Anyone Have a Self Cleaning Oven?

This is very boring I know but I wanted to ask anyone who has a self cleaning oven do you leave the racks and shelves in when the oven is doing a self clean? I don't, but I was moaning to a friend the other day that although I love my oven I still end up having to clean the racks and shelves separately and also the glass door as this doesn't seem to clean. She told me she just leaves all her racks and shelves in when cleaning.

Does anyone else do this?

No the instructions say to take it all out so that's what I do. It is a pain having to scrub them separately! But I assume there's a reason you can't leave them in there.

Cally70 · 16/02/2021 15:49

I leave them in and they get cleaned

Outbutnotoutout · 16/02/2021 15:50

Please can someone tell me what a self clean oven is...

I imagine loads of arms.coming out the oven and it scrubbing itself.clean 🤷‍♀️

Yes I leave them in so they get cleaned. Mine just warns they may discolour. Who cares!?!?

Outbut - the inside has a coating that when turned on to Self Clean sheds all the crap and leaves a little pile of ash in the bottom you can just wipe up. V clever. It goes up to a volcanic temperature to achieve this from what I can tell.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 16/02/2021 15:58

We put water in the bottom of ours and the steam is meant to make the crap easy to wipe off.
In reality it does nothing at all except heat the oven up.

Angrymum22 · 16/02/2021 16:02

You’ve reminded me that I need to clean my oven.
They are known as pyrolytic ovens, some ovens are classed as self cleaning but just have a mat coating that doesn’t allow food to bake on and stick.
I remember someone asked me what I was doing when I got home on Christmas Eve one year, they were amazed that I was going to clean my oven, until I explained that all I needed to do was switch it on to clean and then the oven did the rest while I had a couple of gin & tonics.

wsbts · 16/02/2021 16:13

Our Neff oven specifically states take all the fittings out and clean separately. There will no doubt be a warranty issue if there are problems later regarding the fittings.

In fact its just finished cleaning and it is brilliant would not have any other takes the hassle out of cleaning.

I need to see if mine can do this x
BarbaraofSeville · 16/02/2021 16:18

Yes, it says take the fittings out, so I do and put them in the dishwasher.

It doesn't get them spotless, but it makes them clean enough for my low standards. The door glass also goes in there and comes out just about clean.

I'm now annoyed because we had to replace one of our ovens due to a grill fire and we could have kept the old fittings to experiment with leaving them in during the pyro cycle.

Icequeen01 · 16/02/2021 17:01

OMG - why have I never thought to put my shelves etc in the dishwasher!! That's pure genius. I'm not sure I would take the glass off the door though. I took it out recently and it was much fiddler than my old non self cleaning oven to put back in.

I am not going to chance leaving themracks and shelves in then as I'm a bit anal and like to see a shiny shelf!

Angrymum22 · 16/02/2021 17:08

I meant to add that I put my shelves through the dishwasher. The only trouble I’ve had is that it loosens some stuff but does not get rid of it. These bits shrink when they are heated up and fall into the food on the shelves below when you are cooking. So maybe need to put through the dishwasher twice.

Icequeen01 · 16/02/2021 17:14

Thanks for the tip @Angrymum22 - I will watch out for that!

When we had a new kitchen we had all neff stuff so we were lucky enough to get a home visit from the Neff lady to go through how to use them, and she told us to put the oven shelves in the dishwasher too although I don't find it brings them up that well (possibly because I don't do it often enough) so I always soak them (everything including the side supports etc) in an oven pride bag overnight the day before I do the pyrolitic clean and they come up like new with no scrubbing or effort whatsoever, they just need a good rinse. I use a razor blade scraper on the glass (and any stubborn bits) and then wipe over with a bit of the oven pride and bam - new oven!

Icequeen01 · 16/02/2021 19:07

I use the Oven Pride bags as well @iknowimcoming but I'm always petrified of getting any of the solution on my oak worktops. It turns into a military operation getting the trays from my back door (I put the bag outside my back door) into the sink without the stuff dripping anywhere. I do also used the solution on the glass door but I can never understand why that doesn't get clean when I put the oven on pyrolysis. I think I'm just lazy!

Acovic · 16/02/2021 19:11

Miele here.

I take them out and run them through the dishwasher on an intensive cycle.

I adore my pyrolytic oven.

Icequeen01 · 16/02/2021 20:00

I love mine too and would never go back to one I have to clean myself. I feel similar about my hose tap. Such a small thing that makes my life so much easier. I bloody love it!

OP posts:
Roasteros · 16/02/2021 20:50

I take the shelves out, but the manual says not to put the racks in the dishwasher. No idea why. They're just like any other oven racks. I was thinking of using oven brite instead, although I can't see what harm a dishwashing cycle would do?

longtompot · 16/02/2021 23:28

I looked up just how these ovens of magic work and they are now on my must have for the new kitchen. Apparently due to the extreme heat and for the length of time the self clean takes, the shelves can warp and discolour if left in.

Icequeen01 · 16/02/2021 23:44

I promise you, you won't regret getting one! It even tells you when it needs cleaning (even if it won't do the racks and shelves!).

OP posts:
grassisjeweled · 17/02/2021 02:18

DH does this and pretends its actual work. I think he takes the racks out.

It's mint afterwards though

grassisjeweled · 17/02/2021 02:19

All you're left with is a bit of dust on the bottom. It really IS magic, Harry.

Hurtandupset2 · 17/02/2021 02:33

Loved mine until the glass went bang during a clean when it was almost 3 yrs old. I'd only used the feature maybe 10 times, so not loads.

It was a hassle getting them to replace the glass even though it was within warranty and the very next time I used the self clean function, the glass again went bang and shattered whilst I was stood next to it.
Luckily I was there, as the oven carried on heating up and trying to clean. I had to switch it off at the mains to stop it.
Got it replaced for the 3rd time but I'm now a bit scared to use the self clean feature 😒

Marchitectmummy · 17/02/2021 02:44

Ours is Neff and we take the racks out too, the instructors are quite clear on ours that they must be removed.

Smashed glass that is petrifying, did it crack rather than fall out completely. Don't they increase the heat to 400 degrees or something.
