Just turned 40 and suddenly eating eggs makes me nauseous - is this a thing?

Is it just me? I’ve noticed over the past six months or so that I can’t eat eggs anymore. I can eat mayonnaise and cakes (thank god) but fried, scrambled, poached eggs all make me feel sick as I’m eating them.

I really like eggs. What could be causing this?

I'm 44 but also started struggling with eggs in the last 6 months or so. Used to love them and eat them loads

WannaCapybara · 21/02/2021 10:33

Me!

Now most things with egg in make my throat really itchy and/or give me the shits.

Quiche is off the menu as of yesterday...

@Potter10

I can't ever since someone pointed out the umbilical cord a few years back. Now whenever I crack an egg open I retch!
🤣 It is likely to be the chalazae which is a white stringy bit of the egg that anchors the yolk into the centre of the egg. More noticeable in some eggs that others and just part of the structure of the egg like the yolk, white and shell is.

I get this from time to time, most memorably eating scrambled eggs then violently throwing up ten minutes later. It's really weird!!!

Alicenwonderland · 21/02/2021 10:36

Wow!! I have this too! I developed a sudden intolerance in my late 20s. I can eat them in things but not alone or things that are too eggy! Reason I'm interested in these responses as I'm now 43 and I've been ill for quite a while. I have a terrible rash and feel exhausted all the time. I had my bloods done and I'm B12 deficient and also borderline for coeliac disease! I wonder if the being able to process eggs is part of it?

Chocsmyfav · 21/02/2021 10:47

I had this with bananas. Used to love them. Since I had my son ten years ago, they give me the gag

Savoury · 21/02/2021 10:48

Same here. I can eat well cooked eggs like hard boiled eggs, egg protein, mayonnaise etc. but cannot eat slightly undercooked eggs such as runny eggs or fresh mousses.

It's a pain as I like eggs but at least I can still eat them!

romany4 · 21/02/2021 10:53

I'd say it's the beginnings of peri -menopause.
Always eaten eggs and lived them. Got to 40. Had to stop eating them as they made me feel queasy and face me stomach gripes every time I ate them.
Now 49. Have slowly had to eliminate a LOT of food from my diet due to menopause

Piinkjuice · 21/02/2021 10:55

I get diarrhoea, nausea and a headache when I eat an omelette, even if it’s plain. I am fine with eggs just fried or in a cake. Coffee gives me a headache too and coke. It’s so strange because I actually love omelette. I get diarrhoea when I eat a big mac every single time, but any other item from McDonalds is fine. I eat my big mac without sauce too so it’s only a normal burger, bun, lettuce etc.

This is why I hated keto.

Weirdly it's the egg white that makes me feel like I'm unable to swallow it.

Poolbridge · 21/02/2021 11:07

At 40 and after the birth of my second child, I can’t eat eggs on their own, ie, there needs to be toast or another accompaniment with them, and my eggs have to be fully cooked now. Otherwise I dry retch and gag.
I have no explanation for this change as I used to be able to eat runny eggs and eggs on their own before 40 and having children

31RooCambon · 21/02/2021 11:07

I just googled that and apparently that's normal. Funny. I would have thought that the egg yolk had more in it to react to but clearly not.

When I was trying to do keto (but that is virtually impossible if you vered towards a veg diet and also dislike eggs!) I used to make an omelette with all of the egg yolks and chuck out most of the egg white

FoxandFeathers · 21/02/2021 11:11

This happened to me. Had eggs nearly every day, nausea started happening, then was sick once. Left them a while and have them less often now, no problems. I am 46.

Whitney168 · 21/02/2021 11:13

I'm like this with boiled eggs (often enough that I don't bother trying any more) and with occasionally poached ones. Feel like I can't swallow them, they're fighting to come back. Very odd.

Don't have any issues at all with omelettes, scrambled, fried.

FamilyOfAliens · 21/02/2021 11:19

As pp have said, there is no umbilical cord in an egg.

But it’s funny when people object to finding parts of an egg in their egg.

Captainrachy · 21/02/2021 11:26

36 and developed an intolerance over the last year or so. Nausea, cramps, dizziness, awful brain fog. Made me feel hungover. I am so glad you started this thread and I am not alone. I have completely cut eggs out now and it has changed my life. I no longer spend weekends lying on the sofa with no energy, feeling crap.

1starwars2 · 21/02/2021 11:41

Well, eggs are a bit gross if you actually think about what you're eating.
They also have a very distinctive smell and taste so I can see why that might happen.

RinderTinderNotRinderGrinder · 21/02/2021 13:24

I think we need a study into why this happens. Any scientists about? For something seemingly so common it’s strange we don’t have any reasons for it.

Just the title of this thread made me gag just thinking about eggs 🤢 I used to love a poached egg on toast, now I can't stand the smell or taste of them. I've also completely gone off tea and have become quite the coffee connoisseur, when I never used to drink the stuff. I'm 35 btw
