If you don't treat yourself with food, what do you treat yourself with?

I don't have an issue with food but I am one of those people who does have to constantly watch their weight, mainly because I love food. I really enjoy eating and always have done. If I ever have to go on a diet, I find myself constantly hungry and constantly thinking about food, no matter what diet it is!

I was reading an article the other day that said something that differentiates people like me to other people is that I regard food as a treat, something that picks me up when I'm feeling down or consoles me if I've had a bad day. And it really rang a bell. I have a really tough day at work today so after I walked the dog, I went into the coffee shop and got a take away coffee and bun and it immediately made me feel better!

What it made me think though, is if you don't do that, what do you do that picks you up in such an instant and quick way? I would like to try and change my mindset around this but realise it's not particularly easy and wanted to try and understand what other people did (I'm now nearly 50 so this has been a lifelong thing for me!)

Sushi.
Non alcoholic beer (the nice ones).
Hot bath.
Nice new top I don’t really need.

Zebrasandfairytales · 18/02/2021 18:48

I’ve lost five stone since July and I have spent evenings drinking lots of herbal teas and doing lots of pampering!

Yarn. I have a huge stash. Some i just like to touch. Most I will turn into something. Usually for DDIL or DGD

Puffalicious · 18/02/2021 18:55

This!

Time on my own in the front room with TV for ME (Bridgerton!) whilst DS1 is out, DS2 and DH streaming extreme sport videos next door and DS3 having time on his Nintendo Switch! With Galaxy light hot choc (38 calories, a steal!) in my favourite William Morris mug. Ahhhh...

If you don't treat yourself with food, what do you treat yourself with?
redcandlelight · 18/02/2021 18:55

Lookingforwardto2021 · 18/02/2021 19:05

Yup same as you OP. I have to remind myself I am not a dog and therefore should not be rewarding myself with biscuits

I had to really train myself out of food-rewards - I think it is much easier than other stuff because it’s instant gratification, whereas most other things take time. (Especially now since just popping to John Lewis at lunch and buying a lipstick is not a thing any more.)

Agree with pp on baths, flowers (currently have a house full of £1 daffs), books, magazines, wine, spending time doing my nails. Not really a treat or a reward, but a half hour playing with my cat and one if her toys always cheers me up too.

I'm destined to be either fat or a wino by the looks of it - all other options sound utterly boring!

Baths and candles??!!

Fuck, no!!!

Don't worry, you don't have to choose one or the other Wink

Whatever floats your boat.
I am nearing 60, I see people my age in such poor physical states their lives are difficult.
I like to take care of myself.

Oh I bet you're fun!! Confused
BookWorm45 · 18/02/2021 21:03

Reading.
Bath.
Watching comedy while lying on sofa

rooarsome · 18/02/2021 21:11

I need some new ideas too! It's so easy for me to reach for the biscuits and I rarely get "me time" with kids clambering over me all day.
I've been enjoying experimenting with my nails lately though- as a nurse I can't wear nail varnish but as I'm on mat leave I'm indulging Smile

Mum2jenny · 18/02/2021 21:15

Wine and books

That is sad. Who taught you that adulthood didn't include fun? Actually, treats are incredibly motivational. They fire dopamine receptors in the brain which makes us more prone to virtuous circles of activity: work hard, play hard. No treats leads to demotivation.
Littlefiendsusan · 18/02/2021 21:52

I'm trying to move away from food orientated treats too. Jigsaws and books help.
