Facebook raffle groups

Are these a thing now? I've been invited to one and basically the group owner has chosen a load of random things and you have to pay a few £ to be entered into a raffle to win the item (so each item has 10, 20 etc places for names). There are cash ones as well.

But for a £30 bottle of gin the total cost of all the raffle numbers adds up to over £50! Nice easy profit if you can get enough people to sign up I guess...just seems like a bit of a scam to me.

Bet they’ve not got a gambling licence Smile

BloodyDarrener · 10/02/2021 06:43

Report to Facebook. It's not allowed.

Kinsters · 10/02/2021 07:14

Ahh, wondered why I'd not come across anything like it before! I feel kinda bad for the guy. And I guess if people want to spend £1 on a raffle for some crisps...🤷🏼‍♀️

I've just seen one now. Tickets 1-80 at £10 a pop. I added up the prizes and it's maybe £100 worth. Possibly £150 if I'm really generous. That's a hell of a profit even if it is for sick kid's GoFundMe in the UK being treated by the nhs? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Im a member of a raffle scheme liked to one with a license. Its great! Raffles for cash, gin, vouchers for local shops etc. The money then go to local charities.

I won £200 a week before Christmas.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 10/02/2021 07:39

Usually linked to a dodgy MLM I find. Avoid.

Runawayrain · 10/02/2021 07:49

I posted about something like this yesterday. In the case I've seen it's part of a FB group which sells random personalised shite - must be a new hun thing and they should have a licence I believe (but won't have):

Not for charity as far as I can tell. Runawayrain it's not the stuff itself - more the raffle aspect. Not sure how they're the same?

Yes it’s a thing. I was added to one of these groups and the person kept tagging me(and everyone else they know) in every single raffle post. I ended up reporting them. Raffles are a thing at the moment.

M0mmyneedswine · 10/02/2021 08:05

I'm in one on fb but they make a maximum 10% per raffle from what I've seen

cautiouscovidity · 10/02/2021 08:06

They're 100% illegal. Report to Facebook and, if you're feeling particularly vigilant, your local council.

Runawayrain · 10/02/2021 08:07

@Kinsters The raffle I've seen is one post in the FB group she has set up to flog all manner of personalised crap.
The website I linked to sells the same aforesaid crap, I wasn't sure if it was an MLM.

Happierlife · 10/02/2021 08:15

They have been going on for years now - join a scam group to see how many people have been scammed by these raffles. They are illegal even though some of the admins on these groups think they are legal. I tried playing in one during the 1st lockdown due to boredom and realised people get reqlly bitchy when someone wins what they wanted. I stopped playing after a few weeks.

userintgerain · 10/02/2021 08:24

I was in one for toys, won in my first entrance and people were furious with me! Bundle of toys worth about £150 I got for £2. This was a shop doing it and only sold to the value of the prize.
