Walking Camino trail, which Route?

Tiggles · 20/02/2021 17:02

Planning on walking the Camino trail (well about 160miles of it) with my 12 and 14 year old. And yes probably won't be until next year.
Anyone done it? Wondering whether to do the northern Route or the France Route. Will be watching videos and reading books on both but personal experience always a plus.
Any helpful hints? Places you enjoyed staying (or would avoid) etc?

Following as one of my favourite books is on this. It’s fictional but I would love to do it one day.
No advise though!

Have you looked at the Porto to Santiago Camino too?

You can take a coastal route which is a bit easier (although there is a more hilly inland route as well) and there are bag services that take your luggage on for you.

I’ve walked the northern route - it is stunning, much much less busy and developed than the Camino Frances - but when I did it about 5 years ago, that also meant there was much less infrastructure which might be difficult with two children. It was a case of eating the food there was, when it was available, and there are some long days of walking without much opportunity to stop. On the other hand, I only once had difficulty getting into a hostel for the night, whereas on the Camino Frances I believe people need to do a lot of pre-booking.
It was stunning, but it was genuinely tough. The north of Spain has very variable weather, the hostels are sometimes noisy and difficulty to sleep in, and you spend a lot of time very tired with your feet hurting!
You need to be prepared to take public transport for the day before the kids or you are struggling, I would say.
HTH!

I walked the French route

I guess it depends how long you have to do it !
The last 100 km from Sarria to Santiago are busy but there are plenty of hostels and places to stay and lots of people to meet , plus the walking is a bit easier !

I would say for your first time and with kids the Frances would be a good choice, there's plenty of infrastructure and it's busy enough to feel really safe the whole way along. The Norte is also a bit more difficult in terms of terrain (more ascent and descent whereas the Frances is pretty flat, discounting the first day over the Pyrenees!) And the Norte also has fewer albergues, although the closer you get to Santiago the more places there are to stay, so it might not be a problem if you're only doing the last 160 miles.
Hope you have a fabulous time when you get there, and watch out - you might catch the bug and spend every week off you ever have on pilgrimage for the rest of your life - I certainly did!
¡Buen Camino! ¡Ultreya!

Thanks all
Lots to think about.
We live in Wales so used to mountain walking but equally want it to be enjoyable not a chore.

How long do you want to be away for? I have done the Camino ingles, which you can do in five days (so away for a week) and the Camino finisterre which is a similar amount of time. Finisterre route is stunning - we did it backwards (I.e. left from Santiago). Ingles is quieter and an excellent way to start your Camino adventures if you want the satisfaction of completing an entire route...

I would so love to do this, with my children
What I would struggle with is my daughter’s incessant talk!
