Is Windermere a nice place for a holiday?

Just that really. Always wanted to go to the Lake District and wondered if the village of Windermere itself was a good place to stay

Thank you

I’d go further north to Keswick. So much nicer.

Bunnybigears · 10/02/2021 18:27

If you go in school holidays it will be very busy, we went in July last year and you couldn't move in the town for people.

SweatyBetty20 · 10/02/2021 18:32

Windermere is really busy in the summer but not quite like Blackpool (although I do like an evening drive out there for fish and chips at Yorkshire Fisheries and a walk on the prom in the setting sun 😀). But it’s ice creams and boat trips mainly.

Grasmere is lovely - only small, but has shops and restaurants and is very central. Keswick is really nice, but bigger, especially the Keswickian chippy.

Keswick1967 · 10/02/2021 18:52

I think you should try Keswick, plenty to keep the kids occupied, good shops

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/02/2021 19:19

Laughing at Bowness being compared with Blackpool. OP, they are NOTHING like each other! Grin Yes, Bowness can be busy in the summer as it's the first place that many day trippers from Liverpool and Manchester go. Geordies tend to go to the N Lakes.

I would not go anywhere near Blackpool, it's not my kind of place at all. But I do enjoy the hustle and bustle of Bowness and it's where I would stay with children who got bored by too much peace and quiet. We go fairly often to the Lakes and always like to stay around Lake Windermere. We have stayed in various types of places both self-catering cottages and hotels over the years, basic and fancy, all round Windermere.

The last few years we've stayed at Waterhead (walking distance to Ambleside) in a couple of different hotels. It's less busy than Ambleside or Bowness so quiet at night but a bit of activity during the day with the boats coming in and out. We like the relaxing atmosphere there as opposed to Bowness. A couple of hotels and pubs (beer gardens overlooking the lake) and tourist shops. Kids are nerdy mid-late teens so we are not after wild nightlife. It depends what your kids are into. We like a good long walk and then a sit with a drink in a nice pub overlooking the lake (kids on phones usually ha ha while DH and I chat.)

You need to bear in mind what you want to do in wet weather, and what the kids will be happy with. We've had some nice holidays in picturesque cottages in decent weather but a couple of short breaks where it rained for 2 days solid and none of us fancied walking in torrential rain so we were stuck inside the cottage playing games really which we could have done mich cheaper at home"! So hotels are good if they have leisure facilities. Low Wood Bay has been all done up, expensive though.

There is something lovely about sitting watching the lake with a drink. Some of the hotels have lovely views from their windows while you sit and eat eg the Beech Hill hotel, which is near Newby Bridge. Lakeside hotel is in a good position and there is an aquarium and steam railway (Lakeside and Haverthwaite)

My kids remember the walks the most. We've been up Catbells when they were younger (near Keswick) and closer to Windermere we've done some lovely walks straight from Windermere Village and Bowness. We also enjoyed walks around Tarn Howes and Coniston, Easdale Tarn and Grasmere. Wray Castle is worth a visit as is Brockhole (good tree trekking place, crazy golf, canoeing etc).

DH and I have enjoyed Blackwells (Arts and Crafts house) and Townend National Trust cottage at Troutbeck. Not sure kids would be into those though. DH only just tolerated them. Grin

I love the Lakes, I feel at home there.

AuntyMabelandPippin · 10/02/2021 19:28

Windermere is a village, Bowness is the town that is always busy.

There are lots of places in the Lakes that aren't as busy, Coniston is glorious, Buttermere is sublime, and I absolutely adore the area around Hawkshead and Grasmere.

If you're going for somewhere with a bit of energy, Kendal, Bowness, Penrith and Keswick are probably your best shot. You could then drive to the other places for a wander.

I used to live there, and miss it. Luckily I've moved to the Highlands so still get mountains and lakes lochs.

GameSetMatch · 10/02/2021 19:32

Lake Windermere is just a lake not much else, Bowness is the village that is lovely with cottages and hotels. Beatrix potter museum and the pubs and restaurants.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/02/2021 19:44

Lake Windermere is just a lake not much else

Grin "Not much else". I'm guessing the Lake District isn't for you really.

I'm also guessing the OP is talking about Windemere the village as opposed to Windermere the Lake, when discussing best places to stay.

User45643 · 10/02/2021 19:44

Keswick is like the hiking capital and packed with things for older kids and a good option if it rains

  • crazy golf (my family tradition!)
  • theatre by the lake (saw a play about sheep!)
  • pencil museum (don't knock it!)
  • italian icecream
  • weekend market, good for leather, bags, tshirts, art, knick knacks, sheep related souvenirs (!)
  • clothes and book shops
  • cafes and restaurants
  • fish and chips
  • pies
  • walk up Latrigg (1 hour or so up, amazing views over Derwent Water)
  • boats on Derwent Water/walk down Friars Cragg

There used to be Cars of the Stars where they had the Delores from Back to the Future - not sure but think it closed or moved

There might be an old cinema in Keswick too.

User45643 · 10/02/2021 19:47

Oh something well worth a visit is Honister slate mine. They now have a Via Ferrata which was amazing!

User45643 · 10/02/2021 19:50

And Whinlatter Forest is amazing. Cat Bells is a great walk for kids, it has a false peak then a second peak.

dididodo · 10/02/2021 19:52

We have a second home/holiday home in grasmere... we love it there! I can't wait to get back up there!!

User45643 · 10/02/2021 19:53

And Lowther Castle has some crazy old adventure treehouse stuff!

CurlyhairedAssassin · 10/02/2021 20:02

Ah I'd forgotten we'd ever been to Cars of the Stars in Keswick! Grin Surreal and cheesy afternoon.......

I haven't been to Honister Slate Mine yet - that's on our "to do" list, along with the Via Ferrata.

How did you manage to get your holiday home, @dididodo? Was it before the local resident regulations came in?

flibbertygibb · 10/02/2021 20:07

Windermere is perfect if you have older teens. Ours are 15 and 13. We stay in a lovely house and they are free to wander to the shops etc. There are some great local restaurants and family friendly pubs.
Our favourite day is getting a boat out on the lake!

TeaPiglet · 10/02/2021 20:14

We've got a caravan booked for Haven Lakeland site which is Grange over sands. A bit further away but DH will be driving so can just pop to nearby attractions. Great for kids I personally love the model village and Beatrix Potter museum. Very cute and interesting too

MsSquiz · 10/02/2021 20:18

We used to stay in Bowness if we went for a weekend away, pre DD. I like the busyness of it and people watching. But we visited the Lake District in September last year and stayed near hawkshead, on the opposite side of Windermere to Bowness and just visited to take DD to the Beatrix potter museum and to see the swans by the lake and it was nice staying away from the busyness (especially at the time of lockdown easing)
There's so much to do in the Lake District and it's all so beautiful, you can stay in 1 place and visit other lakes and villages

dididodo · 10/02/2021 20:25

@CurlyhairedAssassin yes we've had it quite a while. We go up once or twice a month usually.

MrsAvocet · 10/02/2021 20:30

I agree *Curlyhaired Assassin". I've previously lived in Blackpool and am now not a million miles from Windermere and I wouldn't say they were very similar!
Well, they are both unashamedly touristy and popular with day trippers from the North West but other than that I don't think they have a vast amount in common. Windermere has got more popular with stag and hen parties in recent years I suppose, but I can't see there being many of those this year. Or the usual influx of Beatrix Potter fans from abroad come to that. There will be lots of families in the school holidays and couples out of season I would think.
I think people get a bit snobby about the Windermere area but it really does have plenty to offer. People come to the Lakes for different reasons. True, if you are after solitude and serious fell walking or climbing then there are other places that would suit you far better. But other people come for boat trips, ice cream, the Beatrix Potter attractions and so on and Bowness ticks those boxes very well. The steamboat museum is great, and Brockhole Visitor Centre and Wray Castle are also very good. Then you've got the steam railway at the bottom of the lake and the Lakeland Motor Museum at the end of the train line. A family could easily pass a few days very nicely in the immediate vicinity of the Lake.

peak2021 · 10/02/2021 21:23

Windermere one September when I went was lovely. Not sure about the height of summer, would be too busy for me.

Roystonv · 10/02/2021 22:21

Agree with Curly and Mrs, Bowness is on Lake Windermere and is touristy but nothing like Blackpool. Windermere is up the hill from Bowness and the lake so a bit quieter, Ambleside busy too. All pleasant but if you are the serious walking types maybe too busy for you. so quiePleasant place to stay if yo

Roystonv · 10/02/2021 22:23

Sorry posted in error, ignore after last full stop! We live 20 minutes away.

Ormally · 10/02/2021 22:48

I'd say lovely for a day trip or 2 but if you want more peace (as well as possibilities of popping out on foot), there are plenty of other places worth looking at. Sometimes - a lot of the holiday time really - traffic in the places you mention can be tedious, as can parking.

Grasmere is my favourite, I think, but seems to have a smaller selection of places to stay. Also liked Ullswater and Watermillock (not too bad for getting to other bits around the lake). Now spend a lot of time in Grange-Over-Sands instead of 'classic Lakeland' which is close to getting out to the Lakes but a nice place to be, as family have relocated there. Carnforth has one of the most impressive bookshops I know - now starting to realise how long since I've been back.

Norwayreally · 10/02/2021 22:58

Love the Lakes, very beautiful. The Beatrix Potter museum is great and there’s an amazing fish n chip place beside Lake Windermere.

We stay in St Bees, lovely beach.

NanuNanuM · 10/02/2021 22:59

Bowness is a good stay for a young family.
It's not Blackpool. The pavements are busy and the geese a nightmare. But you can find nice family friendly places to eat, go on a boat, run about in the park and there's some excellent shops in a toy shop and great ice cream shop.

But Keswick has the bestest crazy golf ever (and a good chippy) and good walks.
