Box room nurseries

Does anyone have their nursery in a box room/very small bedroom. Really stuck for ideas and don’t know how I’m gonna fit anything in.
Would love to see some pictures for inspiration

Get a cot rather than a cot/cotbed.
You don't need a changing table, get a bigger chest of drawers and change baby on a mat on the floor. They can't roll off the floor and injure themselves!

I second getting a cotbed. Ours was used until youngest was four, so work out great value too. We had a cot-top changer that laid across the cot, taking out the need for a change table (although floor work if you’re happy to bend over). We also bought large baskets that fitted under the cot bed to keep most of the stuff we needed in. You can get proper under-cot storage drawers, but baskets were cheaper and I am still using them as airing cupboard storage now, eight years on.

CaffeineInfusion · 07/02/2021 17:28

My teenager is still in the box room.🤷‍♀️

1 x bed
1 x wardrobe
1 x drawer unit
Wall shelves
Under bed storage boxes.
Changed door to open outwards rather than in the room.

Just don't buy too much stuff. We never use half the amount we think we will.

We have a cotbed, large chest of drawers (really don't need a wardrobe for baby clothes), a nursing chair and a small table. He's a toddler now, so the nursing chair is coming out and a sensory tent going in it's place

bourbonne · 07/02/2021 17:35

I thought everyone used their box room Confused babies are small! Mine was in our room till almost a year old anyway. The box room easily fits a cot, small chest of drawers and a chair. Toys are stored in the living room. Never had a changing table.

Thefaceofboe · 07/02/2021 20:22

@bourbonne my box room is very small! With an awkward window and radiator. The cot placement is fine, but every else will be tricky. The rest of our house is fairly small too so really need to think of how to use the space the best we can.

My little girls nursery is just over 2m x 2m so I had to work the space hard! Take a look at the Mokee mini cot. It is the only cot i found that was the smaller size but also converted to a cot bed. We also got the Mokee cot top changer which we are still using at 22 months, it has been so useful. I got a wardrobe with 3 drawers underneath which has given ample storage. We also have a full height bookcase in there which gives us space for books plus baskets for toiletries and toys. The best thing we did was get a plumber in to relocate the radiator to beneath the window to allow for 3 walls to have furniture on. Later on we also put a chair in the last available floor space because she was a bad sleeper so I spent many hours sat in there nursing her back to sleep Grin It's a bit annoyingly in the way but handy for reading books now and not a big deal to move if needed

ireallyamthewalrus · 07/02/2021 21:00

Could you post a floor plan/dimensions? People may be able to suggest ways to maximise the space.

superduster · 07/02/2021 21:03

We had a cotbed, a chair and a large chest of draws in our box room when it was a nursery.

CaurnieBred · 07/02/2021 21:04

We just had the cot, a rocking chair and an Ikea single Pax wardrobe with a top shelf, two hanging rails and drawers at the bottom. We also had a cot top changing table. This was enough to hold all her stuff.
Once DD grew out of the cot, we swapped to an Ikea toddler bed which she was in until she was around 8.

IKEA do very small wardrobes for children which are perfect for tiny bedrooms. You can use the top for storage and they don’t dominate the room. The added bonus is that when they’re still white small, they can choose their own clothes independently.

Normandy144 · 07/02/2021 21:26

We have a box room for our youngest with the stair bulk head box in it for extra annoyance! We have a cot which transformed to a cotbed. We also had a wardrobe and chest of drawers with a removable changing top on the top. I think it was mamas and papas. the changing top can be removed and then you just have a chest of drawers. We are now in the process of remodeling the room to get the box removed and then a wardrobe fitted in its place.

Conundrumofsorts · 07/02/2021 21:29

We have a cot top changer and a chair in our nursery, the cot also has under bed drawers.

LazyName · 07/02/2021 21:35

Someone I know has a floating wardrobe type thing - basically the pole attached to wall to hang clothes on, it’s jungle theme so the pole was a stick/branch, looks really cute. Or just use drawers, which the top of can double up as a shelf/table for other bits (like a toy basket/teddies/etc).
Wouldn’t bother with a wardrobe they aren’t really that necessary even less so when you’re limited for space and have awkward windows! Also changing table seems to be a waste of time generally just change baby on a mat on floor/sofa/bed wherever we are.

Conundrumofsorts · 07/02/2021 21:36

I have a bad back so need a changing top, I think it depends on circumstances.

LazyName · 07/02/2021 21:37

Also maybe a sliding drawer under the cot - depending what cot you go for but some do include them/come as extra with the set. Good for easy storage for more toys/clothes etc

Crossing over with conundrumofsorts - great minds Smile

@Thefaceofboe am I right in thinking your baby has not yet arrived? My experience was that the need for space and storage increases gradually. To begin with, the cot, pram and bath were our big items. Pram lived by the front door, baby bath lived inside the big bath. Clothes and nappies and muslins etc fitted inside a couple of deep drawers in our room, which was also where we had the cot and kept the changing mat. There were no toys during the newborn stage other than a few small gifts. Then we got a collapsible baby gym which lived in the living room. Then a highchair for the kitchen. That was mostly it for a long time.

Then as toddlerdom approaches, the number of toys increases exponentially, and they tend to be everywhere during the day as toddler play cannot be contained, but they can all be shoved in a box or three at night to give you the temporary semblance of a peaceful, orderly home to spend the evening in.

My impression is that magazines and websites go on about "the nursery" mostly as something to write about and flog advertising features or product placement. I'm not convinced that most people have the space, resources or inclination to recreate this. I've certainly never set foot in one like that. I think it's more normal that the whole of your living configuration evolves to cater for each stage in your baby's development.

For what it's worth, my box room/baby's room is roughly 2x2m.

Lessismore2056 · 07/02/2021 21:44

We have a cot bed, then at the end of the cot there is a chest of drawers although you may fit a wardrobe there. We also had cupboards built on the wall, above the cot. They went all along that wall and round onto the wall with the door.
We then have a flat book shelf thing from Argos which has some knobs on to hang clothes from on the wall opposite the cot.

Thefaceofboe · 07/02/2021 21:48

@bourbonne No, I’m only very early into my pregnancy but off work and just trying to get some ideas and your message really helped, thanks. I do want to keep everything as minimalistic as possible! It’s so hard to know what’s ‘essential’ and what’s just gonna be a waste of money.

@DreamingofThailand I’ll have a look at that cot, thanks! We have an IKEA Kallax unit so this will be good for storage Grin

bourbonne · 07/02/2021 21:55

Glad to be of service Grin just remember, the shops will still be open after the baby's born (well, at least that's what we used to say pre-Covid! But Amazon will still be open for business...).

IKEA is great for baby furniture, I second or third that.

ForeverBubblegum · 07/02/2021 21:56

We have a load of ikea spice racks on one wall that we use for books (stood parallel to wall, so you see front cover not spine). They hold a surprising amount, but only sticks out about 5cm, so doesn't reduce floor space.

Katiec89 · 07/02/2021 22:03

We brought the aldi baby furniture. Cotbed has a big underbed drawer. There's a double shelved wardrobe with drawers at the bottom and changing unit is on top of the chest of drawers. Really pleased with it and it was a bargain.
