A goshawk maybe? Beautiful!

GiveMyRegardsToYourLizard · 14/02/2021 07:54

Sparrow hawk?

LubaLuca · 14/02/2021 07:56

It looks like a goshawk. How big is it, roughly?

My son took this in our back garden.
He saw something swoop down and it was a sparrow hawk catching a blue tit.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 14/02/2021 08:00

Looks like a sparrowhawk.
I saw one up close when we used to have an aviary full of finches in the garden. It tried to get one, but instead landed with a thump on the chicken wire roof.
It then fell off and rolled around on our lawn until it took off again. I had to pretty much sit on our cat the whole time as she wanted to go and pounce on the big bird. Even a bit stunned I reckon the hawk would have won.
Looked just like your picture, except a bit stunned.

I suggested sparrow hawk but actually I think it looks a bit bigger than that.

SourMilkGhyll · 14/02/2021 08:04

Sparrow hawk I think.

sandgrown · 14/02/2021 08:04

A Buzzard?

BamboozledandBefuddled · 14/02/2021 08:05

My first thought was sparrow hawk and 20-30 cm sounds about right.

GuyFawkesDay · 14/02/2021 08:05

Sparrowhawk

You rarely see goshawks. They're very very nervous, woodland dwellers. Sparrowhawks are far more brazen and will happily shred their lunch on your lawn.

Wanderbust · 14/02/2021 08:08

Sparrowhawk. Female I think. The size is right for that.

februaryrain · 14/02/2021 08:24

Thanks so much everyone, sounds like a sparrow hawk then. It was very beautiful and such a treat to see one in our garden.
(All the other birds had scarpered though😁)
