@BertieBotts

You put a t-shirt or long-sleeved top under. Jumper/sweater/cardigan over the top if you're still cold.

Maybe it's a miscommunication in what constitutes a jumper? DH seems to consider what I call a cardigan or hoodie (and sometimes jumper) a jacket. He thinks all long-sleeved tops are jumpers.

Wait what? That means he thinks shirts are jumpers? Confused

I wear dungarees ALL the time. I think everything goes under. I wouldnt wear a really chunky knitted top with it.

Surely if you're wearing stuff over the top you may as well just wear jeans??

I think the people that say no to dungarees on adults, obvs can't pull them off

A lot of women do and look good in them.

@BertieBotts

Well dungarees are annoying to go to the loo in in general :o
Hear hear. I am also old enough to remember the brief fashion for wearing those boiler suit things. Now they were a nightmare when you wanted a wee. All those buttons, all that fabric........

Well no not shirts like with a button and collar. But something that is exactly like a t-shirt, maybe slightly heavier material is a jumper to him just because it has long sleeves Confused

I suppose it is a bit confusing because I don't have an actual word for long-sleeved tops, like this, but I would definitely consider it an under layer, I wouldn't put anything under it except maybe a vest.

And likewise I don't have a single all-encompassing word that covers jumpers, sweaters, hoodies etc but I would consider them an over-layer, that needs something underneath it like a t-shirt, shirt, top, etc. Not just a vest. That's why I think this layer would go over the dungarees as well.

DH considers a hoodie or knitted cardigan with a zip, especially if thicker, to be a jacket and will use it as a coat for DC Confused

Under in my opinion. Not that I would ever wear them.

ladygindiva · 15/02/2021 19:25

It's the ratio of close fitting to baggy that decides this. Eg snug fitting dungarees, huge slouchy jumper, jumper goes on top. Baggier dungarees with a close fitting jumper the dungarees are worn over the top. I prefer option 2 fwiw.

It's OK. I am slowly training him in how not to get judged by German Omas and now our children go out appropriately dressed in full rain trousers, waterproof coat, gloves, hood and hat. I am yet to convince him on the essential nature of the loop scarf :o
