Sofas - how often do you buy new ones?

Scrolling through FaceBook marketplace and I'm amazed by all the nearly new sofas that are for sale or free....

Some (most I've realised Blush) are in better condition than mine (cats have ruined mine from scratching), but mine were second-hand to start with.

Just got me thinking how often other people buy new ones. I'm admittedly a bit of a skinflint but they're not a cheap purchase and seem a huge, expensive luxury to me. Not sure I'd ever have the spare £££s to indulge, much as I'd love to.

Now feeling a bit fed up that so many people seem to have such beautiful homes...mine is very nice and kept well, but nothing is new or fancy and there's a lot we don't have - never had a dressing table or a chest of drawers for instance. For context I live alone now DC have moved out and before that struggled as a single parent, 'new' new was always just out of reach.

This is about more than sofas I guess, I've realised lately that the sum total of my life and possessions is very little and that makes me a bit sad.

But! On a lighter note, how often do you splash out? On sofas or other 'big' purchases.

If you do the DFS HP then you pay for 4 years, although you could shorten that. So I imagine people get new ones once it's finished. The cheaper ones only last that long !

I bought a leather sofa outright about 6 years ago then moved and matched 4 years ago it as had space for two in the new lounge. I've just got rid of the first and put the newer one in the playroom, replacing a trashed 3 year old DFS sofa and got different ones for the lounge on the 4 years HP. So I'm doing the every 4 years, my taste has changed, kids and dogs wear things out. The dog is not allowed on the sofa, although he thinks he is.

Things look better than they are in photos, lots of sofas I see are in a right state and people can't be bother to hire a van for the tip or pay the council to collect them. I don't believe people sell sofas in great condition. I sold a leather corner sofa and I had to do so much cleaning and buffing to get it ready to sell, it was ok, which I stated it certainly wasn't like new.

I was given a very elderly sofa when I bought my first home 27 years ago, replaced that 20 years ago with a sofa bed, then 13 years ago bought two sofas from DFS. Last week we got new sofas on ebay (apparently they changed their mind on colour, even though these are a neutral colour). So 9 years on average

I bought my current one 6 years ago when I moved into this house. My old sofa was way too big for the space here so I couldn't bring it with me.

Will probably buy a bigger sofa when I next move house (the living room here is unusually small really) but will also keep the current one and put it in a different room if possible. I think of a sofa as something to keep for years though, I'm pretty sure the one in my childhood home was about 20 years old when mum replaced it.

Three in 12 years.the first was second hand for m a charity shop and just awful, it lasted about three months. Next one new from DFS, looked good but deteriorated quickly. The seats were fibre and saggy, the inner lining ripped all by itself, and the scatterback cushions were a pain to pummel every day. Four years later we got a beaut from next. Still going strong six years later. So comfy, it has a formal back, and foam filled cushions. Still love it.

We bought a new sofa after living in our house for 3 years. Before that and when we were in rented, we just had second hand ones.
I doubt we will replace ours for 8-10 years. Maybe if we move house and this one won't fit (it's a corner unit)

We got ours when we moved her 20 years ago.
It was second hand, and at least 10 years old then.

It probably is reaching the end of its life as the base fell through a coue of years ago and it has a plank of wood holding it up.
It's ery comfortable though.
