You know when everything goes through a spell of being on its last legs? I moved in 15 years ago so everything has lasted well but I need to replace all of the following. They are all still working, they just have with broken bits.

The living room/ hall laminate floor - coming up by back door and rotting underneath.
Oven - broken grill, main hob ring at front has no temperate control
Fridge freezer- all plastic drawers in freezer and salad bowl have cracks and seals are broken.
Shed - floor rotted, and bottom layer.
My face - need Botox as I last had it a year ago. I look shocking all of a sudden).

I can probably save up £500 every 6 months. Which order please helpful ones?

Don’t just replace the floor. Why is it rotting and where is the water getting in (it must be getting in somewhere of the floor smells after a wet spell). Is the water getting in around your back door or somewhere else?

I’d say as 1) you need to work out what the underlying problem is which is causing the floor to rot and find out how much this will cost to address and how urgent it is (there may be other damage which isn’t yet visible to you) before deciding on the order of any of them. No point replacing the floor until you’ve addressed the underlying cause of the rot.

floor
oven
shed
fridge

Freezer seal as you describe wouldn't be overly urgent to me, but replacing the drawer will cost very little and be significantly less annoying.

Oven is a safety issue - if parts of it are going the rest could too and end up burning down the house.

Next fridge. Although honestly if money’s right I’d look at getting two basic refurbished ones which means you might manage to get them both together.

Take up the laminate where it’s rotting and bin it. It’ll look rotten with just the concrete but you won’t be breathing mould. Cover the concrete with a towel or sheet, see if it gets damp too. If it does then just replacing the laminate won’t help anyway.

Face - “you look tired.” “Yes. Been busy. You know how it is.” Unless your lack of Botox is going to actively lose money (are you an actress?).

Botox is not the cheapest as its an ongoing cost to upkeep every 6 months or so.

I agree. The others will be fixed for years but the botox is only temporary.

@Thewinterofdiscontent

Thank you all.

In fairness Botox is the cheapest at £150 and stops people telling me how tired I look all the time. I look dreadful at the moment generally. I don’t do Insta or selfies of any sort but I do have a job where looking fresh is quite important.
The fridge seals still stick but are split so looks horrid and bits have git spilt inside.
I think maybe oven but tempted to leave it a year and get new flooring as that’s the most expensive. The floor underneath is concrete but the laminate is rotting so the room smells after a wet spell.

Maybe oven. Or floor then.

If you are a sex worker then Botox should be tax deductible.
Dogsarehairy · 06/02/2021 20:19

Oh, I didnt think of actress

SciFiScream · 06/02/2021 20:38

How often so you need the grill and how many other working hobs do you have?

Our fridge freezer is in a similar state. The freezer drawers are held together with duct tape and we regularly have to remove ice from the base (it's supposed to be frost free).

We've replaced the seals and light bulb in the FF and are holding onto it until we do some work in our kitchen. It was bought brand new in 2007.

Is your FF still maintaining the correct temperatures?

Do you intend to repair or replace the shed?

Could you lift the laminate and live without a floor covering until you find out why it's rotting?

Can't decide order until I know the answers to these but I think:

FF
Oven
Shed
Floor
Face

The laminate is rotting because it goes up to the back door but there’s no seal (the back door is watertight though). It’s the main door and straight into the only living/ dining space in the house so has lots of traffic and wet boots and rain blown in over the years.

It’s done really well. Was guaranteed for 10 years and has been down 15. The laminate itself is in great shape in the rest of the room but where it’s moved the water has got in by the door.

Sadly not an actress and my days of putting out for money are long gone. I’m disappointed no one thinks Botox is worth it. You do need upkeep but less and less and it makes such a difference to my frowny visage.

Oven first, for definite. Faulty oven is a potential fire hazard. The rest will pale into insignificance if your house burns down.

Plonque · 06/02/2021 21:02

I'd check the rotting floor next, rot can spread and cause major structural problems if left.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 06/02/2021 21:56

Plonque It’s the laminate rotting. Fitted over on concrete. I’m in a new build built 17 years ago.
