Ok, I am a music lover, i have a significant CD collection amassed over my youth (probably 200+) and a part of me cannot bear to get rid of it! \

But I cannot afford to go onto spotify, neither can I be bothered to spend the tens of hours it would take me to burn it onto a hard drive. bear in mind some are also scratched and when I have tried to copy them they fail and the whole process is really frustrating.

I no longer have the cases. Just the discs. part of me wants to be gone from them but I can't bear to do it! but they are one of the piles of junk messing up my house. I still love music but listen a lot less than I used to, just on youtube these days. There's no guarantee youtube will stay around forever and give free music forever and it has annoying ads.

Suggestions welcome please.... :) thank you!!

I still buy cds but put the discs into cds cases holding up to 20, 40 or 80 saves loads of space, I love my cds.
@LunaHeather I can't tel if you're joking or not lol but if posing a philosophical question then yes absolutely anything you would be devastated to lose you should have in multiple places which is why I store photographs locally, in the cloud and print them out. Music I'm not precious about as said in my previous post, record labels will protect that!
I genuinely don't know who owns the cloud if it's not ithing

But I hanker for a simpler world. I want the CD in my hand. If a band chooses not to make them, I'm unlikely to listen.

The 1975 even make cassettes, which really surprised me.

If I lose things, I lose them. I'm in a very Stoic/Buddhist phase with regards to possessions but I like to have less involvement with computers where possible.

And I'm limiting my online time so I'm off now. But yes, OP, if you can get the CDs stored in a small way, I'd keep them.

You could find out if any nurseries or primary schools in your area could use them for craft work. It’s amazing what you can use a CD for. Rainbow fish anyone?

@LunaHeather I see, sorry I wasn't poking fun, it's a good question! I asked if it was a philosophical question because the cloud is basically someone else's computer. There isn't one cloud, there are thousands of companies that own massive servers so you basically upload it to one (or more!) of those companies, the benefit being if your computer breaks beyond use and you haven't saved elsewhere, you've lost the data, but in the cloud the companies are backing up the data, you can re-download and it saves space on your devices. It's quite safe too because the data often isn't saved in bulk but encrypted and dispersed all over the world, some some parts of your document might be in Germany, another in France until you request it and bring it together.

So if digitising, it's worth having local and cloud copies. Though a CD is a thing, it is just binary 0s and 1s, it can corrupt just as a computer file can, that's why I don't really understand the nostalgia for them (except the artwork).

My partner had literally tonnes when he moved in with me and I said no chance are these going in the lounge there was far too many
So he downloaded some on iTunes each month and at the same time music magpied the actual discs
It was gradual but we just don't have room for them all and if we put them in the loft they'd still be there now!

Time40 · 08/02/2021 00:47

@user85963842 thanks for the information about photo storage. I worry about this, and my DP says I'm neurotic, but now I think I'm right to worry. I do back ups, but I'm going to take further measures.

Working in digital preservation sounds quite interesting, actually! If you did an AMA thread, I'd read it.

VanGoghsDog · 08/02/2021 00:57

I put mind into folders, they take up far less room.
I do listen to Spotify but I hate subscriptions so it's only the free one with adverts and no idea if you can listen to whole albums.

I bought three new CDs last week, I just can't get into digital.

Now, the question is, what do I do with my old vinyl? Not had a record player for over thirty years and still got the records!

I can't remember a CD failing though it just happened at mum's.

But I would much rather buy a replacement if needed than go through all that faff.

It may be because my computer is more than 10 years old but it's a battle to get the damn thing switched on some days. All this digitising of everything drives me nuts.

user85963842 · 08/02/2021 10:45

@LunaHeather if they continue to make CDs of course, they will reduce over time. Yes exactly tech degrades and is in constant need of replacement, that's why I'm very happy to stream, I haven't ripped a CD in over a decade, I can't be arsed with that!

I did think they'd stop CDs but not sure now. If the 1975 think it's worth selling cassettes...

user85963842 · 08/02/2021 11:05

@LunaHeather some artists don't create their music in CD format already (just as many don't do cassettes) some artists do vinyl still. I would expect to see a continued reduction in CD sales, there will always be the nostalgic and hobby group, but overall it will reduce it already has dramatically. But hopefully you'll be able to get your replacements on music magpie from people selling their collection lol. But ongoing I think future music wont be in CD format very often and continually reduce.

Yes, I know, I was moaning about that earlier...? Sometimes I feel like my posts are invisible on here.

@LunaHeather sorry but I don't remember every single post each user has posted before replying, I take each reply as it comes, no need to be rude we're discussing CDs not politics!

Sorry, you replied to that one earlier.

SciFiScream · 08/02/2021 12:02

We bought a "cocktail audio" and loaded all of our CDs onto it. It's like a digital jukebox. Could you do that?
Still have the CDs though. We've put them all into those flip though CD cases and packed the boxes away.

VanGoghsDog · 08/02/2021 12:39

My favourite band does vinyl, CDs, cassettes and recently a DVD too. They've obviously drawn the line on VHS/Betamax tapes.....

reprehensibleme · 08/02/2021 12:47

DH ripped all ours - took him ages (well, it didn't actually take him ages, he just set them going and went off to do something else) - we probably have close to 500 cds between us. We actually seem to listen to music more now - just set it off on Sonos speaker in the kitchen and play the collection randomly - brilliant. BUT - we still have the cds, couldn't bear to get rid Grin. So I guess that doesn't help you much.
