16 month old spitting out water! Why?!

Secretlifeofme · 13/02/2021 13:32

My 16 month old has been drinking water from a munchkin cup for ages now... maybe since she was about 9 months? Anyway for the past two months or so, she will ask for water, then take some in her mouth and spit it out or let it dribble down her chin on purpose Hmm. It's not an issue with being able to use the cup, because she has always used it fine before. Plus she doesn't spit every time - maybe every other time she takes a drink. It's really annoying because she makes her front all wet and in this cold weather I have to keep changing her clothes!

Any advice on why she might be doing this and how we can get her to stop? We have tried taking the water away when she does it, saying no, ignoring.. Nothing seems to work!

My DS goes through phases of doing this. Think it's such a stage tbh. He seems to think it's funny and a bit ' naughty'. I just say that drinks are for drinking and if he does it again then it will go away. Which it does. Bloody kids eh!

MsOgyny · 13/02/2021 13:34

Mine did this. He just found it funny. None of my others went through the phase. He grew out of it pretty quickly, but I agree, annoying as hell whilst it's happening!

She learnt a new trick and finds it fun/amusing. Maybe you can encourage her to play around like this in the sink or bath but not at mealtimes.

For fun probably.

JuniLoolaPalooza · 13/02/2021 13:40

Sensory stuff, it's a great feeling for a kid. I'd just ignore it, or put a bib on her.

grey12 · 13/02/2021 13:44

A very annoying phase..... just breathe and ignore

snowblower · 13/02/2021 13:50

Because it's fun and she enjoys your reaction?. She's entertaining you.

LordOfTheOnionRings · 13/02/2021 13:52

My son is 13 months and does this, he finds it hilarious. it's annoying but he is having fun so 🤷‍♀️

Ejb86 · 13/02/2021 13:53

Because she's realise she can!

pootleplumtrinket · 13/02/2021 14:20

Agree with the others, fun and experiment

Ornamentalcabbages · 13/02/2021 14:31

Ours did this phase. I just calmly said no, and took the cup away, but otherwise didn't make a big deal about it as they found it funny. Lasted about 1-2w before they got bored

myopinioatters · 13/02/2021 15:18

Agree. This was a stage for mine. She found it hilarious. Not so much for me. I just tried not to laugh and explained that out dog doesn't like it and is sad when she does it. It helped, but might not for you.

NoJetter · 13/02/2021 15:28

Argh my ds1 did this for a few months. I made the mistake of laughing ONCE then he did it every single time he had a drink and needed so many tops changed. Nightmare. He stopped after a few months though.

Jigglyjugs · 13/02/2021 15:34

Yes just a stage. Although DS 2 has been doing it on and off for a year, and has now progressed to taking large mouthfuls, spitting it into a different container and then drinking it whilst saying 'mmmmm' and and smacking his lips afterwards.HmmEnvy I remove the drink when he does, so now he tries to run off and hide so I can't spoil his game.

ItsTheDramaMickILoveIt · 13/02/2021 15:36

My DD did this. Super annoying as they soak their clothes. She found water fascinating generally (older DC hadn’t been interested at all really) so it seemed part of that.

BertieBotts · 13/02/2021 15:39

V common/annoying phase! Don't react to it and just take the water away. He will get bored with it eventually. Restrict access to water except when he seems actually thirsty.

We encouraged water play in the bath and then tried to remind them at other times that it's for the bath, which seemed to help.
