Worried about holidays abroad

Sorry to start a negative thread but I’m genuinely worried about this. I know the projections state that we should all be hopefully vaccinated in the uk by autumn/winter but surely it’s going to take a lot longer for the world to be vaccinated, which is what essentially needs to happen before we can travel safely again.

What are peoples thoughts about future holidays? Do you think travelling abroad will become a pastime of the ‘rich’ again like in the 60s and 70s or do you think the holiday companies will need to make holidaying more affordable to entice people to spend money?

I’m also worried that the government (in light of our economy plummeting) will try to keep holidays abroad illegal for as long as possible to encourage people to holiday in this country to spend money/improve the uk economy.

Ah, the 3k didn't include my partner's share of the shared trios, about 4.5k total I guess

@Compey

Surely there are more important things than holidays abroad? It's no big deal. If you so desperately need a holiday then you can substitute a holiday in the UK.
It is a big deal. Some of us go away to have a nice view and feel the heat first thing on a morning not scroll along Scarborough beach in the wind and rain. It’s not the same! Things like Centre parcs cost a fortune too.

I’m a Covid pessimist. No plans whatsoever to travel overseas this year. Would be genuinely surprised though if there are any restrictions next summer.

ie 2022

@LadyCatStark

I’ll be beyond furious if some people are heading off abroad with a vaccine passports while the rest of us sit and twiddle our thumbs wheels we wait for a vaccination! Especially as it’s those who we locked down to save that’ll be the ones that are able to head off!
How sad. I've nothing booked and haven't yet been refunded my march trip which was replaced with back to back shifts. I work in social care (working right now in fact, 6th 11h waking night in a row, one more, then two nights off and back in). I've averaged over 60 hours a week since the first lockdown. And you are going to be furious if I can go on holiday because of my Pfizer jab? You would deny me that just because you aren't (potentially) safe to travel? Not that I'm intendingg to be going anywhere soon.

I’ve never been abroad, nor have my teen DC.

Last year DS2 was all booked and ready to go on a school trip to the Netherlands. Very excited of course having never travelled outside of the UK. I was so happy that finally it was affordable for us to send him after landing my dream job.

It was also my 40th last year so we were planning a trip somewhere for that, nothing amazing to most just a long weekend somewhere, maybe Bruge or Budapest, but incredible for me and my kids.

COVID meant I lost my dream job and now we’re looking at holidays abroad becoming unaffordable again.

It’s fucking shit. What’s more shit however is hearing people in laws moaning that their 2 foreign holidays a year are being put back.

My heart pumps piss 🙄

TooMuchYarn · 20/02/2021 00:38

There are few countries which will have more than their over 70s (at best) vaccinated by this summer. So holidays abroad are pretty much off the table until at least Autumn. Next year should be better though.

Ikeameatballs · 20/02/2021 07:55

Our once in a life time trip to California with the dc was cancelled last year and I can’t see it happening this year. I do keep looking at holidays in Europe but I can’t bear to book now and risk being disappointed again. I’m also not prepared to spent 2k plus on a UK holiday that the dc (11 and 15 in the Summer) won’t appreciate and where the weather is unreliable.

Onedaysomedaynowadays · 20/02/2021 08:00

My best friend works for a holiday company and their bookings are so strong for the second half of the year that they've had to ask staff to cancel annual leave.
I'm having to ask my team at work to take turns to go on holiday as they're all desperate to go abroad the minute lock down lifts.
I think there is a lot of pent up demand

DinosaurDiana · 20/02/2021 08:01

I’ve vaccinated a couple of over 70’s who have said that they won’t be having their second jabs when they are due because they will be on holiday !!
It seems that some people aren’t that bothered, they just want to get away.

DinosaurDiana · 20/02/2021 08:03

I know that my teenager will refuse to go abroad until he has had his jabs.

Onedaysomedaynowadays · 20/02/2021 08:07

I'd go tomorrow if I could

We won't be going abroad for years, if at all during our lifetimes. I loathe and fear heat, so Turkey's out. The EU is going to be as expensive as Sweden soon as the pound declines. There's the little matter of my approaching wheelchair if my knee isn't sorted soon as well.

The pound has been going up against the euro for weeks?

I have a holiday to Greece booked for august and I will be on the plane if they let me! I want to go back to travelling ASAP. I'm bored stiff of walks in the UK!!

NeedToGetOuttaHere · 20/02/2021 08:55

user85963842 me too!

im5050 · 20/02/2021 08:59

I’ve just booked to join my sister and her family in turkey next May
£700 for two weeks all inclusive in a really nice hotel that I’ve stayed at before
That’s include flights and transfers
I’ve only paid £100 deposit
And nothing till feb 2022

ConeHat · 20/02/2021 11:56

I wouldnt risk booking a holiday abroad this year. It's not just about it being cancelled any more, it's about rules changing while your away and you having to stay in a hotel on your return. As a parent of four that's 6 x 2k hotel fees your talking about selling the house money.

I think companys will go bust. I'm not sure I want to risk UK weather for the rest of my life holidaying here. It's nice, dont get md wrong but our weather isnt Mediterranean.

Also we dont spend like we do say in Spain or Greece so that money is staying in my bank, not being pumped into the UK economy. If we go on holiday in the UK you can go all inclusive and full board is way more than abroad. So wego self catering, buy food like a supermarket as we do when we are home, maybe have a few lunches out but we eat in big chains in the evening as kids are not welcome to be seen in the evening as they are in mainland Europe.

Abroad with kids is all inclusive, UK for us with kids is budget self catering.

Maybe things will improve in 2022, maybe travel companies will collapse but even if they do, someone will rise up to take their place. We haven't been abroad on a family holiday for 4.5 years. If needs be we are talking about 1 parent going with two kids alternate years but I'm going to travel still. Life is very small when your world stops at cornwall
