Anyone know about hanging art?

Hi I ordered a piece of art. It was stated its on canvas.
Its arrived but it is rolled up canvas and very large ( 156cm x 75cm approx)
How on earth do I hang it? Do I frame it?

I thought it was coming as the solid canvas blocks that you can buy.🙄😆

Is it an original piece? You'll need to pay a proper framer to do it well. I mean you CAN try yourself...lots of tutorials on YouTube.

Laiste · 18/02/2021 14:22

Is it printed canvas or original oils or acrylics?

If i were you i'd get a professional framer to put it on a wooden frame for you.

It will need to have stretchers too, in the form of extra bars across the back to keep the canvas taught.

Get them to put the fixings and hanging wire/s on as well :)

Get a professional to do it 100%. Especially if it's expensive.

Thank you laiste and FourtunesFave
I've phoned up a local framer i didn't even know we had them in my town! I've got an appointment in the morning on my way to work.
Thanks for the tip about asking for hanging wire!
I'm excited now!

Ooh just to add - you probably know this - it wont need to be under glass. It sounds as if you want a 'wrap around' frame - where the edges wrap around the wood so you can still see the paint colours from the side rather than it disappearing under an actual traditional frame.

Prepare for it to be expensive and if i were you i'd get a couple of quotes.

Let us know how you get on :)

notacooldad · 18/02/2021 14:44

Thanks Laiste.
There is a gap between the painting finishing and the edge of the cloth for the work to go round the wood.
I'll let you know how it looks when its done.

You need to have this stretched, which is cheaper than framing. It really should have said in the description when you bought it. It's a simple job for a professional framer. If you are quoted a high price it is an easy diy task (ie I've done it myself Smile). The trick is to make sure the two diagonal measurements are equal, which means the stretcher is square. Also don't pull the canvas too hard as it can rip.

Thanks. I have taken it to a professional framers. I had a choice kf 3 options. It wasn't expensive at all. I can't wait to get it back!

That's good.

For future reference if a painting is described as being on canvas it just refers to the material it's painted on. It would usually mean a stretched canvas ready to hang but it's not automatic. But usually if it's unstrechted it will say so.
But it's expensive to send large stretched paintings especially overseas so what you spend on stretching should be offset by what you've saved on shipping.
Hope it looks good once it's up.

@laiste
I said id let you know how I got on.
My piece of art came back from the framers yesterday and I am so happy with it. I'm really pleased. I couldn't stop smiling last night every time I looked at it!

One more question though. I knew exactly where I wanted it to go. However when my husband came home ( and loved it as well) he pointed out that the radiator would be below it and was concerned it maybe damage the piece. Is he right to be concerned? I really hope not as I had bought it for a particular place.

Wonderful! I’m so pleased you love it! Well, there might be chance the heat might warp the wood, or make the paint dry right out and crack, AND, IME lots of dust seems to always gather round above radiators. But none of that might happen! You could always put a radiator shelf over the radiator to deflect the heat from going straight up?

Enjoy anyway 😀

inchplant · 05/03/2021 13:51

How much was it, if you don’t mind me asking?

pandora206 · 05/03/2021 13:59

What is the medium - oil or acrylic? Oil is liable to drying out and cracking if heated whereas acrylic is pretty durable and shouldn't deteriorate.

notacooldad · 05/03/2021 14:05

The painting was about £800.
It cist £66 to have it stretched
pandora206
It is acrylic.

notacooldad - it should be fine as it's acrylic. Acrylic paint is basically liquidised plastic and very durable and stable over time and doesn't absorb (or release) moisture once dry. The only risk would be to the frame warping which shouldn't happen unless the wall becomes hot. (I paint in both acrylics and oils. Oils are not as stable and apt to change colour and crack over time, though they have their attractions).

It would be lovely to see an image of your painting. There is nothing to compare with an original piece of art that is treasured.

AgentProvocateur · 05/03/2021 15:49

I’d love to see a picture of it. I love buying art.

orangenasturtium · 05/03/2021 15:56

If anyone else has a canvas to stretch, these are great stretchers that you can easily use yourself without needing any specialist tools:

www.fujifilm.eu/uk/products/photofinishing/large-format-printing/wunderbars

You staple the canvas to the stretcher bars as usual but they automatically tension themselves when you release the pins in the frame.

IcelandThree · 05/03/2021 19:22

I wouldn't hang it too close to the radiator - frames can and do warp, especially as there is no glass to keep it rigid.
