Slightly raised platelets. Should I be worried?

Hi,

I have this running in General Health, but thought I'd post here too, for traffic, just in case anyone has experience with this.

So I've been having some abdominal pain (lower right) on and off for months, maybe a year and am finally having investigations. I have incredibly heavy periods, which cause anemia if I don't take iron tablets, which I obviously am!

I take the lowest possible dose which keeps it in my system, but prevents nasty iron side effects. I have been feeling tired and achy again, like I did before taking the supplements years ago, so almost hoped that my blood test results would just show that I needed to top up my iron a little, but it didn't. Apparently my hemoglobin was fine, but my platelets were just outside normal. Think it was 425. The receptionist said that it had a note next to the raised marker saying "no further action". Normally that would obviously put my mind at rest, but I have a scan booked in for the abdominal pain, so I'm wondering if they've said no further action because I'm having a scan. Or would they still want to repeat the test anyway if it was raised to a concerning level?

I have really bad anxiety, as is probably evidentso I'm massively worrying about this.

TIA

I wouldn’t worry. Both my mum and I had this recently. She was retested and it was within normal. I had anemia due to severe anemia. I saw an excellent haemotologist who didn’t think my raised numbers were a concern. He said it was linked to my heavy bleeding.

Thanks @Milomonster. If I was still anaemic I would think that would make sense, as it looks as though it's one of the most common causes. Whereas I still have ridiculously heavy periods, my iron tablets seem to be working as far as my hemoglobin levels looked. Could that still be a cause though?

I recall my heam saying that raised platelet was a sign that I was bleeding. Probably the body is working hard to replace platelets. I’d have a chat with your GP but I don’t think it’s anything to worry about unless the numbers are going up.

My platelets shot up when i was pregnant with DC2. My consultant sent me to see a haematologist and he said that it was my body’s way if preparing for blood loss during labour.

I was tested after i gave birth and they were fine.

Who knows why they didnt rise with DC1 & 3. The doctors had no idea!

@Milomonster, thanks again. I'll have a chat (hopefully) with my GP next week.

@MrsDThomas, that's interesting. Maybe my body is permanently preparing me, given I lose so much blood every month.
