Why does my shampoo always stick to my hair?!

Yet again tonight I've washed my hair and it's looks in a even worse state than before I got in the shower! My hair just looks greasy all over and feels sticky. I'm 100% washing everything out of it so why does it do this?!

It's only certain brands of shampoo and conditioner that seem to do it and not all the time. I've been using Elvive dream lengths and my hair was feeling great then all of a sudden it's started sticking to my hair. I used to condition all of my hair but stopped thinking that was the cause but it's clearly not as I've only put conditioner on my ends tonight and it looks digusting! WHY?! Confused

Maybe it’s too heavy for your hair, too many silicones
Try sulphate free shampoo they are more cleansing
Use a clarifying shampoo eg bumble & bumble Sunday shampoo

saffire · 05/02/2021 22:28

I've been having the same recently too! And it seems no matter how much I rinse my hair the water by the plug is very scummy.

Spotsandstars · 05/02/2021 22:30

I knew it was going to be elvive when I clicked this post. 25 years ago I was using it as a teen. Suddenly my hair was sticky etc no matter what I did. Randomly my dad was watching a watchdog type programme and it was about the brand and this problem. Never used L'Oréal again, no more problems.

I can't use Dove shampoo because of this, my hair goes vile and greasy

Northernsoullover · 05/02/2021 22:32

My current shampoo is doing this! The other day my hair was sticky so my thought was I hadn't rinsed it properly. So I used it today and took extra care rinsing and its exactly the same Sad

Alternate shampoos to avoid build up. How much shampoo are you using? You actually need a teeny tiny amount. Get tiny bit in your hand and foam it up with water before you do your hair.

JackieeWeaver · 05/02/2021 22:38

My favourite for no build up is Aussie Mega shampoo. My hair feels really clean after using it

tessiegirl · 05/02/2021 22:55

I had this a few years back. I read you should use a bit of washing up liquid to get rid of the build up. It worked!

See I had to stop using it as my hair felt awful with Aussie shampoo
MadameButterface · 06/02/2021 12:05

Cut out sulphates and silicones. Try imbue or noughty, they say for curly hair but work fine on straight hair too, and no build up. Or XHC (can get it from b&m, poundland etc)

You will have to check styling products for silicones too, as these will build up even more it you are no longer using sulphates. Please don’t clarify with washing up liquid as above, it’s awful for your hair. Do a final rinse with a capful of apple cider vinegar in a litre jug of water instead.

I find I have to swap brands every 3 months or so.

KindergartenKop · 06/02/2021 15:43

Do one wash with washing up liquid. It works a treat.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 15:54

That’s shocking advice, washing up liquid is too astringent & an irritant for eyes
It’ll really dry and tangle hair
There are clarifying shampoos to cleanse and remove build up
Really shouldn’t be reaching for the fairy

Really? When I was trying to go from fuschia pink hair back to a normal colour, my hairdresser said I'd have to use something really harsh on my hair to get as much excess colour out as possible.

She recommended either washing up liquid or baby shampoo for removing cradle cap – I did a once-over with Fairy and my hair ended up feeling like a ball of elastic bands.

100% would not recommend!

Very dilute apple cider vinegar (one part ACV to 5 parts water) applied to the scalp and massaged, left for 3 minutes and rinsed will clarify and remove buildup without ruining your hair.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 16:16

To Remove use colour vitamin c powder 1000mg and head & shoulders classic

Head and shoulders classic (not the 2 in 1) Mixed with Vitamin c tablets pulped to powder. Make a thick paste apply to hair for at least an hour. It’s effective nb don’t use vitamin c with added colour as that’ll add orange to your hair

Vitamin c powder

God! I'm talking about 1 wash with a bit of washing up liquid! Not telling the op to use it instead of shampoo for months. Honestly some people are so over dramatic Hmm

There is always one Grin It's perfect advice and perfectly understandable (a drop of w/up liquid added to the shampoo). Great advice btw, will definitely try it as have quite long her and constantly swapping shampoos.
HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 20:16

It’s not great advice,a harsh detergent for dishes isn’t for your hair. It’s not hard
I see all the thickos online effusing but they’re not reliable so best ignored

CreamFacedLoon · 06/02/2021 20:19

I have the exact same with Dream Lengths. It makes my hair look darker and coated in plastic, I can’t use it.

MadameButterface · 06/02/2021 21:38

I’m a hairdresser, it’s shit advice re washing up liquid. Unless you’ve used your head to clean your grill pan.

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 06/02/2021 21:44

Yup, @MadameButterface great post

tessiegirl · 10/02/2021 21:32

Ah used washing up liquid on my hair this evening. It has really worked amazingly well. So much softer! Good old fairy! Would highly recommend as a one off!!!!!

Nunoftheother · 10/02/2021 22:57

Did you use Gorilla Glue by mistake?
