Sainsburys home delivery - what happens?

kirkandpetal · 06/02/2021 16:51

Finally got around to setting this up and ordering our first delivery.

So the items will be delivered unpacked and I've seen these arriving at other houses in 'trays' but what actually happens when the driver turns up at the door? Do you take the trays through to your kitchen, empty them quickly onto countertop and then hand them back to the driver as quickly as poss?

I know this might seem a really stupid and obvious question but just want to check. I've looked at the site FAQs but can't actually see an answer which helps me on this specifically!

Never done Sainsbury’s specifically but I’d imagine they’re all much of a muchness. Yes, you unload the trays as quickly as you can and then hand them back. The driver tells you if there are any substitutions and you decide if you want them, and if there was anything just not available before you start. Then you unload it all and sign for the delivery. 👍

We use Tesco. He goes around to the back door nearer the kitchen and the trays have liners so he steps back while we lift the whole liners and contents out. I have some IKEA bags in the utility so decant into those if they don't provide tray liners.

Clymene · 06/02/2021 16:59

The trays don't have liners. He puts one in my porch, stands back, I unload contents into bags (frozen food and meat is separately bagged so you can just lift that out.

When you've emptied one tray, you stand back, he puts the next one on top, repeat.

You get a receipt emailed in advance which details the subs. If you don't want any, just leave them in the tray and you get refunded v quickly.

If you put a mask on, so will the driver

Clymene · 06/02/2021 17:00

So basically take your bags to the door rather than carting the trays to your kitchen!

megletthesecond · 06/02/2021 17:02

I fling it into my porch as fast as I can. Except the fragile stuff which I get my teen to take a put away.

Stripyhoglets1 · 06/02/2021 17:02

I unload the trays just inside my front door into big bags for life/ ikea bags.

BearSoFair · 06/02/2021 17:04

I unpack into bags at the door rather than take trays to the kitchen. Round here drivers tend to stack all the trays up then step back, so unload one, put it aside, onto the next while he waits at the gate. One brought them a tray at a time but it was a bit faffy with the back and forth so easier when they stack them all at the start!

Fourcolourpens · 06/02/2021 17:10

Driver puts crate on my doorstep, I take everything out and stack it up on the stairs behind me, driver swaps crate for the next one and repeat. Driver gives me the receipt and if there are any subs I don’t want or stuff I decide I don’t want I give it back and that’s it.

I don’t get a big delivery, so usually only 3 crates. I then take stuff through to the kitchen at my leisure..

Takes a couple of minutes, I try and be quick as I know the drivers are stretched, we have a quick chat whilst the unpacking is happening, with my dog barking madly in the living room.

HandsFaceSpaceHopper · 06/02/2021 17:16

Our dining table is fairly near the front door so I just take the whole crate in and unpack it onto the table then put it away later.
My back would kill me if I had to bend down to decant it into bags by the door.

AwkwardSquad · 06/02/2021 17:17

We grab each tray as it’s set down on the step, take through to kitchen and unload super quick then return tray. Our kitchen is only a few steps from the front door and we’re practiced at fast unloading, delivery drivers seem happy with it.

ProperVexed · 06/02/2021 17:18

My Sainsbury's driver puts the crates on the doorstep. I quickly decant into two washing baskets, and the floor if lots. I then say farewell, and move the baskets to the kitchen to put away.

AwkwardSquad · 06/02/2021 17:19

In fact the drivers are always really nice, polite and efficient in my experience.

Floralnomad · 06/02/2021 17:20

We have Tesco , no bags / liners , and we take the trays to the kitchen unload and then go back for the next one . No way am I decanting it all into bags in the hall and then having to do it all again in the kitchen .

kirkandpetal · 06/02/2021 17:30

Brilliant - thanks everyone. Feel a bit more prepared as to what to expect now. IKEA bags at the ready!!

How are all these people carrying the crates through? Ours are way too heavy and awkward to get through front door/hallway/living room door/kitchen door etc.

We decant into bags at the front door then carry bags through.

AlCalavicci · 06/02/2021 17:50

I use Tescos and have always been told I can not take the crates into the house so like PP the driver puts the crate on the door step < I unload on to the dinning table (right by the front door ) then put it away once he / she has gone .
Tray liners are fine and make it much quicker if they dont overload them but 8 times out of 10 they are too heavy for me to trust the liner wont rip or there is stuff that will get squished , bread, eggs , 10 kg cat food and 6 bottles of beer in the last one I got . Hmm
Check the swaps carfully I have accepted stuff in the past then realised I did not want it .
I have always found all of the drivers really friendly and chatty

TheDogsMother · 06/02/2021 17:54

DH and I lift a couple of crates just inside the hallway, decant the contents, hand them back to the driver and lift next couple of crates in. We use a plastic laundry basket that we can quickly fill up along with some carrier bags. We've got pretty quick at it now Grin.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 06/02/2021 19:06

We have trolley bags which we disinfect with spray. They are by the door on delivery day and we load the trays into them, take them into the kitchen, spray the co tents, spray the bags again and put away for the next time. Trays don’t come into the house.

H1978 · 06/02/2021 19:07

We also empty into bags at the front door. I have the kids load the bags and I carry the bags into the kitchen. It’s a very efficient process.

Sainsbury’s will send you an email before hand with any subs and an e-receipt. You can refuse any subs you don’t want and they will refund you.

rachelgreensroom · 06/02/2021 19:23

I take the crates through one at a time and unpack quickly in the kitchen

HidingInTheLight · 06/02/2021 19:33

I find sainsburys very efficient, more than Tesco. You can also refuse anything else if it’s not up to your standard - I got sent a really squashed loaf of bread and before I even said anything the driver said “I’m refunding that, it’s not in a good condition” but let me keep it anyway.

poppyzbrite4 · 06/02/2021 19:38

Mine comes bagged up in crates. The delivery person takes the crates to the front door and steps back. I take out the bags and put them in the hallway and the driver goes. I hand back the bags and get my money back at the next delivery. This isn't happening at the moment, because they're not taking bags so I've put them somewhere and will hand them back once restrictions are lifted. I then get a refund on all the bags.

buttonsbows · 06/02/2021 19:49

I use Tesco and Sainsbury's. I carry one crate into the kitchen, quickly unload onto the dining table then go back for the next crate. Only takes a few minutes. Drivers are always friendly and polite and happy to take back unwanted substitutes or damaged items. Always remember to check eggs for breakages! Any items damaged in transit will get refunded.

Ernieshere · 06/02/2021 19:51

I use a washing basket as well.
