My father in law always buys me gifts of scented air diffusers, candles and his latest offering is a pot of pot pourri , l hate the stuff, l hate fake smells. I have always felt confident my house doesn’t smell. Windows open, linen smell when washing and l can usually smell coffee when l get home from work.

I say thank you as l don’t want to seem ungrateful but today l am wondering if really my house just smells and l am unaware, l just asked my dh and he said no, but maybe he is nose blind too. We have no pets and we don’t smoke, although we have two children who can be grubby standing still in an empty room, this is there main talent !!!

Would you ask him or am l being defensive? He is in our bubble so he comes to our home, maybe he doesn’t like the coffee smell or The smell of the washing powder hhmm.

Ach, it's just an easy gift. Like bath salts. He probably grew up learning that they're something every householder uses and because they're consumables (pot pourri does fade... eventually Grin) you can never have too many.

I’ll probably be told I’m being ageist, but it honestly just sounds like the kind of gift an older man would think a woman would like.

Tell him you're allergic to them and suggest a bottle of plonk instead 😀
