Angry cat hates the dog, and won't let him within a metre of him, he's always telling him off in a really grating whiney miaow. Just now I threw the dogs ball and it rolled under misery's chair. He just pranced around the chair (he stands on his back legs and waves his arms in the air Grin) because he's wary of approaching angry cat, eventually making a quick grab for it. He's such a prick sometimes, but I love him so much.

The other cat loves the dog and will weave around him purring and headbutting until he gets his ears washed with a look of bliss on his face. He does play head games with the dog though - like stealing his bed and sitting next to his food bowl (makes dog anxious). He also paws at the kitchen floor passive-aggressively every time dog comes in from a wee.

Is anyone else fascinated by the way their pets interact?

Yes me!

Two cats.
One plays with him to a point then gets huffy and runs away.

One hates him and growls
At him if he even thinks about playing.

They won't cuddle (the two cats do) but will both sit on my lap.

PugInTheHouse · 13/02/2021 20:44

2 cats, really not keen on the dog. He tries to chase them and they run away. They are starting to get closer to him if I am holding him Its still early days so I am hoping it gets better.

sproutsnbacon · 13/02/2021 20:49

2 dogs father and son (we did not breed them) and a cat. Cat and father dog love each other, lots of sniffing and head butting
Son dog chases cat. Cat swipes at him whilst laying on the table.
Neither dog was used to cats before they arrived.

Sideorderofchips · 13/02/2021 20:54

Yes two cats. Sometimes they go nose to nose and look like they are kissing. And est next to each other. Others they chase each other round the house

For the first six months I thought I'd made a big mistake and ruined the poor kittys lives, they barely came downstairs. Copious amounts of treats for all helped grease the wheels, so that they all have good associations with each other.

Uncle and niece labs, 1st labs sister had pups we got 1 of the pups.

They annoy the hell out of each other. 1 minute they are fighting each other, the next cuddling each other.

PugInTheHouse · 13/02/2021 22:31

Thanks OP, there's still hope then. Its been about 2.5 months, they will tolerate being in the room with him as they can get up high, they sleep on my bed and he's on the floor in the crate but that's as close as it gets right now. I worried about the exact same thing, they seem ok but I think they would prefer he wasn't here!

PugInTheHouse · 13/02/2021 22:33

Oh the cats are lovely together, snuggle up and sleep together most days. They do the play fighting thing also. They are from the same litter, they were the last 2 left so couldn't separate them.

CaffeineAndCrochet · 13/02/2021 23:02

They all tolerate each other to varying degrees. Dog knows not to approach the cats. When he forgets and gets too close, they hiss. They're comfortable in the same room as him but it's taken months. The cats pretty much ignore each other - even though they're from the same litter. Occasionally touch noses or have a sniff, and often chase each other around the house. None of the three would curl up together though - if the cats are on our laps, dog will go and lie in his bed in another room. One cat will start the night on the bed with us, the other will finish but it's rare they're there at the same time. Once they're not taking lumps out of each other, I don't mind though.

Mochatatts · 13/02/2021 23:18

We got a kitten after the dog. The cat still thinks it's a dog even after the dog passed away. He mopped about for a while. Got a second cat who's bonkers and picks fights with everyone, cats dogs people. She came from a single woman home so wasn't used to men or kids but settled in OK with time. Rehomed a female lab from a friend. Was quite young not getting enough exercise, not at all socialised, never lived with cats. She took 6mths of hard work to settle down. The first, original cat loved her. The second cat tolerated her. And the cats had a love hate relationship though would defend each other against neighbourhood cats. And they both brought me presents, never the exh who kept them.

MrsElijahMikaelson1 · 13/02/2021 23:25

Old lady lab-chilled and tolerant
Rescue tortoishell who hates the entire world apart from the old lady (who to be fair brought her up from 4 weeks old, so the sleep together etc)
8 month old cockapoo who is a complete and utter knob, who pisses the old lady and hateful cat off so much. God I adore her though 🤦🏼‍♀️

Mollymalone123 · 13/02/2021 23:29

Older dogs eat friend is the rabbit and younger dogs loves my daughter’s cats -both dogs, rabbit and chickens all get on well- this is more the breed of dog I have though as opposed to introducing them gradually- the older dogs regularly cleans the rabbit and when the chickens weren’t in ‘lockdown’ themselves- they would all mingle together 😂

Mollymalone123 · 13/02/2021 23:30

Best friend not eat friend 😂 that puts a whole new spin on things 😂

MysweetAudrina · 13/02/2021 23:39

All just about tolerate each other, especially if it means sitting on my bed. Mama and baby cat ( found in a box last year) never cuddle. Mama swipes baby if she comes near and baby bullies mama. Mama tolerates dog. Baby growls and swipes dog every time he passes. No one messed with big daddy cat. He is a bit broken but they all seem to give him his space. Dog spends his whole life trying to next to me and gets v sad when he hears me using my cat voice. Mama cat is a sweetheart but the only time she hops on my knee is when I am sitting on the en-suite toilet, probably because dog doesn't follow me in there

Fuckingcrustybread · 13/02/2021 23:43

My two girlies, same litter, with the young puppy. He's male, they accepted him into the family and looked out for him. He didn't return one night so they went out to find him, it was a big dark garden. We called and called him, I'll swear they looked at each other, shrugged and went off to bring him home.

I have 6 dogs and a very tolerant cat!

Some of my dogs are related, the rest are rescues. The rescued ones are all a bit wonky (missing limbs, torn ear, cigarette burns 😭) and they all get on so well. They just gather in random cuddle-puddles around the house, they seem to love each other equally.

The cat used to join in, but got a bit squashed a few times when one of the dogs flumped down on top of her by mistake.

I love how they all wash each other's face and ears. They're such a harmonious bunch and my pride and joy 🤗.

DramaAlpaca · 14/02/2021 00:15

We have two spaniels and a cat. The cat came first and is the boss, very much so. The dogs get on great together, though girl dog is older and definitely the boss. I like watching them clearly having dog conversations that humans can't read, it's all about body language. The cat loves winding himself in and out of the dogs' legs and rubbing noses with them. He's not averse to swiping them with a right hook if they wave their tails in his face or something, so generally they treat him with respect. Their interactions are very interesting to watch.

StillMedusa · 14/02/2021 01:05

I have :
One dog.
One permanent cat
One cat who moved 4 doors down because his sister hates him
One 'stray' cat currenty snoring on the sofa (he is a stray and having checked that we had him patched up when very ill, and neutered)

Perma cat.. tolerates dog after 18m.. goes nose to nose and lies side by side on the bed or floor but doesn't seek out dog
Ex cat.. ignores us all
Stray cat..bullies dog and likes to sit on me looking smug while dog is frantic with jealousy...dog likes to sniff him but is(rightly) wary as stray slaps!
Dog is a sappy sod who would like to lick and snuggle everyone... God I love her!

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 14/02/2021 01:20

Two dogs. They're not friends. Old dog is intimidated by younger dog, she's pushy and bossy and wants my attention when I'm trying to give him fuss. Younger dog does try sometimes to be friendly and play but older dog can't be arsed. They're not on each other's Christmas card lists.

Babyroobs · 14/02/2021 01:28

Two dogs, six years apart in age. Mostly get along but sometimes both want to be top dog and there's lots of attention seeking. Walks can be a problem, as younger dog wants to chase older one and whilst she goes along with it a bit, younger dog goes too far every time being too rough and it descends into teeth barring and them having to be separated.
They both sleep in bed with me and there's lots of competition seeing who can get closest to me and younger dog being possessive over his space right next to me and blocking older dog getting close ! all good fun at bedtime !

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 14/02/2021 01:50

We got 2 rescue cats who were apparently a "bonded pair" and had to be rehomed together. One is much more sociable and confident than the other. They actually seem to hate each other!

When the male one goes near the female one she's immediately on her guard, swiping at him to piss off. If he does manage to get close, he'll start by washing the top of her head which she tolerates, then ends up biting her neck, so I know why she objects!

They will butt each other out of the way for food (the small shy female definitely wears the trousers at dinner time!) and meow for each other when they come in from outside, but otherwise keep themselves to themselves most of the time.

I got a Feliway plug-in and the first night we used it I woke up and found them sleeping next to each other, one with her back leg over the other's neck! But ever since then, they just find their own space to sleep. Sad

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 14/02/2021 01:53

Oh your puppy pile Fuckingcrustybread - how lovely!

Weirdfan · 14/02/2021 02:08

2 dogs, 2 cats here, cat 1 is an old boy and was here first, he is the boss and the others all give him a wide berth, with good reason as he is vicious Grin Cat 2 is sweet with the dogs, headbutts them for fuss and likes an ear wash from either. She does have an issue with dog 1 who likes the same spot on the sofa as she does and will sniff, whisker-tickle and generally irritate dog 1 until he shifts from her spot. She has all of us (except cat 1 who likes no one) wrapped around her stripey paw though, she's a total sweetheart.

MouseholeCat · 14/02/2021 02:10

Two cats- they are only 6 months apart in age but we adopted them separately. They are pretty good with each other.

They play fight. For the most part, it's very evenly matched and they take turns. One gets a little more overinvested occasionally and will pin the other down which causes him to cry out. We intervene when that happens.

They often wash each other and we'll sometimes find them sleeping together. They both sleep between us at night but have specific realms of the bed that they each occupy.

They get fed at opposite ends of the house. This is mainly because the less dominant one eats and finishes quickly and will try and muscle the dominant cat away from his bowl. We didn't want either to get food aggression so we decided to separate them for feeding.

Animum2 · 14/02/2021 07:55

I got two kittens when I moved into my flat 20 years ago, they had the same father but came from mummy and daughter cats which were all together when born, the two of them basically ignored each other as they grew up, occasionally they will sleep next to each other but they liked their own space

More recently we had two guinea pigs (brothers) then we got a cat, the cat didn't realise they were their as the guinea pig cage was up high on a table but when he realised he would stalk past and hiss at them, when we got the piggies out, cat had to go to another room
