City Graduate jobs?

Solasum · 14/02/2021 07:29

I have several family members who ordinarily would be expecting to start new graduate jobs this year, in law, finance and consultancy. Before I put my foot in it with them, just wondering whether anyone here is able to comment on whether firms will be taking an intake as planned, or if it is more likely they will defer or cancel new starters

Our company (not City but big FTSE) is doing online assessment centres this year. Still recruiting grads

pitterpatterrain · 14/02/2021 07:36

Yes although we already did the big undergrad batch back in November (consulting)

Solasum · 14/02/2021 07:40

And are they actually going into offices, or set up to work remotely?

My law firm is taking its usual planned intake. I'm not sure what will happen in September 21 but the September 20 cohort started remotely.

Solasum · 14/02/2021 07:46

@eurochick that must be very challenging for all concerned

Ours is recruiting as usual (not sure if same number of places though) I expect it’ll be remote same as last year. How did you put your foot in it?

Mamagotskills · 14/02/2021 07:51

I should add, I’ve had someone on our grad programme in my team for last 6 months, it’s had its challenges and not ideal but it’s been fine

Solasum · 14/02/2021 07:52

@Mamagotskills I haven’t yet, I just know that one of those concerned is quite sensitive, and don’t want to go in breezily ‘so how is the new job going’ if actually she won’t have been able to start. This is not something I would have worried about pre Covid.

It's definitely not the usual grad experience which has quite a social side but the September 20 cohort in my team have settled in really well.

Mamagotskills · 14/02/2021 08:00

Ah sorry I misunderstood! Hopefully it’ll all be ok

Retrogal · 14/02/2021 08:06

My experience is that the grads have mostly adapted really quickly and easily to remote working.

My accountancy firm is continuing with their grad intake. All work equipment (I.e. laptop) gets delivered to their home and all work is done remotely.

We do have some offices open but it isn't for meetings, only for people to go in if they cannot work from home or wellbeing.

GnomeDePlume · 14/02/2021 08:16

We have a grad intake for the first time in my department, not City but professional.

They have had a mix of both remote and in person sessions. So far so good.

ApolloandDaphne · 14/02/2021 08:22

My DD and many of her friends all started graduate schemes last year. They are all working remotely and it seems to be fine. DD has been in her office only once since her September start. Her main mentor lives in NZ and she seems to manage this fine too. Young people are very adaptable.

bevelino · 14/02/2021 08:43

2 of my dds are due to start City grad schemes in September. Both completed internships last summer and worked partly online and partly in the office.

Some of dds friends had their grad schemes deferred last year but very few were cancelled altogether.

pitterpatterrain · 17/02/2021 10:55

Everyone who has joined since last March has joined remotely across the firm

I do think it takes the new grad more effort to ask for help etc though
