ASC? A quiet, continuous vibration source, not necessarily a vibrator?

Any sensory processing/ASC folks or others above to help me find a device that makes a continuous low level, quiet vibration?

I've purchased a few pillows and "snakes" specifically for helping with sensory overload, but they are ridiculously loud and strong. I want one for sleeping and possibly to take on public transport. I don't mind if it's actually a vibrator, but whenever I click on one on amazon that says it's quiet it'll have customer comments saying it's loud. Also I want it to stay on unless I turn it off. Does this product exist?

Electric toothbrush?

tatyr · 20/02/2021 17:41

Hexbug nano? Not sure how long the batteries would last but they are replaceable. Or I have seen vibrating teethers that might do?

dudsville · 20/02/2021 17:53

I will look at the teether, if it's gentle enough for babies that's probably the level I'm looking for! I will Google the nano thing. I think the toothbrush would have to be pretty expensive before it was quiet enough!

None of these have worked out so far. And thanks, Sink, unfortunately I've just returned the cow skin looking version odd that for being loud and hard to activate. You could actually hear mine from across the house.

I just need a low level vibration with an on/off switch, but it's so hard to find. Ideally it would be mains operated.

I presume you've searched through most of the sensory 'toys' and cushions on the market to be fair. If you don't mind something like a vibrator, would it be possible to sound insulate it, maybe rolled inside a couple of thick woolly socks to muffle the noise?

dudsville · 21/02/2021 13:14

Thanks Tatyr, I have tried a lot of the items targeted at this audience. I have also tried wrapping them up to muffle them. It surprises me how loud everything ie, and most vibrate to a really strong degree. I'm surprised there isn't a market for this lower level stuff that could be more portable and used more discreetly when outside.

I dipped into the sex section of mumsnet to look for threads on vibrators. Those threads are so far off topic for my purpose so I'm back to searching the general internet for quiet vibrators. It's an eye opening journey!

What about this?

Cahot Sleep Aid Machine for Adults Insomnia, Rechargeable Sleeping Machine with Micro-Current for Fast Asleep… https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08G4YCJHF/ref=cmswwrcppapifabcc_MNSAYXVNDHTQ338VF90R

Maybe vibrator wise you could look at ones that are built into pants. They're designed to be discreet and often have a remote control.

dudsville · 21/02/2021 15:14

Ladytruck, that tens idea is really interesting, thank you! I just read a research article about using tens machines for insomnia, I might try this!

I was going to say tens machine too

GoodQueenAlysanne · 21/02/2021 15:20

For when you're at home, a cat, to sit on you and purr? Seriously though, what about listening to something like this, through headphones at low level?

Or do you want to be able to feel it too?

GoodQueenAlysanne · 21/02/2021 15:21

Or record something that you like the sound of yourself, but lower the volume when listening, if it's loud irl?

TheLaughingGenome · 21/02/2021 15:26

A family member uses fans. A handheld fan for travelling that he holds to his face, and an upright fan for his room, right next to his head.

PolterGoose · 21/02/2021 15:32

I use fans at home. For public transport I use noise cancelling headphones, some will work without music and you get a very low buzz along with the noise cancelling which is quite soothing.

dudsville · 21/02/2021 15:34

Thanks everyone, I need to be able to feel it - and the sound, even a supposedly soothing one, can really grate. I've now purchased a tens machine. I'm really excited and hopeful!!!

How do you find fans? I have my fan on my bedside table and find if any part of the bed is touching it even slightly it gentle vibrates. It drives me mad but might work for you?

LadyTruck · 25/02/2021 03:13

Yay! I'm really really pleased it works for you
