed for straight hair so if anything, it was a disincentive to eat my crusts!

Justmuddlingalong · 21/02/2021 10:47

If you poke about in your belly button, your bum will fall off.

Onlinedilema · 21/02/2021 10:49

Also never cross on the stairs. I still avoid doing this!

eddiemairswife · 21/02/2021 10:52

Don't put new shoes on the table. Never bring May blossom into the house.

Elieza · 21/02/2021 11:21

If you eat sugar you’ll get worms in your tummy.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 21/02/2021 11:24

One grandmother told me I'd get curls if I ate my crusts. The other grandmother told me I'd have strong teeth if I ate my crusts. By the time I was six, I refused to eat crusts as I was convinced I'd get curly teeth Blush

I now have curly hair and bad (but straight) teeth so take your pick Grin

When I was pg with DCs, my mum was deadly serious that I mustn't raise my arms high or reach up to get something from a high shelf.

She was adamant that if I did this, the cord would wrap around the baby's neck. She's nuts. Grin

Too much tv will turn your eyes square

HappyTimeTunnelDinosaur · 21/02/2021 11:46

If you don't clean your ears properly you'll grow potatoes in them.

Curlygirl06 · 21/02/2021 12:06

I was told if you unscrewed your belly button your legs would fall off. I never quite believed it but didn't want to try in case it was true!
Yes to the crusts and curly hair. (I've got curly hair, but my sister hasn't, go figure!)
Never cross on the stairs- check.
Don't pick your nose, your eye will fall out.
Wind changing and your face- check.
New shoes on the table- check.
Do parents have a leaflet given to them so that they can tell the kids the same things? Lol.

SittinOnTheDockOfTheBay · 21/02/2021 12:15

I hated the crusts off the bread. My mum used to buy them 'well done', aka burnt, so I refused to eat them.

Me too. I refused to eat them on the grounds that I already had curly hair and wanted straight hair, not even curlier hair. My sister has straight hair and she refused to eat them because I had curly hair and didn't like my curly hair.

So that one backfired nicely.

OhToBeASeahorse · 21/02/2021 12:17

My mum always chastised me for doing anything that meant my arms were above my head whilst pregnant.

Apparently it wraps the cord around the baby's neck Hmm
