Breast Screening Recall - common?

52andblue · 12/02/2021 13:09

I had a breast screening 2 weeks ago.
Explained self checking hard as I've always had really lumpy breasts. Wasn't aware of any change except recent pain in right breast and tiny unchanged dimple which was there at last, (1st) screening 3 yrs ago.
The nurse who did it told me I'd have to travel for a further screening, 'possibly'. I did wonder if she meant she'd seen something, or was just giving me a heads up to be prepared (it's an 80mile trip, we're v rural).
Today I've had a letter saying: 'unclear, please attend for further tests, could take between 1 and 3 hours depending on nature of test'.

I am grateful to be checked, and double checked, esp in current circs.
Would the letter say if something had shown up anyway at this stage or would it just say 'unclear', as it does?

I was recalled before Christmas, my friend in January.

In her case it was literally unclear, a part they couldn’t seem all clear.

For me they spotted something, but further tests showed it was benign calcification. All clear.

I know lots of people who are recalled, try not to worry.

Ah, thanks @CormoranStrike!

I nearly put a 2nd post up immediately after the 1st saying: 'I don't know why I posted this: there is nothing a stranger will be able to tell me, that's just daft' & try to work out how to remove my original post.

I've made a cup of tea. Doing this I've been thinking about my 2 friends, S and C, who both died within 6 months of each other of b/c over the last 3 years. 1 was 32 and died within a year of dx. 1 was 38 and died within 8 weeks. They left 7 lovely kids between them (both had divorced their hopeless husbands so they worried about them). Awful: not usual or inevitable outcome, but clearly lodged in my head.
So, I think I'm prob over-reacting to a perfectly standard letter!

(thank you for your reply and sorry for being a bit of a drama llama)

You're not a drama llama. It's worrying to be recalled, I know. I was recalled last year and after intensive tests I finally got the all-clear - benign calcification. I was terrified but the staff there were very understanding and calm. Don't google.

@52andblue don’t you mind, I would be drama llama with those stories in your past

Best of luck with it - and it is sometimes easier to write on a forum than talk to those around us.

I remember your user name, probably cos it aptly names me! We must have chatted before.

@CormoranStrike
@BerniesMittens

Just to say I attended yesterday and all is well. Thank you.x

(interestingly it seems my scans were clear but the nurse had noted a 'dimple' - at the specialist clinic they said a skin blemish not a dimple and that they've had an increase in women reporting chest /rib pain rather than true breast pain over last 12m and clinic nurse was very interested to know if I'd had Covid and considered i might have that as a long covid symptom. I said I had not had a positive test but had noticed more chest pain since a very rough 4 days last spring when I became much more aware of my breathing, which I still am, but didn't test then as not easily available and also it was not a symptom then (only new continuous cough / temperature at the time)

Oh I am so please for you Op.

BerniesMittens · 19/02/2021 17:37

@52andblue I'm so glad for you xx

52andblue · 19/02/2021 18:38

Tahnk you both.
I have a lot on my plate atm and it would be '1 more thing'
(I'm a single parent to 2 kids with Autism so the thought of anything 'serious' is terrifying. I am very grateful to the NHS to be properly checked, especially right now. I've just been offered my 1st Covid jab next month (I have Sleeep apnea and use a CPAP at night so maybe that's why) so that is GREAT. (I am not thinking about the landlord who has just increased my rent and probs with bills - that will work out in time, or not).
Thank you again for your kind words the other day when I was so rattled! xxx

Glad all was well!

Just a tiny matter- it wasn't a nurse who did your mammogram, it was a radiographer. Sorry to be pedantic!

I got a recall, too, but I know I'm prone to fibroadenomas, and they'd found another one, which they ( a radiologist) did a biopsy on.

All clear.

BunnyRuddington · 19/02/2021 18:51

I was called back last year as it was unclear. Went back for a further mammogram. They were very thorough and gave me the all clear.

I have lumpy breasts too.

Sodgex · 22/01/2022 20:01
