Life Coaches....are they the new MLM?

MaidofKent78 · 08/02/2021 09:40

There seems to be a proliferation of new life coaches springing up, with little in the way of training, qualifications or experience, spouting all sorts of motivational memes and quotes and 'DM me to find out more' or 'earn 10k in 3 months'. sort of language I'd expect from a MLMbot.

Where are they coming from? How are they making their money? Is this another example of MLM type set ups?

Don't get me wrong, a well-qualified life coach can be a really powerful tool, but this doesn't look like anything like that.

Yeah I've seen this and had some reach out to me for an opportunity I can't miss, unlock my untapped potential.... Instahuns setting up as life coaches based on zero experience and no actual qualifications ? No thanks! Sort out your own life before charging to "fix" mine

I went to the States in the late 90's to do a Life Coaching course with the founder of Life Coaching, as I thought it was the perfect addition to my practice as a Mental Health Nurse here in the Uk .
Unfortunately it quickly became a fad along with Nlp and lots of people, mostly sales trainers orientated, set up Life Coaching companies offering worthless qualifications at high cost ( so not worthless to the companies lol) ..it was like the Klondyke ..the people who made money from life coaching were the ones selling the courses ..
There has been a glut of life coaches for years and it attracts many people who have more than a few problems themselves which they haven't acknowledged , and with no supervision or oversight it can be open to abuse .
I still feel Life Coaching as a concept has a lot to offer, but those signing up to become coaches need to ask themselves a few questions , such as "would I pay for me ?"..not easy to make a living from it .

My DH's ex has recently become one and the reality is that she is mentally unstable and an expert in nothing with absolutely no qualifications to her name other than one of the online things mentioned above that she's done. She's got a lot of issues and has used it as a platform to whinge about DH including things like our children and the fact he left her. She's totally unprofessional, self centred, and everything she has written or produced is public on the internet which DSC have seen and been hurt and confused by yet she doesn't care as long as she's getting the attention and the "likes" on Instagram bitching and whining about their dad.
She also thinks she's worth a grand for a block of her "sessions". I actually feel really sorry for her because she's made herself look really silly and not made any money to counteract that.

I did a coaching programme through work about 10 years ago and I really enjoyed it, to the point where I did think about pursuing it professionally.

I realised that:

  • whist it can help with clarity of thinking, it is ultimately for the coachee to take that leap into action.
  • I don't know many people who can afford to or would pay for private coaching, particularly as it isn't always tangible in terms of what you get out of it.

If someone had so failed-at-life that they had resorted to life coaching as a career then I wouldn't be able to take a word they said seriously.

Saggingninja · 14/03/2021 03:09

I'm glad you brought this up because I think they're everywhere. All over Facebook, these 'transformational' and 'intuitive coaches' ie unqualified. The daughter of a friend of mine is trying to set herself up as a 'femininity and mindset coach' WTF?? And she is paying £700 a month to this OTHER coach. So it does seem to operate as some sort of culty MLM. All full of bullshit woo woo phrases. If you say, 'I can't afford it,' you're apparently not a 'soul client' and 'money is everywhere - you just have to ask for it.' Oh right. I should tell the people who come to the foodbank every week they should be asking The Universe and money will be bestowed upon them. Hmm

I know someone who has just set herself up doing this. It follows other failed ventures, which doesn’t exactly inspire confidence in her skills!

Ladybug123 · 30/04/2021 06:15

This is so refreshing. A woman I know of has set herself up as a sex and relationships ‘coach’. £150 an hour for a session (hundreds for a ‘course’) with someone who hasn’t got a bloody clue about life, she’s an absolute narcissist, liar and fantasist. Claims to have been doing it for ten years, it’s been four months. It’d be hilarious if it didn’t have the ability to be so damaging to vulnerable people.

ShirleyPhallus · 30/04/2021 06:24

I was wondering this myself. I know a few people who have set up like this and they’re all absolutely awful at life advice, the worst people you’d ever choose to go to for advice.

The main stay of their business offerings seems to be cringey memes on a “business” page.

LivinLaVidaLoki · 30/04/2021 06:25

I've a relative who has gone into life coaching. Did some course online and is now "certified" joined some network and is charging hundreds to help women be successful entrepreneurs.
Ironic, given she's 3 completely failed businesses.

Ladybug123 · 30/04/2021 06:31

Exactly this. I can’t imagine anyone less qualified to give vulnerable women advice. She has a series of failed enterprises behind her and failed relationships. She moves from victim of these relationships to empowered woman. It’s nonsense. She’s all over my Instagram feed pouting at the camera. I’m watching with some kind of fascinated shock. But all I keep thinking of is that I hope vulnerable women aren’t seriously giving this narcissist money!

I’m an accredited coach. It’s a tool used in my line of work. And offered to staff for free. It’s terrifying that these people are out there.

Ladybug123 · 30/04/2021 06:32

Sounds like we all know the same woman 🤣🤣🤣! Just shows there’s a ‘type’ for this!

Sumasi · 30/04/2021 09:56

Someone I know has set up as a life coach. I actually find it heartbreaking as all of the other ‘coaches’ she trained with have encouraged her, and she’s given up her job. Terrifying, she’s such a vulnerable person, a bit lost and struggling with her mental health. Her FB feed is full of memes and they all post on each other’s feeds about how amazing they are. It breaks my heart a bit as I know it’s not going to work :/
