Little moons - has anyone else tried the hype?

The ice cream mochi, sold out for weeks in our local Tesco. My daughter today begged me to try and find some. An eye watering £4.50 for 6. ..not going to lie they are pretty damn yummy.

Anyone else got their kids asking for these?

Haven't tried and haven't looked to see if I can get them yet but I feel they are EVERYWHERE! Gold dust!

Inastatus · 20/02/2021 23:02

My DD told me about them and I’ve tried several times to get them but always sold out!

Emmelina · 20/02/2021 23:10

Mochi has been around for ages, it’s amazing. We always get some for dessert when we go to Yo! There is ice cream variant (freezer) and a chilled variant. If your local Sainsbury’s has a sushi gourmet counter they often have the chilled in there.
Alternatively you can make some

It’s absolutely delicious and we probably make it every couple of months or so. But be warned it’s made with sweet rice flour and incredibly messy! Much worse than oobleck to clean up! There’s a knack to getting the little balls filled and sealed closed without ending up with a handful of goo :)

mammmamia · 20/02/2021 23:12

I was buying ice cream in Tesco today and had at least 5 people BARGE past me to get to these. Now I know what all the fuss was about. Thanks MN!

DartmoorChef · 20/02/2021 23:16

I need to try these. They sound lovely.

frazzledasarock · 20/02/2021 23:46

Love mochi, I like some flavours more than others. I’ve tried ice cream mochi at wagamamas and liked that too.

Altho DC informed me the ice cream variation was not authentic. Still liked it.

yuyubooboo · 21/02/2021 00:08

@Emmelina that sounds amazing. I can't believe I've never thought of trying to make my own. If you don't mind me asking where do you buy sweet rice flour from? I just checked online and it was unavailable in Tesco and Amazon

Jackie2022 · 21/02/2021 00:12

I randomly tried them for the first time a few months ago. Thought the first one was amazing, but got bored by the end of the box

They have SO many amazing flavours like Strawberries and cream etc which sound delicious - I wanted to try the others but can only find the mango or coconut variants in store & have given up. Just gonna wait for Selfridges food hall to reopen!

If you have an Asian supermarket close, they will sell it :)

WorryingMum2029 · 21/02/2021 00:16

They’re awful!!!! Picked them up in Asda once and couldn’t then believe the hype I was seeing on SM. Horrible things.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 21/02/2021 00:27

Mochi is my favourite thing ever. These are the closest I can get to a fresh Strawberry Daifuku when the country is shut down.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 21/02/2021 10:00

Amazing to see the mixed reviews.

I might make my own but I'm going to master gelato first....

Tried them, very "meh" not worth the price or the hype. It's like a saggy ball sack with ice cream inside

MustardMitt · 21/02/2021 13:39

It’s funny isn’t it how tastes are so different across the world?

We have an Asian supermarket local to us, I buy a lot of noodles and condiments etc, and we have tried the steamed buns quite a few times. I just dislike the texture so much, and red bean paste is horrible. But it’s so loved elsewhere! I also really dislike mochi for the same textural reasons.

My youngest son however likes everything he’s ever tried. Older ones not so much Grin

Dragonflystars · 31/05/2021 23:10

I have had these "little Moons", delicious but utterly disaster when my son had one... (he has a tree nut allergy) he had a reaction , just a mini one because he tried a little bit. I feel terrible, he's all fine now
But this is a warning to all of the other mums!

notapizzaeater · 31/05/2021 23:17

I know it's an old thread but Aldi have brought their own variant out.

Borisjohnsonshairbrush · 07/06/2021 10:37

Oh I have seen! Not tried them yet

@JillyWillyPops

My 10 year old got some from Asda the other day. He description was... 'mum they're like saggy ball skin' 🤢🤮🤢
I agree with him! When I tried them after my younger sister had been going on about them I said to my partner it’s how I imagine biting into a ball sack would be 🤮🤮 the ice cream in the middle was lovely but the outside was the weirdest texture!
proopher · 07/06/2021 10:44

I really hate them, I think they're vile. I had them years ago and couldn't believe the recent hype when it started up!

GlutenFreeGingerCake · 07/06/2021 10:57

I like them and I am not even that keen on normal mochi cakes. Dd is very into all things Japanese and Korean so she wanted to try it and I thought she would like it but I think I like it more than her as she has quite sensitive teeth and doesn't like biting into icecream.

DancesWithDaffodils · 07/06/2021 10:59

They are vile.
And expensive. Bought one box because of the hype, and will not be buying them again.
