Can't understand this about Bridgerton (SPOILERS)

I've enjoyed Bridgerton for the light hearted nonsense it is. The thing I can't understand is how come the brothers who fiercely protect their sister's honour are so willing to f**k an opera singer or the modiste. I know society had double standards but I would have thought a gentleman who regarded his sister as a lady would not be using other women for his own pleasure??

I think the whole of the history of the human race shows that many men are quite happy to use women for their pleasure whilst outwardly presenting as 'respectable'.

I would find it more unusual if men in positions of power and privilege didn't have double standards with regards to women in their family and other women.

And of course the fact it's not real Smile Enjoyed it a lot myself and am hoping for a second series.

Also, much much more impact on the whole family's standing in society and the other sisters' ability to marry if it's a woman's honour that is tainted. Not so much if it gets out that a male has been shagging around - the woman would most probably be blamed then too.

The sisters and the families they associate with are all aristocracy/the upper class.

The modiste and the opera singer are of a lower class.

Isn’t more because the sisters behaviour would impact the families place in society rather than protecting her whereas men were allowed to sow their seed 😉

There are indeed double standards in play in society. Plenty of examples, a casual glance at any tabloid will provide lots of examples right up to date.

As Po have said, their sister’s honour impacts on the whole family’s fortunes, but it’s about more than family, class and social position is important. The opera singer and modiste are of a lower social class/standing than the aristocrats - upper-class men would treat them very differently than they would women of their own class. Compromising the honour of a potential lady/duchess is serious enough to duel over, compromise the honour of a working woman, nobody cares.

There are millions if not billions of men in the world living according to this double standard today!
A families honour is kept by the women's virtue and the man's conduct.
So in Bridgerton world, it's fine for a man to fuck whoever he wants. But not fine to shirk his responsibilities, cheat at gambling, renege on a debt etc
That's why the rumour about Berbrooke having fathered a child he wasn't supporting was so damaging to him. It wasn't shagging the servant that was the problem, it was shirking responsibility for the child.
