Menstrual cup vs period pants

I'm looking to make a more environmentally friendly choice than pads and tampons but I'm undecided between period pants or a menstrual cup.

My flow is light to medium and I don't like the "wet" feeling of a pad. So, please can I have some advice from experienced users - do period pants feel wet or are they good at sucking everything up? Are menstrual cups akin to a tampon in that you can't feel them once in correctly?

I know everyone is different, but some general anecdotal advice would be great and I can't find any posts comparing the 2 methods. Thanks in advance.

I haven't tried period pants so I can't comment on how they feel, but my reason for not trying them is because I don't like the feeling of the blood coming out (sorry if that sounds grim!).
I have a mooncup which I'm really happy with. It probably took one period to really get used to it but no problem since and I've used it for many years now so I'm very pleased with my environmental impact and money saved. I can't feel it at all when it's in, and I leave it for 24 hours so much more practical than a tampon. I empty and replace during my daily shower which I find much easier than when going to the toilet.

I’ve tried several moon cups just can’t get on with them. I’ve not had kids so maybe that helps but they are quite big to fold up and get in , and never worked out how to get them out unless fully open like an upside down umbrella! Ouch.

I’ve been using reusable pads but just got a period pant to try. Can’t comment on wetness yet but feels much less bulky than reuseable pad that you can see with tight clothing.

That's great thanks. @StressedTired is it safe to leave them in for 24 hours- no toxic shock risk like with tampons? Sorry if that sounds like a stupid question!

I haven't tried period pants. But have a moon cup and I love it. I wasn't sure as I've never been able to use tampons so a bit wary of moon cup and no toxic shock risk.

I can leave mine in for 8/12 hours as I have a heavy flow and it fills up sorry for tmi. I've been using it 2years now sometimes I find it hard to put in but I much prefer it to pads tho. If you do get one read instructions I even looked up utube videos about it before I bought one. There's so many types I got mine in boots but think super drug do softer silicone ones.

I feel cleaner using the moon cup. I didn't think I would love it so much my sister tried but didn't like it so went back to tampons.

I want to love the mooncup but it leaks no matter what I do. I'm thinking of reusable pads but I'm put off for the same reasons! Not sure how 'safe' I'd feel in period pants either. It's a flipping minefield Grin

I have just bought a new mooncup and it's fab; I don't even know it's there half the time. It has a bigger capacity than tampons and doesn't dry out your mucous membranes. The cup I had before was forever leaking though, so it's important to get the right fit.

I use the Saalt soft menstrual cup. Try the "Put a cup in it" quiz to see which suits you best.

I also don't like the feeling of blood coming out of me and there is obviously none of that with the cup. It did take a few cycles to get used to inserting it but now it is super easy. I can't speak for others brands but Saalt has a great FB community for asking questions, sharing advice etc.

Thanks everybody, it sounds like a cup is the way to go! @SuperPixie247 thanks for the put a cup in it recommendation- I'm off to try it and find the cup for me!

I use both. I have extremely heavy periods though so I need the pants as a back up. I have a moo cup which is fine and a softer one I prefer. Eco cup or something? I will check the name. Period pants are expensive and so foolishly I bought cheaper Cheeky Wipes brand first. I found the Cheeky Wipes one really uncomfortable and not very reliable. I really like the Modi Bodi brand but they are pretty spendy.
