Anyone have real nostalgia for 90s/early 00s sitcoms?

I'm talking the channel 4 (now I think 5?) things. Friends, Frasier, Everybody loves Raymond, King of Queens, will and grace. I know I know, so much of it has dated and I really roll my eyes at certain episodes but I also love the simplicity of life, hos it was family friendly and funny without constant weird sex scenes or black mirror type storylines. Plus the fact everyone would watch it at the same time.

What is the version of these types of shows these days? Maybe I'm also nostalgic for pre-Trump, pre-covid America and generally being young. 😂

Frasier is still amazing. I always feel very clever when I get one of the more subtle jokes!

ParadiseLaundry · 13/02/2021 20:48

Yes! A few years ago Pre kids I stuck an episode of Frasier on when DH and I were hungover and he loved it, so we recorded them all on C4 and watched them all. Our wedding vows were basically copied from Daphne and Niles wedding vows Grin also adored Will and Grace, much funnier and sharper than Friends IMO and Eric McCormack is 😍

The closest thing I've found nowadays is The Good Place.

Candleabra · 13/02/2021 20:49

@Gormless

I adored Roseanne in the early 90s
Me too. You never see it repeated anywhere. (Admittedly I haven't looked that hard, but it's not "everywhere" in the way that Frasier, friends etc are)

I like frasier, but it's just a bit sleazy sometimes. Well tbh most sitcoms are very geared towards getting sex, once you see it, it's a bit dull.

ParadiseLaundry · 13/02/2021 20:50

Caroline in the City was amazing! I loved that her cat was called Salty, best name ever! I loved Ellen too and Cybill. I really wish a streaming service would show them!

@ipswichwitch

Yes but..but...flour baby! Or the ski lodge... “I’m not gay Guy!”
Stop chasing these lesbians! 😂
Ironfloor269 · 13/02/2021 20:51

King of Queens was the best sitcom ever. No other series come close, the dynamic between the characters is amazing.

AIMD · 13/02/2021 20:52

I’m currently watching Gilmore girls.....I didn’t even watch it the first time round. I like the cheesy nature of it.

JanuaryJonez · 13/02/2021 20:56

Frasier is probably my favourite series ever.

It's strange as I was the same age as the Friends characters when it started, so I should have identified with it a lot more, but I just found them a bit irritating.

I laughed at Friends but laughed with Frasier, and I identified a lot more with him than Rachel, Monica or Phoebe!

73kittycat73 · 13/02/2021 21:00

I got South Park (Not family friendly! Wink Grin ) seasons 1-16 for Christmas. I saw a few episodes on Comedy Central pre Christmas and felt that tug of nostalgia.

ParadiseLaundry · 13/02/2021 21:02

That Ski Lodge episode of Frasier was one of my favourites! I told DH about it from when we first started out watching them and we made an occasion of watching it. Also loved Boo where Frasier dresses up as a clown and gives Marty a heart attack!

FanOfTheCheese · 13/02/2021 21:02

Love king of queens probably my favourite American sitcom

SickoftheCword · 13/02/2021 21:03

Ahh, I loved Roseanne! I remember Friday nights as a pre-teen/early teen watching it with my mum 🥰that followed by Cheers and Golden girls. Later on it was Friends, the SATC.
I loved The wonder years on a Sunday afternoon/evening too, the whole family sat round to watch it.
Up until Dd was born a few years ado, we always watched Frasier and Everybody loved Raymond on a hungover Sunday morning. Now it’s bloody Milkshake or CBeebies!

SickoftheCword · 13/02/2021 21:03

*Then SATC

Ironfloor269 · 13/02/2021 21:04

I'm binge watching Gilmore Girls for the 4th time now. I find it to be really funny in a more wholesome way...

Maireas · 13/02/2021 21:11

I loved Grace Under Fire and Dharma and Greg. Also Caroline in the City. The first Spin City with Michael J Fox.
My favourite is Frasier.

Mammyloveswine · 13/02/2021 21:11

I can remember going to our neighbours to watch friends!

Maireas · 13/02/2021 21:12

I wish they'd show Ellen again, that was funny.

How could I have forgotten Roseanne! Used to love that show. And Ellen. And of course SATC (Didn't realise that was 90s'!) I always used to feel sorry for the lead boy in The Wonder Years. His dad was always really horrible to him. Sad
GingerBeverage · 13/02/2021 21:34

@BingBongToTheMoon

I loved The Nanny.
Best theme tune ever.
Lelophants · 14/02/2021 07:30

It's not even how good they are, it's more just having them on. Raymond has never been funny imo and he is such a sexist, lazy character. But somehow I find it a comfort to have on in the background.

Ok the good place maybe? Is there anything else that meets that family friendly on in the background criteria?

Seinfeld and Frasier my absolute favourites.

Niles’ put down to Frasier: “Copernicus called... you’re not the centre of the universe!”Grin

I have the Frasier Xmas DVD - all their Xmas episodes which I watch every year.

Maireas · 14/02/2021 07:49

I loved Frasier's dad's rather extrovert girlfriend, Sherry.
Sherry : "I always say laughter is the best medicine!"
Niles : "We must be in the placebo group"

DragonflyInn · 14/02/2021 08:11

I’d say Modern Family fits the bill. Very funny actually, and yes to family friendly.
