Garden covered in cat sh*t! Repellent ideas that work, please!!

My garden seems to be a magnet for every fucking cat in the neighbourhood. I’ve two young kids and one has just trodden in a load. Worried they are going to actually get it on them one day. I clear it up if I see it but often it’s in the flower beds and camouflaged.

Anyone got effective methods/products that work? Cruelty free obviously.

Please help!

Absolute loads of white pepper. Worked for me. Makes them sneeze a lot and cat has not returned.

FoxyTheFox · 09/02/2021 08:52

I bought this:

www.amazon.co.uk/gp/aw/d/B004SGC75S?psc=1&ref=ppx_pop_mob_b_asin_title&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

And put it in the top corner of the garden, pointing back towards the house, so that it covers the whole garden. I also sprinkled around a load of rosemary oil (cats hate the smell) and so far its working although they've started shitting in the garden next door instead. I've recommended the repeller to her.

If it's in your flower beds put some chicken wire down they hate the feeling of it on their paws. I've used peppermint spray and I got some cat sensors too. Closed up every gap into my garden, upgraded the side gate etc. For years now I've had no cat shit in the back garden. I get the odd cat in there sometimes.

A dog

Readysetcake · 09/02/2021 09:18

I was wondering if gate upgrades would help. We have inherited iron ones and the cats use our garden as a through far as it’s so open to them.

I’ll try the oils etc suggested so far and hope they help. The chicken wire could be a good shout.

And I would love to get a dog! But can’t justify £3k for one. Can’t really rescue as we have young kids.

Thanks all.

The only thing that worked for us is the high pitched cat repellers. You need a few, put them at the entry points of the garden.

Every time you find a poo, clear it up immediately and then point one of the cat repellers at that spot so they get a fright when they come back to the same spot next time.

JemimaTiggywinkle · 09/02/2021 09:24

Another tip, if you have patches of bare soil in the flower beds, lay sticks on the ground to cover the bare soil... not fool proof but makes it less attractive

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 09/02/2021 10:43

We have a sonar cat sensor. Works on battery and solar power. It's been 100% effective for us. I think it was from Argos or wilkos.

Bearnecessity · 09/02/2021 11:41

Had to laugh at Jumpinthefire,I was thinking the same....all the cats in the area give our house a wide berth because of our jack Russell I suspect.

Tehmina23 · 09/02/2021 12:04

This was my repellent. Sadly she died in 2018. But she was so fierce no other cat would dare enter the garden!!
She never pooed outside herself, instead she used a litter tray.

As you can see she even had her own pet.

Lion Poo.

I was just going to suggest this. Every time I dig my flower beds over, I stick bits of broken garden cane, or lay thorny branches down, on the exposed earth. I'm not trying to hurt the cats, just make it a less appealing toilet area!

Silent Roar also works but it's a bit pricey, especially if you have to keep using it. If you know anyone with a dog, invite them round to play (and also wee!) in the garden.

Also, it is grim but you need to pick it up as frequently as you can as cats are creatures of habit and will keep coming back to the same place.

FoxyTheFox · 09/02/2021 12:57

If you know whose cat it is and you've got a bit of a thick skin, return the shit to them with a reminder that if you wanted to spend time cleaning up after a cat then you would buy a cat. Its amazing how quickly being handed a baggie of cat shit motivates cat owners to provide their pet with a litter tray!

Readysetcake · 09/02/2021 13:57

Haha @FoxyTheFox that made me laugh. I don’t think I’d have the guts even if I did know who’s cat it was.

I really resent that fact that I have to scan my garden cleaning it up when I don’t get any cuddles or cuteness for my trouble! Maybe this will be the leverage I need to finally persuade my DH to get a dog.

Thank you all the suggestions. @Tehmina23 you definitely win for cutest deterrent. So sorry she is no longer with you Flowers

I put cat fencing around my garden to keep my cat in. It had the advantage of keeping other people's cats out...

Tehmina23 · 09/02/2021 14:51

Thanks @Readysetcake

PaperMonster · 09/02/2021 15:17

Male human urine - but do it at this time of year, not in the summer.

Ludo19 · 09/02/2021 15:35

Citrus fruit peel. Cats absolutely hate citrus fruit. The only trouble with that is you have to put fresh stuff out every so often. I have my own cats who poo in their litter trays, they have an enclosed garden but my front garden is a magnet for the neighbourhood cats

Lampan · 09/02/2021 15:44

Are you me OP?
I have exactly the same problem. I was indifferent to cats before I moved here, now I can’t stand them. The love to shit in my garden and it’s absolutely disgusting. The precise reason I don’t have pets is that I don’t want to pick up shit all the time.
I have an ultrasonic repeller that is no use at all. Pepper helps but only until it washes away with the rain. Every time I think I’ve broken the cycle of them using my garden as a toilet it starts up again. It doesn’t help that my area seems to have as many cats as people.
