Where to live in the North East?

Levirandal · 11/02/2021 19:45

Having holidayed in the North East we really love it there. Typically we go to Northumberland. We also like Yorkshire.

We’d like to go somewhere friendly where there’s a bit going on so not very rural. Easy access to the coast would be fab though. Amenities would be nice and decent schools.

Wher will you be working?

Levirandal · 11/02/2021 19:51

Dh works in finance and me in admin so he’d be flexible on where he worked.

Whitley bay

tanguero · 11/02/2021 19:56

Morpeth, Hexham, and Berwick upon Tweed are all lovely historic market towns.

Redannie118 · 11/02/2021 19:58

Morpeth or Tynemouth. Lots to do, great transport links and both have good schools.

mnahmnah · 11/02/2021 20:00

Yarm or Northallerton

Okokokbear · 11/02/2021 20:09

Also it depends on budget. The North East is cheaper than London for example but not everywhere is cheap.

triplettrouble · 11/02/2021 20:12

Yarm, Durham, Morpeth?

Levirandal · 11/02/2021 20:13

Budget for houses would be up to 500K. Not a London budget by any stretch though we’re South East.

Tynemouth for the coast. Hexham for an inland market town, Allendale if you fancy a village.
Bamburgh is gorgeous, but Warkworth area might get you more for your money.

Summerhillsquare · 11/02/2021 20:22

I hear Barnard Castle is very fashionable these days 😜

Vinorosso74 · 11/02/2021 20:24

Whitley Bay or Tynemouth for coast and schools. Morpeth is more inland but still close to coast, a good town centre and schools.
All have good access to Newcastle city centre although Whitley Bay and Tynemouth are better with the metro.

MsSquiz · 11/02/2021 20:26

Coastal areas like Whitley bay, Tynemouth & Cullercoats are lovely and have metro stops so easy access to Newcastle city centre.

Jesmond and Gosforth are walking distance to the city centre, but also have metro stops to visit coast

Slightly further is Ponteland which is close to the airport and is a pretty village, on the border of Newcastle and Northumberland.

£500k house budget - how many bedrooms, what's essential?

I live here so happy to answer any questions Smile

Sidewalksue · 11/02/2021 20:28

I’d agree with places like Tynemouth. It means kids have easy access to a city when they are teenagers and older.

alloutofcareunits · 11/02/2021 20:30

Cleadon and East Boldon are only a couple of miles from the beach and less than 30 min drive into Newcastle. Bars and a few cafes and restaurants as well as being on the metro line

BikeRunSki · 11/02/2021 20:30

Whitley Bay is on the coast, easy access to Newcastle for city stuff. Metro station. Middle school system. Easy access to Northumberland countryside.

Levirandal · 11/02/2021 20:54

@MsSquiz, I’m very jealous as we love the North east. Ideally four bed. We’d like to be within reach of Newcastle but would like to be close to the coast and nature. We’ve stayed in Amble and Warkworth before when we’ve come up and we really love them both. But wonder if we’re missing some gems as we only holiday there but it’s obviously a bit different if you’re looking for somewhere to live.

Does he need to get a job? Do you?

That would be the limiting factor. How much do you want to earn?

Okokokbear · 11/02/2021 21:17

Yeah I think whether you need to get a job matters. Also how old are your kids?

The birth tyneside coast is popular for families. So Cullercoats, whitley Bay, tynemouth. One thing I'd say is its bloody windy up here so the coast isn't always pleasant!

So from there you are close to Newcastle, the traffic used to be quite bad as loads of people commute. The metro is also busy. You'd also be in good reach of places like cobalt buisness Park or the government building in Longbenton. Thinking about places you might end up working.

High Heaton, Heaton, Gosforth and benton are nice enough too. And close to Newcastle and the coast.

Some bits of south Northumberland are popular with families too. For example Cramlington it Morpeth or some villages like Seaton delavil. Not too far from some of the costal areas I mentioned. A little further out of Newcastle but still accessible.

MsSquiz · 11/02/2021 21:49

Something like this is Gosforth is close to the high street, technically walking distance to the city centre but also has good bus & metro links.
While the gardens in Gosforth don't tend to be huge, there are parks and the town moor walking distance too

This one in Jesmond has no garden, but Jesmond has lots of green areas as well as cafes, bars and restaurants. Jesmond is very studenty though...

This Ponteland one has a decent garden, walking distance to the village centre, 2 small supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. Ponteland's nearest metro stop is the airport and a pain to walk to, and the buses are only twice an hour into the city centre.

All of the above areas have decent schools

I'd look at Northumberland proper rather than Newcastle or North Tyneside. Morpeth, Stannington, Hexham maybe? Love the areas suggested earlier (Tynemouth, Whitley Bay) but it can be windy and it gets incredibly busy. They're also property hotspots at the moment.
