Podcasts to improve general knowledge

NC for this.

I feel like I have a huge chunk of knowledge missing and basically, I want to change that. I think it’s mostly around history/politics but also the way things work eg economics or simple science etc. I have an awful memory and just can’t retain information all that well. I’m looking for podcasts to help me improve my general knowledge and understanding of how things work. Can you recommend any?

I would like to know this too! Sorry not to be able to help!

No, but I’m watching with interest!

I listen to the History of English, as I am fascinated by language and the evolution of words. I also love Mythunderstood, which is a funny look at Greek and Norse mythology. Not quite what you are looking for but ones I found fascinating.

Is there a particular aspect of history you're looking for? You could always search that for any specific podcasts. Stuff you should know is a great network and I'm sure they have a history specific podcast. Dan snow does a history podcast too that's good.

Ologies is a brilliant podcast for this and the host is fantastic

It's not a podcast but if you don't mind branching into audiobooks, Bill Bryson's Short History of Almost Everything is really good for science in its broadest sense. Andrew Marr has done a good history of the UK post-war politics. Jared Diamond's Guns, Germs and Steel is also excellent - and I think the more recent Sapiens might be good too, but haven't read it.

You're Dead to Me and Home School History

How to invent a country

Infinite Monkey Cage

More or Less - statistics, but also discusses a lot of science based stuff and invaluable reminder about critically analysing any stats and data you read.

Something rhymes with purple about language with Suzie Dent and Gyles Brandreth.

50 things that made the modern economy.

All except something rhymes with purple are on the BBC but I get all mine through Antennapod.

I think the Guardians Today In Focus is excellent

In Our Time on Radio 4 is always interesting and covers all sorts of things

BarbaraofSeville · 15/02/2021 13:07

The Curious Cases of Rutherford and Fry and the Elements series are more good BBC Science podcasts.

Thanks for the recommendations. I will have a look at them. @mrstea301 I don't have a specific area of interest but feel that I need to have a broader understanding of the past. Particularly as I have DC now and worry about being asked lots of questions I can't answer!
