How much do new windows cost?

JorisBonson · 08/02/2021 12:17

Embarking on window shopping for the first time ever.

Need 3 double glazed casement windows and a new back door.

Has anyone had windows replaced recently and would be happy to let me know what they paid? Don't even know where to set a benchmark. Thanks MN!

I had 5 windows and a new front and back door at the end of 2019. Just basic white UPVC except the front door which is black composite. £3500. I live in a small terraced house so not massive windows.

TheWashingMachine · 08/02/2021 13:15

Casement are cheaper than sash. We got quoted 2k per sash window in London

myusernamewastakenbyme · 08/02/2021 13:24

Ive just had 3 windows replaced in white upvc with cottage bars...£1150 for cash.

This is great, thanks everyone. DH keeps throwing prices like £10k around and giving me a heart attack.

I’ve had 3 quotes recently - 9 windows and a back door, white upvc. Been quoted £12000, £6500 and £4000! So much difference in price, all window samples looked and felt the same, only difference was big company/smaller company/one man on his own window fitter.

Was this a local or nationwide company you used? We're in a small terrace too and this is more the budget I was thinking! Cheers.

The big companies are known to be hugely expensive (Everest, Safestyle etc) so the spread of prices quoted by 40something doesn't sound surprising.

The big company has a lot of TV advertising, salespeople, shareholder dividends and showrooms to pay for. They also attract the 'big name so must be better' customer, who won't bother to shop around or if they do, they'll still go with the big company because they like a household name - see also people who pay British Gas to fit a boiler for twice as much as anyone else.

The small company will have a showroom and maybe a limited sales force to cover, but nowhere near as the big company.

The one man on his own will probably just buy windows to order from a local company to fit.

You certainly could pay £10k for new uPVC windows and doors, but you don't need to.

I'd probably go with a small local company and see if they have any reviews and industry trade body membership to fall back on. Maybe get a few quotes to compare.

We had all our windows plus two sets of doors replaced before Xmas. This includes two large bay windows with sash windows and a small bay/French doors in the kitchen. Then 8 other windows and a back door.

All in it cost 13K. We went with a local company who have their own factory where they make all the windows.

Had two other quotes in excess of 20K from two other local firms.

It was well worth it as the existing windows were knackered. I found the guarantee in the paperwork for the house and they were installed in 1983!

anotherlongwalk · 08/02/2021 13:56

If going with a small company check that they will be fensa approved and make sure you get the certificates... when you come to move, you have to provide the certificates. If you don't have them then as the seller you'd have to pay an insurance to cover any future issues caused.

JorisBonson · 08/02/2021 13:56

Thanks @BarbaraofSeville 👍 would rather use a local company anyway. My first job when I was 15 was selling double glazing on the phone so I'm too well aware of how they work!

Thanks @anotherlongwalk, would never have known that!

I didn't realise until I sold a house last year and had to provide the fensa certificates because I'd had new windows 5 years ago... it was pure luck and down to my disorganisation that I found them in a drawer, because I would never have known I was supposed to keep them!!

JorisBonson · 08/02/2021 14:01

I don't even think we had them when we bought this - the glazing has blown in the bedroom and we're starting to see the effects. We knew we'd have to to this eventually, just don't want to get ripped off!

Just had quotes, 15 windows including a bay, plus French doors plus 2 side windows, and back door, £21K in UPVC or 28K in engineered timber. Both with 15 year guarantee from a local company . £35K from a larger company.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 08/02/2021 15:00

Dont worry too much about the Fensa certificate...you can pay an indemnity insurance its about £20 to £30.

StCharlotte · 08/02/2021 15:10

We had all ours done with Safestyle recently (and they were fine).

3 bed Victorian terrace, it came to about £6000.

Bay window
Two large front bedroom windows
One medium middle bedroom window
One large rear bedroom window
One large bathroom window
One large kitchen window

When we were looking for a new composite front door, the local firm (who we wanted to use) was over twice the price of a National company (who we did use).

WhatAreWordsWorth · 08/02/2021 15:10

I would shop around for someone local, and ask for a few recommendations. We have a guy local to us who used to work for one of the Big Names and now works for himself so his prices are really reasonable.

If you can get Fensa certification it’s ideal, but not a massive issue if you don’t. Loads of properties don’t have it for new windows and doors.

Whatpaint · 08/02/2021 15:24

We have just had quotes in for windows. Originally I emailed three local firms a picture of the one window we needed replacing, (Very standard in our village) and asked them to email a quote over. Quotes for the one large 8ft window ranged from £600 to £750 including VAT.

I asked if there was a discount for replacing three and the response varied. Some said no and one said yes a small discount.

In the end we have just agreed to replace 3 x 8ft windows plus 3 smaller windows (one a bathroom so etched) plus reglaze some French doors and repair another window for a total of £3,185. I should add that the extra work was us asking for it, not the window firm suggesting it.

We picked a small local family firm who have a good reputation and are FENSA registered. We are in the South but not London.

Whatpaint · 08/02/2021 15:24

Ours are standard white uPVC.

jollygreenpea · 08/02/2021 15:25

We had 3 small windows replaced, got quoted 8k from one of the big companies.
We went and bought the actual windows ourselves from the manufacture (fensa reg) for less that £300 and fitted them ourselves, which is surprisingly easy.

Snowsnowglorioussnow · 08/02/2021 15:58

be careful with safe style, neighbour used them and they tried to charge me double for what I know she had - they also did not stop harassing me when I chose not to use them after that and then sent a dodgy sales man round with really old fashioned windows - think retirement in eastbourne...

Then they insisted my husband had to be there for everything...

in the end we said - no , no no no no. the way they spoke to me generally was so pushy and disrespectful I really enjoyed saying no.

TheDoctorDances · 08/02/2021 16:05

£4.5k about a year ago. Midlands. 8 windows and 2 doors. UPVC, the windows weren’t fancy but I picked pretty doors.

Snowsnowglorioussnow · 08/02/2021 18:23

@jollygreenpea wow !!!!!

FraughtwithGin · 08/02/2021 18:42

2 Velux skylights last year, triple-glazed, cost about 5k.
Interestingly a quote from another company for a front door, another outside door and 4 windows, also all triple-glazed, came to around 7k.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/02/2021 18:55

We had issues with safestyle. They quoted £9k for 2 doors and 8 windows. And tried 'buy now or it will be twice the price if you don't agree today'. They came down in price then on the day a bit and DH thought it a good deal so we agreed and then decided it was too expensive and cancelled the very next day - then had many many phone calls (blocked number) on my phone daily for a week until I emailed the company to tell them I suspected it was their salesman - magically they stopped the next day.

A local company then fitted brilliant quality doors and windows for £5.5k.
