As the title says really 😆 DH announced today that when he was at uni he bought 20 Bitcoin for ‘about 20 quid’ but isn’t sure how to access them. We’ve just looked and each coin is worth $34k 😡😡🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️ What a plonker!! Any ideas? Or do we have to accept it’s lost.

You need the keys to access the account they were credited to.

No keys. No cash.

Would they have been emailed? He’s got an idea of a couple of emails.

Not unless he emailed them to himself. There are lots of similar stories online where people have forgotten their details and lost a lot of money - unfortunately it's the flip side of the amount of security in cryptocurrency! Best of luck.

Old flash drives? Worth a look.

I have no idea.

You would have needed to create a cryptographic key that identified your account on the blockchain, and that protected the account that received the BTC after purchasing them. How that was done depends on how you set everything up in the first place.

After purchase, you could have transferred the BTC to a wallet, which would be an offline file - again secured with the cryptographic key that identifies the account to the blockchain. In which case you would need to have that file and the key.

If you didn't transfer them to a wallet, then they could still be accessible with the email and key that was used to purchase them.

If you haven't got the key, you can kiss goodbye to them in this life, I'm afraid.

Dammit. Honestly, if you knew the guy he’s never like this!! The one time he does something like this it’s bloody important 😂 Good job I’ve got a sense of humour. I’ll mention about the flash drives. Luckily he’s got a first class IT degree so he’s quite savvy. It’s not over yet 😂

... while the possibilities of digitally generated currencies have yet to be explored in any serious sense, the importance of the blockchain, and digital cryptographic good practise cannot be overstated when engaging with the distributed ledger system ...

Omg I hope you find it.. fingers crossed. Does he remeber what site or where he bought them?

Swordfish1 · 17/03/2021 15:32

Fingers crossed you find how to access them.

Usually he would have signed up to a crypto account most likely, so if he can remember the name of that, or have any emails from any that would be a start.

Then its a case of knowing your username (usually an email address) and the password. If he can't remember the password there is no chance of getting it reset unfortunately. So hopefully he'll remember any possible passwords he might have used back then.

Some common crypto platforms for purchasing bitcoin are: Blockchain, Bitstamp, Github, Kraken, eToro but theres loads. Do a google search and see if any match any emails in his account.

If he has 20 full bitcoin. That's going to be worth around 780 thousand pounds today!

of course withdrawing it to cash is a whole other ballache.
