Prize to me for my most boring MN post ever...but I want to buy new kitchen utensils...mine are ancient and were never that good...are there any brands or websites anyone would recommend?
I have a gas hob if that is relevant?
Thank you!

A scooper, A squasher, a turner-overer, a let-the-water-outer, and a cheese torturer. They're the essentials.

Tongs. Just love them.

fabricstash · 13/02/2021 19:41

My Silicon coated tongs. Amazing and had them for years and even take them on holiday. Also prop kitchen scissors you can take apart to properly clean and sharpen. Good for cutting everything from pizza to cheese or meat

IKEA silicone spatula. Use it all the time. By far the most used thing in our kitchen and it cost £1.25 I think.
Use it for stirring, lifting, dishing up, and getting every last bit of sauce/ curry out of the pan. Really couldn't cook without it.

HoneysuckIejasmine · 13/02/2021 19:46

Silicon spatula. I hate it when it's dirty and I have to use the plastic one. Useless.

I agree, TONGS!!! I have mini ones about 20cm long, but the usual longer sized also. Great for turning meat, chops and things on the grill. Mine have silicone tips so they dont scratch non-stick cook ware.

Oxo do an amazing peeler with a thick handle which I love. I won't use any other peeler now.

If you bake pastry, a silicone brush is handy to paint on egg yolks or oil/melted butter.

An electric can opener I bought years ago is fab. It was likely from asda, tesco or argos and didnt cost alot, but still going strong. I can't stand regular, handheld types anymore.

A turkey baster for regular meat basting, but it also allows you to suck up the meat juices at the bottom of the pain, without getting the flating oil. Very handy for making gravy or adding to gavy mix.

Oxo good grippers veg peeler.
Silicone spatula.
Parmesan grater
Spaghetti spoon
Silicone pastry brush
Loads of wooden spoons.

Silicone tongs, silicone spatula and scraper set. Slotted spoon. Good sized fish slice, burger flipper etc. Meat forks.
These are the things that get used the most in our house (not counting the knives)

ToooOldForThis · 13/02/2021 21:05

Oooh thank you
So silicone is good? My stuff is so old there wasn't much of it about when I was last utensil shopping!
Oxo mentioned twice..any other brands I should look at?

when we were first married i would dash into John Lewis and get a utensil on pay day....they were various prices up to about £9....I still have them all, they are immaculate and not in the least bit damaged at all

dh was very sceptical about my spendthrift ways... "how much for a potato masher.....???" but I still have it!

i just had a quick look on the JL site and they all seem to be plasticy and metal now, mine are all stainless steel/metal and come up lovely in the dishwasher!
and the ladle, the spaghetti spoon the skimmer, the spider, the fish slice, three balloon whisks

ToooOldForThis · 14/02/2021 11:49

Ooh hadn't thought about washing...does silicone survive the dishwasher?

Honestly I prefer wooden utensils, good quality olive wood ones. I have a ladle, wooden spoon and a spatula. The spatula is my favourite, I’ve tried metal ones but they just scratch my good pans, and plastic always melts eventually.

ToooOldForThis · 14/02/2021 12:01

Oh thank you! Hadn't thought of that. My wooden spoons (admittedly old, cheap) tend to split..would better quality ones not do that?

I got three good wooden spoons when I got married 28 years ago still in good condition - don’t put them in the dishwasher and they won’t split.

Katie1784 · 14/02/2021 12:16

Microplane!

Thelnebriati · 14/02/2021 12:26

Beechwood chopping board, vegetable knife, bread knife and large knife. I like Salter knives, my bread knife is from the 1960's and was from my Great Aunt.
Pyrex or own brand casserole dishes in 3 sizes.
Decent enamel oven trays in a few sizes.

My mum still has my grandma's wooden spoon which has got smaller and smaller from all their stirring! It's one of those sentimental things that makes you feel close to her.
ToooOldForThis · 14/02/2021 18:55

Oooh I just googled microplane, def want one of them!
