What time do your kids go to bed? Circa 10 and 8 year olds?

I'm in 'discussion' with mine. 😁 So I thought I'd canvas opinion.

Anyone?

At 8 they’d have been bed @ 7pm lights out 7:30pm.
At 10 bed @ 8 pm lights out 8:30pm.

We’ve always been very firm about bedtimes and based it on what we felt was right for our family. Couldn’t give a flying fig what others were doing as we weren’t parenting them. Which was pretty much how we responded to the “but everyone else...” arguments (but less harsh!).

Ltdannygreen · 07/02/2021 22:38

@NoKnit oh they do, it’s just if dd wakes up to early then she wants breakfast earlier so she makes all the noise in the world trying to wake me up. Also they can’t have one day without arguing 🤨

My 12yo is a lightweight and still takes himself to bed by 8pm or he knows he can't cope the next day (he's still in school too)

I need my evening peace quite frankly.
Mine are 8 and 5 and share a room. They go up at 7pm, then we read and have cuddles etc, so by 7.30 the light is off. They both have their own cd player with headphones and listen to stories after that. They fall asleep whilst listening.
When the younger is 8 I'm quite sure bedtime will be more like 8pm as they will still room share and the eldest will be 10. The youngest will always be the winner in that respect I guess Grin.

equuscaballus · 07/02/2021 22:46

7.30/8pm

I need them up at 7am without being in a foul temper!

I'm sure some kids need less sleep but mine need a lot or their behavior goes rapidly downhill!

9 year old - between 10 and 11 - up 8am - never needs waking. They're all different. 9/10 hours is perfectly fine though.

Norwayreally · 07/02/2021 23:24

My 8, 9 and 10 year olds go to bed at the same time to save arguments. They go to bed at 8 now but are allowed 30 mins to brush teeth, toilet and read in bed. It’s gradually increased over the past couple of years, it was 7:30 when my eldest was 8.

OhioOhioOhio · 07/02/2021 23:28

I'd offer half an hour earlier than I actually wanted and negotiate the other half an hour.

SatsumaFan · 07/02/2021 23:33

Mine have just turned 7 and 10.

Before lockdown it was upstairs to clean, brush teeth, read stories and get tucked in at about 7.30pm-ish. They read to me and I read to them 15 mins each, so I'd be back down about 8.30pm ish. They're avid readers so would read or chat quietly until I told them to go to sleep around 9.30 latest. Up at 7.30am.

Now tho they're just not tired. Having lots of "sleepovers" in each others' rooms. The routine is similar but a bit later. They're still giggling and chatting til around 10pm then asleep by 10.30pm. Awake between 8am - 9am.

IncludeWomenInTheSequel · 07/02/2021 23:45

They both go about 8.30.

The 8 year old will either go straight to sleep or read for 15 minutes, 10 year old will paint/draw/read/faff until about 10.

NotWithMyShoes · 08/02/2021 06:50

Mine are 8 &11. It was 8, then story for 30ish mins, but 8 year old was having difficulty waking at 630. So we’ve pushed it back to 730 for her for now and 745 for the 11 year old (mainly to save fighting over the shower! Goes without complaint at 730 if ready.)

blinkboo · 08/02/2021 07:53

Both at 7, can read or listen to audible until 8.30

RubyGoat · 08/02/2021 08:03

DD is 8, bedtime has been 7:30 for the last couple of years. She's laying down by 8 & usually asleep by 8:30, although we often get some messing about. She doesn't seem to need as much sleep as some kids though; she sometimes wakes up at 2 & we go down to find her watching TV & have to send her back to bed... she's still up for school as usual in the morning. Sometimes she wakes between 4-6 & we've had to train her to stay in bed quietly if she wakes really early. Anything after 5 & she's allowed to sit up & read, can go watch TV after 6.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 08/02/2021 08:07

8pm at the moment. 8.30 at a push. They do read for a bit.

If they have actual school to atten we are stricter on lights out.... DD1 (9yo, Yr5) has a tendency to get caught up in a book!)

DelurkingAJ · 08/02/2021 08:19

DS1 is 8 and bedtime is 8 (and has been for a long time). He’s a lark so awake early regardless of what is necessary (and so very cheerful with it, the rest of us, all owls, find it almost difficult!). We are getting less strict about it though and I certainly don’t fuss if he’s not in bed before 8:30.

reluctantbrit · 08/02/2021 08:43

8 years - 8pm

10 years - 8.30pm

But DD always needed lots of sleep and had to go up early to go to a childminder before school.

She is 13 now and is in bed around 9pm with lights out as she gets up at 7am (even in lockdown, outside lockdown it would be 6.45am).
