False economy?

Sorry if this has already been done. Im interested to see if you think theres anything that's worth spending the extra money on? My example is dishwasher tablets. I'd always bought supermarket own brand until they only had Fairy left and I have to say that it's been a revelation! My glasses are proper sparkly now and my dishwasher smells lovely. Also I think cheap toilet paper is generally crap (excuse the pun)

Fairy washing up liquid is definitely better, I find I use twice as much of other brands.

Blush Clearly I have created worlds most boring thread Blush

I'm a baked bean snob, think more pricey ones are often nicer.

Also toothbrushes.

ItsDinah · 07/02/2021 17:42

Buy cheap, buy twice. I cost things per use and agree about very cheap toilet paper and Fairy liquid. The expensive things I've really been taken aback to discover worked out cheaper were some cosmetics and toiletries. For my skin and everyday make-up an expensive Lancome cleanser works out cheaper than any of the cheaper ones I've tried and I've tried lots.

Struggling to think of anything. I've mostly been converted to exploring non-brand options for food and consumables, so I get whichever I end up finding best for my needs and budget without really registering if it's branded or not...

I probably hold a different view on appliances.

user141631863 · 07/02/2021 18:03

I think I prefer Branston baked beans to Heinz at the moment, but I don't mind unbranded depending on ingredients...

wellthatsunusual · 07/02/2021 18:06

I buy Branston beans, Green Giant corn and Birds Eye peas. But those are probably the only three brands that I regularly buy where I think nothing else comes close.

With some things I actively prefer the cheaper version. Iceland make the best oven chips by quite some distance, and they're about half the price of other brands.

wellthatsunusual · 07/02/2021 18:08

Cheap shoes are generally a false economy, but I fully understand that better quality ones can be so expensive that they're out of reach for people, even if in the long term they are cheaper.

foxhat · 07/02/2021 18:18

Sharwoods curry sauce.
Posh soy sauce.
Higgidy pies.

recreationalcalpol · 07/02/2021 18:25

Just bought a Miele tumble dryer to replace my Bosch which blew up after 5 years. Hoping it’s a good investment!

LynetteScavo · 07/02/2021 18:27

Cheap sellotape where you can never find the ends.

Cheap school shoes

Cheap baking trays

Cheap pillows

I'm quite happy with Aldi dishwasher tablets, ketchup, mayo etc

wellthatsunusual · 07/02/2021 18:28

Cheap sellotape where you can never find the ends.

And worse, it does that splitting lengthways thing when you eventually do find it. Angry

Plussizejumpsuit · 07/02/2021 18:34

I agree that cheap dishwasher tablets aren't great. I also think the more expensive dry pasta, say the sainsburys extra special or whatever they call it is worth the extra.

boredwiththeoldname · 07/02/2021 18:36

Supermarket own brand instant coffee is invariably dire.

polkadotpjs · 07/02/2021 18:36

Shampoo - yet I keep trying cheap stuff then not using half of it !

DavidsSchitt · 07/02/2021 18:46

"Sharwoods curry sauce."

What about it? Compared to...? I find it as nasty as all the others although it's been a long time since I've tried any.

Bin liners. Never buy the cheap ones

Hoppinggreen · 07/02/2021 18:52

Agree, definitely bin liners

Notgotanyidea · 07/02/2021 18:55

Conditioner. I have long, thick hair. Cheap conditioner just doesn’t work as well. I look like a scarecrow.

loobylou10 · 07/02/2021 19:02

Never ever buy cheap coffee, washing up liquid or baked beans.

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 07/02/2021 19:05

Almost everything. I prefer to buy less, but better quality. I don't buy own brand food or dirt cheap clothes / shoes no matter how much people say it's just as good.

In regards to clothes, Next / M&S basics or TK Maxx are only a little more expensive but hold shape better and last longer.

Sorry I thought my post was self-explanatory. Compared to other curry sauces. I think it's OK to offer ideas which only a percentage of the population enjoy. I don't think we were being asked for false economies regarding things that everyone needs or wants.

Blibbyblobby · 07/02/2021 20:03

Cilit bang! Nothing else comes close.

DavidsSchitt · 07/02/2021 22:03

No, I know what you are saying about different peoples tastes but I don't understand how it's a false economy. Isn't it £1 a jar or something...Just like the other brands are?

40somethingJBJ · 07/02/2021 22:11

I agree with toilet roll, although I still buy it from Aldi, I just get their top of the range stuff! I won’t compromise on antiperspirant - have to have Sanex or Right Guard; the cheap stuff just doesn’t do the job as well.

Also, tea. It’s got to be Yorkshire tea. I’ve tried pretty much everything else and I just can’t find anything I like as much.

caringcarer · 07/02/2021 22:18

I must have Lavazza coffee beans and Dove liquid soap in cloakrooms to stop my hands drying out with constant washing them and 4 ply toilet paper, apart from that not too fussy.
