What does conscious sedation feel like?

I'm going in for a colonoscopy next week and just wondered what the sedation was like. Many thanks.

I think everyone reacts completely differently so I don’t want to freak you out... but as you asked... I found it horrific and react like a wild animal...

Honestly though it was years ago and I am fine now! It was for a tooth extraction and the medical staff near my face didn’t help I don’t think. And genuinely I know people who have been fine and have no memory of it.

Those that have described it to me say it's like you have some awareness of what's going on at the time but not total normal awareness but later they don't remember very much, if any of it at all.

Hard to describe... hope it goes ok for you.

Amazing. I had a tooth out with it and it was great.

EternalOptimist7 · 21/02/2021 10:27

I had some for an endoscopy & it was kind of like dreaming.

Gilead · 21/02/2021 10:27

I have no problem at all with it, I have regular colonoscopies due to having UC.
Having it next week to sort cataract and had it eight weeks ago for the other cataract. Usually don’t remember a great deal.

MadMadMad · 21/02/2021 10:28

I had it for a colonoscopy and it was fine - I didn't really feel sedated but I was very relaxed throughout so I'm sure it was having an effect.

kindlekeeper · 21/02/2021 10:28

I found it fine. Could chat and see what they were doing but without feeling afraid or anxious. I’ve had it several times for colonoscopies. The whole procedure isn’t nearly as bad as anticipated.

Gilead · 21/02/2021 10:28

PS. There are no nerve endings in your bowel/colon so no pain caused.

VioletCharlotte · 21/02/2021 10:31

I was sedated to have a wisdom tooth removed. It was fine, I don't remember anything about it. My Mum says I was a bit confused for a little while afterwards, but nothing to worry about.

IAmcuriousyellow · 21/02/2021 10:32

Thanks for posting this Blubell, I’m having my first cataract done soon and have been wondering this. Interested that Gilead has has an eye fixed! Good luck with the colonoscopy, reassuring to hear that there are no nerve endings in there so you should sail through.

Blubell281 · 21/02/2021 10:32

Thanks everyone, I've had 2 sigmoidoscopies and an endoscopy about 20 years ago, no sedation. It was fine but I'm not in the mood for being brave anymore so if there's an easier way of doing things then I'm all for it.

I have had conscious sedation for a colonoscopy. It was fine- I felt very woozy like being half asleep, but I didn’t feel any pain at all.

breatheslowandtrust · 21/02/2021 10:37

DH had midazolam (which I assume is CS?) for a repeat gastroscopy. The first time he didn't have it and found it very distressing, but with the CA it knocked him out and he couldn't remember a thing.

Mabelface · 21/02/2021 10:41

It was wonderful, was barely aware for my colonoscopy, and didn't remember a thing about my gastrostopy.

WeeDangerousSpike · 21/02/2021 10:45

I've had it for a colonoscopy, I'd describe it as that feeling when you're drunk and the room won't stay still and you're quite out of it, but without any unpleasant sick feeling or anything. It doesn't feel bad, you just feel not really in touch with reality.

LongPauseNoAnswer · 21/02/2021 10:48

I had it for a colonoscopy too. I just remember the nurse patting my hand and saying not to be worried, the doctor is very generous with the meds. And was he, that’s the last thing I remember before awareness returned. It was weird because I wasn’t asleep, I “came around” whist sitting in a chair with tea and biscuits chatting with DH. You’ll be fine OP.

ssd · 21/02/2021 10:49

Its bloody great

WeeDangerousSpike · 21/02/2021 10:50

Also, I'm very envious of posters on threads like this that say they didn't remember a thing after sedation. I've been sedated many times, and most definitely remember everything, every time, there's different levels of sedation apparently, from just a light calming down dose, to completely out of it. I've no idea how they decide what level to give you, seems a bit of a lottery!

NOTANUM · 21/02/2021 10:52

I had it for a colonoscopy. While I remembered very little, the doctors said I became very distressed and started fighting them off Shock They almost couldn't carry on.
I would have it again though as I was oblivious if a bit embarrassed.

NOTANUM · 21/02/2021 10:53

I guess they told me in case I remembered it later and wasn't sure what went on.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 21/02/2021 10:53

@ssd

Its bloody great
Yep

Turns out i love being sedated...which is a worry

I don’t remember a single thing,

MuchTooTired · 21/02/2021 10:55

I’ve had it a couple of times, I felt tipsy and then waking up and the procedures were done.

It’s great!

AmySosa · 21/02/2021 10:56

Had one that had zero effect, for an endoscopy. It was not pleasant.

They obvs upped the dose when I went in for the second one as it was like having a general, had the dose... and then I woke up, nothing in between, although I was apparently awake and able to move when asked. Weirdest thing ever.
