For me, she showed me round an interview site. I got the job. I was mighty grateful. You?

My car got stuck in snow, a stranger got a shovel and dug the tyres out without being asked.

Wallabyone · 13/02/2021 22:09

A lovely man with a van jump started my car when I had only half turned it off because it was sweltering and I thought it would be ok to sit in it with the air con on. I was heavily pregnant and he was very kind.

A lady brought my dd a replacement baby chino after she had spilt it all over the table. Told me I was a great mum and doing ok when I was at breaking point with preschooler and baby.

VikingLady · 13/02/2021 22:26

A very sweet elderly man asked me if I was ok and could he help me, because I was crying in the street. I was actually trialling contact lenses for the first time, not really crying, but it was lovely of him to care!

TimeIhadaNameChange · 13/02/2021 22:34

Picked me up from the street, tried to take me home so she could patch me up and, failing that, popped into a chemist to get me supplies then brought them to me in a cafe where I was meeting a friend (and wouldn't take the money for them).

'Twas between the first two lockdowns which made it even more amazing that she came to the aid of a stranger.

I went to a cash point and withdrew £50. I left the money there and didn’t realise until I got back to the car. This was a big supermarket car park so it took quite few minutes. I walked back to the cash point assuming it was pointless and a nice man was holding my money waiting for someone to turn up looking for it. I gave him a big hug..

In my early twenties at a bus stop after dark. A man started hassling me - he was drunk and quite intimidating. An older woman stepped in and told him to get lost.

I had terrible PND after dd1 and I had no confidence at all. I went into the city to meet a friend for lunch when dd was about a year old. It poured rain and she hated the rain cover and got really upset. I stupidly stopped in a shop doorway and took her out of her pushchair for a minute to try and calm her down.
Big mistake! She didn't want to go back in a and kept wriggling and squirming out and I could fasten the straps.
It was a really light Maclaren and with the nappy bag on the handles it kept tipping over when I tried to get dd strapped in.
A very kind elderly woman came over, just smiled and held on to it so I could get dd in. I thanked her, she never said a word, just smiled and gave me a pat on the back.
So kind, I've never forgotten her and dd is a teenager now.

Gave me £1 for parking. Asked if she had change of £10. I would have had to go back to shops to buy something. I had young child with me and she said how much is parking, I said £1 and she said here you go. So very kind was lovely of her and I appreciated it.

A stranger took me home when I was about 15 and had fainted outside on the street. They asked me where I loved and said they'd take me home. I got in the car because they had kids but jeez when I think now it was kinda dangerous but I felt so ill. Kind of them really though. I remember these young kids just staring at me like who the fuck are you? 😂

Last Easter (lockdown) a lovely neighbour dropped Easter eggs off around the houses on our estate with a note saying hope everyone’s OK and they wanted to make people smile. It did!!

I work in retail, and some customers have been wonderful. One dropped off a bottle of wine each, another bought us a box of chocolates each, and so many say ‘thank you for working throughout the pandemic and always being so cheerful’ and sent Christmas cards- it really meant a lot this year.

I’m actually a right miserable cow, I’m expecting my Oscar any day now

Cherryberrypies · 13/02/2021 23:25

I was having an awful day, I’d bombed an interview, spilled an iced coffee all over myself and my window wipers had somehow flew off when I was driving in torrential rain on the motorway and I was now stuck at a service station hours away from home with no way to get home because I had no window wipers and it was raining. I was just sat in my car crying.

A man had heard me asking if they sold window wipers in the shop inside and must have taken pity. He came over to the car and gave me one of his wipers and attached it to the position in front of the drivers seat. He stuck the other wiper up so it wouldn’t scrap the window and told me I would be able to get home with that.

It’s a bittersweet memory for me as I was sat in the car in my knickers, as I’d taken my soaked trousers off. Don’t think he knew what to think ha. I think about him often he told me I was around the same age as his daughter and he hoped someone would have helped her out the same way.

I fell in the canal when I was a toddler, mum couldn't swim & had my brother she was trying to reach me but couldn't. Two passers by got me out.

idontlikealdi · 13/02/2021 23:29

I got on the bus with baby twins which is a nightmare in itself round here, it was pouring with rain. They had just switched to oyster / contactless only and I hadn't realised. I was at the end of my rope when the bus driver told me to get off. A wonderful lady paid on her card and wouldn't accept my cash. I will never forget it.

SaltyTootsieToes · 13/02/2021 23:30

I have a few, which is why I try to help any time if I can.

The one I always think of is this. Many years ago (late 1980s), before mobile phones, before there being a lot of ATMs and no satnav. I was driving home in the dark from visiting long distance boyfriend. It started snowing very heavily and visibility was very poor. I took a wrong turn. Ended up god knows where and driving far longer than I should have been (hours) so fuel started getting low. I had very little cash and no atms anywhere.

I stopped at a petrol station, crying I was so scared, lost, and worried. The guy at the station was lovely. Gave me a map and wrote out the route back plus put some petrol in my car. Didn’t charge me nor would he accept me sending money to him.

whatsnewpussycat777 · 13/02/2021 23:30

That was so kind bless her

A chap I know from school who runs a car polishing business came and polished out some scratches on the side of my new car and didn't want paying for it. Not a stranger but not a friend. How lovely was he. - I only asked him in passing to recommend a product for me.

The police took me home one night from the station when I got off the train a little worse for wear. (I was mortified.....but actually they were just being lovely).

SingingWaffleDoggy · 13/02/2021 23:35

Had my nieces and nephew in the car with my baby DD, nephew (7) had been carsick everywhere. He’s covered, the car is covered, the others are wretching. I pull into Tesco car park and take everyone out of the car. Can’t take the vomit covered child in, too young to leave them at the car, baby getting grouchy and wanting a feed. Lovely lady saw me struggling, went in and bought several large bottles of water, anti bac wipes, kitchen towel and plastic bags and even offered to clean up the vom while I breastfed baby!

BenoneBeauty · 13/02/2021 23:36

In my early 20s (early 2000s) and on a night out in a new city and got separated from my friend who had my wallet. I was visibly drunk (staggering everywhere) when a couple stopped me and asked if I was ok. I was crying and told them I'd lost my friend and had no money. They asked me if I knew where I was staying (which I did) - they then proceeded to hail a black cab, told the taxi driver they were off duty police officers and had his registration so he needed to ensure I got home ok and gave me £20 for the fare!

I've never forgotten it as they were so kind and didn't want anything from me, just to make sure I was ok. I actually think of them often & would love to pay them back so I do always try to pay it forward when I can.

People really are lovely, it's just the shit ones that make the news and make things seem hopeless at times.
