Really boring post ahead....EDF or SSE? (I know, contain your excitement)

Posting in chat for traffic. For various dull reasons I need to choose between EDF or SSE to switch supplier for both electricity and gas. I'm currently on a pre payment meter which wasn't down to anything I've done, it was in the house when I moved in and my current supplier (Scottish Power) want to charge me a horrific amount to change to a credit meter. And their customer service is awful. I'd rather go with one of the smaller companies but it seems it's going to be easier to switch to a big 6, get onto a credit plan with them and THEN make the switch.

So my priority at the moment is customer service and getting shit done. As I'll initially still be on a prepayment meter when I move suppliers (can't make both changes in one go) their tariffs are less of a concern at the moment. So out of the two, which in your experiences actually get stuff happening when they say they will, don't bugger things up etc. British Gas aren't carrying out any non emergency work at the moment, Eon put me off after they took double direct debits before Christmas, and Npower are being taken over by Eon. So EDF or SSE it is!

Have at it...good or bad!

I have an EDF and an SSE property. For once in my life I don’t think I have a strong feeling. Both online account management is good.have had more complex
Account stuff to do with sse - all worked out fine with no hiccups. Maybe others’ll be along with some kind of horror story.

Notthisnotthat · 14/02/2021 23:05

I'm with SSE, never had an issue and like being part of the SSE rewards scheme for early access to concert tickets.

HeronLanyon · 14/02/2021 23:09

not really ? You joking ? - seems like another life - but actually I didn’t know that. How odd that seems.

lydia2021 · 14/02/2021 23:15

Neither. Octopus best one recommended by Which.
Am with Octopus, I have weekly bill showing how much I use weekly. So I can increase or decrease direct debit.

Terrible problems with SSE lately, very poor CS, smart meter not smart, final account totting up wrong, no credit applied to account when added remotely on the app. Also a lack of communication between fitters for gas meter and CS, left without gas for days. A very shoddy experience overall.

@lydia2021 as I explained in my op, I can't go with a smaller supplier because they aren't able to switch me with a prepay meter. So I'd have to change to a credit meter with scottish power first and scottish power want to charge me an extortionate amount to do so. Therefore I need to switch to another big six first who then won't charge me to change the type of meter and then, once that's secured, switch over to a supplier like Octopus

Oh dear @Monkey500 that doesn't sound encouraging. Are you prepay?

OP posts:
Monkey500 · 15/02/2021 20:22

@MollyBloomYes
Yes prepay. Was during switching from ex tenant to ourselves the from us to new tenant, they really left her in the lurch. And then a few weeks later their whole payment system always down for a week and they couldn't maintain supply and offered her a hotel Sad

lydia2021 · 15/02/2021 20:29

Hi. Its Lydia. I was with SSE, a big supplier when I moved in. But a month later , moved to Otopus. It wasnt without its issues with SSE, most big companies base your monthly bill on an estimate. But I challenged this as i had only been with SSE a month. Companies share info to your next company. I challenged it all. Took 3 months. but Octopus were marvellous. I took weekly readings, still do. And submit them weekly so not overcharged

MollyBloomYes · 15/02/2021 21:24

Oh god @Monkey500 that sounds absolutely horrendous! Food for thought, thank you!

@lydia2021 I don't know how to explain it differently-I'm on a prepayment meter. I don't have monthly or weekly bills, I have a key and a card that I have to physically take to a shop to top up. Octopus were one of the first companies I looked at and they can't take new customers with this type of meter. Which is why I keep saying that I can't use Octopus and need to use one of the big six. It's why I said that in my original post

SEE have been taken over by Ovo now.My payments have never been so low as this winter,so go for it.

Caramelblonde · 15/02/2021 22:07

Sse

Ohdeariedear · 15/02/2021 22:12

SSE gas and electric here too, for two properties. No issues, I’ve just had my d/d reduced after the latest meter readings (but I knew their Initial estimate was far too high so was not surprised).

murbblurb · 15/02/2021 22:13

All of which proves that the much maligned big six actually do something that the smaller money grabbers wont do...

I am with octopus because they are the only supplier that don't mandate a smart meter, but I don't like their greenwash.

Op, price is all that matters. Any company can cock up customer service.

lydia2021 · 15/02/2021 22:35

Hi again. Your getting some sound advice on here. I just wanted to say I get the Martun Lewis MSE , money saving expert, sent by email to me.. there is sound advice on it regarding electricty. He also has something called RESOLVER on there, which is free to use. And I believe, they can sort an issue out for you, free of charge. Worth a try, or even a look. I think I saw an article in a paper

MollyBloomYes · 16/02/2021 02:08

@murbblurb ordinarily I would have agreed with you, anyone can have a bad experience etc. But Scottish Power have been so unrelentingly awful every step of the way and so consistently dreadful no matter who I speak to that I felt like I had to double check the others weren't the same before moving!

Prepayment meter tariffs are nationally capped so there's not been an enormous amount of difference as far as I can see. Once I've been successful in finally moving over to a credit meter then I'll definitely be looking at pricing! For now I just want to move away from Scottish Power and get going on getting rid of this bloody prepayment meter that I've been lumbered with-I've never been late to pay any bill, have a great credit score etc, so it's annoying to have to jump through all the hoops as if I haven't 🙄
