Savoury, filling snacks.

I have fallen into the trap of providing only sweet snacks for DS4 and it isn’t great.

He is gluten intolerant, I am happy to spend time making things, but my shopping is done to a tight budget.

Hit me with your favourite savoury snacks for those mid afternoon blood sugar drops! He’s usually ravenous at about 3pm and we usually eat at 6ish.

I got a few ideas from DDs nursery which include Cheese and crackers, houmous with cucumber and carrot sticks or pitta bread, crumpets, a little pot of cucumber, breadsticks, cheese, carrot sticks. I also looked at Asda’s online shopping sites and found a section of under 100 calorie snacks which were quite useful

Carrots with hummus (have the advantage of taking a while to eat)
Cheese and gf crackers
Hard boiled egg
Slice of fritata
Roasted chickpeas
Peanut butter on Rice cake.

If you can include protein it will help fill him up

Baby bels & cheese strings,

Rice cakes and hummus or cheese or peanut butter

Pitta bread or wraps with different fillings such as cheese, ham and salad or tuna Mayo. Or you can make pitta pizzas by putting tomato purée and grated cheese on one cut in half and grill.

Gluten free Crumpets with butter

Protein pancakes with bacon

Savoury cheese and ham muffins

Corn tortilla chips with dip

Popcorn

I'm gluten free, and have just snaffled a small packet of salty popcorn. Its super cheap to make in a saucepan though, and you can then seal it in individual bags or airtight small boxes so one lot could last for days.
Nairns GF cheese oatcakes are very tasty on their own, but GF crackers and a bit of peanut butter would keep me going for ages.
Make some cheese flapjack with GF oats
GF savoury mini muffins could be frozen and microwaved a couple at a time (loads of ideas on Pintrest)

I make egg muffins wrapped in ham for myself as a high protein low carb snack and they are yum. I don’t follow a particular recipe but there’s an example linked below. I also like putting a slice of wafer thin ham in each tin hole as a ‘liner’ and makes them really nice.

I was also going to suggest some sort of egg based snack to fill him up.

You can make egg bites or some sort of thin omelette cut into strips.

Cucumber sticks
Carrot sticks
Anything from bravefoods

Hazelnutlatteplease · 09/02/2021 16:23

Yy to rice cakes with peanut butter or marmite or flavoured
Savory popcorn

All such great ideas!! They all seem so obvious when you read them like that Blush

You know, reading them has also made me realise how limited his diet has become in the last year. He was an excellent eater as a baby and toddler then had a picky stage and then was getting ok again, but since lockdowns have entered his life he’s got less and less eager to eat a variety of food and it coincided with me using sweets as a way to make up for his shitty situation Blush

Cheese and spinach muffins - sugarandspicebakingdotcom.wordpress.com/2012/07/07/the-hummingbird-bakerys-spinach-and-cheese-muffins/

Though I leave out the onion, as don't like it.

CMOTDibbler · 09/02/2021 16:56

In case you hadn't heard, Cut Price Barrys have specialist GF food at really reduced prices - obviously it varies depending on what they get in, but you can get 60 little packets of GF crackers for £3 atm which is such a great saving

AlohaMolly · 09/02/2021 17:13

@CMOTDibbler I have NOT heard, that website is great, thank you!!

The price of GF stuff is prohibitive I find it quite upsetting actually. I’ve started using the Olio app to get a variety of bread products for DS as usually I just buy a loaf of bread and that’s it.

I saw it on Gluten Free Bargains on FB. Approved Food also has a GF section. Some people have lots of luck in Home Bargains finding GF stuff, but I never do.
Also, Asda have their GF basics (flour, pasta, bread) price matched to regular stuff - pasta is 45p a bag, or 3 for £1.20, 4 GF rolls for 96p, 1kg GF flour is 45p which makes life hugely cheaper

Fivemoreminutes1 · 09/02/2021 17:50

I get small half-tins of baked beans from Asda for 24p. They’re really filling on a slice of toast.
Marmite and cheese toastie
A mug of soup with a slice of bread to dip
Sausage and ketchup sandwich
Potato waffle (you can put them in the toaster) with grated cheese on top

I can’t believe I didn’t know this! I shop in Lidl who don’t have anything anymore, so would make a special trip to Tesco!

Falafel is a good savoury snack.
