Box dye is not the same as professional dye so she’s being truthful there! Box dye causes more damage and is harder to correct.

Peppermintfluffysocks · 05/02/2021 21:32

Just make sure you use a semi permanent and not a permanent dye

Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2021 21:38

It's also ok to just wait for the hairdressers to re-open especially if she's going to be funny with you if you do put a box dye on. Don't forget your patch test if using a home one (Health and Safety) although not sure how that works without buying a box just for the test.

Not sure how a box dye causes more damage-how?

@Sparklingbrook

she's also said I shouldn't use shop-bought colours during lockdown because "they interact with our professional colours

Is that really true though? They can't be that different surely?

There is a huge difference between shop bought and professional!

Well, she would say that, wouldn't she?! Grin

There is a huge difference between shop bought and professional!

Please explain!

ConeHat · 05/02/2021 21:43

I am.really cautious with box dyes after two different brands that was semi actually left a growth line near my roots.

I noticed the first ever gray in my fringe so I might slap some on the odd grey bits in my fringe.

What is the best truly semi box dye?

PADH · 05/02/2021 21:47

@ImsorryWilson

Famous last words!

“I'd just whack it on and see what happens. If you're in the UK, it's not like you'll be seeing people or going anywhere for at least a few more weeks, and anyway it's still cold enough for hats!”

If I do that they’ll lift the lockdown in 10 days.....

Please do it!
Sparklingbrook · 05/02/2021 21:49

I suppose with all hair dyeing it depends on what your hair colour is, what you are trying to get it to be and the condition of your hair in the first place? How many greys you might want to cover etc. It's going to be different for everyone, especially if you already have a colour on. But don't know much about semi permanent dyes do they wash out over time?

On second thoughts OP wait for the hairdresser. Grin

PADH · 05/02/2021 21:52

On a serious note, I used esalon during the last lockdown and sent them photos and brief description of what I was aiming for so they could send a colour that matched, rather than guessing the outcome from boxes. Everything needed included with clear instructions. Arrived quickly. Yoir first order is discounted so works out the same price as boxed dye. Would highly recommend. I've had some terrible disasters with box dye which were expensive and time consuming to fix.

UnusuallyUsual · 05/02/2021 21:53

If its a semi permanent colour... the worst thing that'll happen is that it won't take... do a test piece underneath first.

Have you coloured your hair with a proffesional colour like this before?

Theredjellybean · 05/02/2021 21:54

My hairdresser said L'Oréal box dyes same ingredients as L'Oréal in salon products.
Difference being in salon she mixes a bespoke load of jollop for my hair colour.
She said I'd do no harm using box dye on hair in lockdown... Even though I have had mine professionally coloured once a month fir last 10yrs.
And she Was right.

Fieldsoftripe9 · 05/02/2021 22:04

The only reason salon dye is better than box dye is because with box dye you don't know the strength of the peroxide.

Usually in box dye they put a high volume hydrogen peroxide in the kit to be a one size fits all. With a dark colour for example you often only need a low 10vol peroxide to open the hair cuticle and deposit colour, but the box kits usually contains 30vol peroxide which is only really needed to go lighter and remove colour.

So you are doing extra damage when its not needed and causing underlying lift that can't be seen unless the colour is removed at a later date.

The rest is the same ingredients, its just very much a one size fits all

junebirthdaygirl · 06/02/2021 04:23

Just like Therejellybean l have mine salon coloured every 4 weeks for years
I did it myself using Nice n Easy during lockdown as genuinely l wouldn't have been able to go outside the door with the roots. My hairdresser said she was surprised it was in such a good state after lockdown. Actually l got far more compliments on my own dyed hair than l ever got from my regular salon visits!
I used an artists artist's paintbrush to put it on and tried to copy as best l could what l had seen them do ..going through each layer meticulously.
At the moment l haven't home dyed yet this time and am using the spray just along the roots on top. But l think this weekend l will go for it as no sign of them opening.
Go for a colour a little lighter than you think as deep dyed hair looks bad. Also l find l need to leave it on the roots longer than they say as mine is quite resistant at this stage. Then wash it threw the ends for the last few minutes. The conditioner they include really makes my hair feel soft and shiny.

ajs8 · 06/02/2021 04:46

The colour will have oxidised and be useless.

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 12:38

Spray on roots?

Sounds promising.....

Am so ignorant! Have no idea what’s safe on own hair.
I’d be fine with something temporary......1980s Body Shop henna is my only frame of reference!

Don't put henna on dyed hair. I did and it was a disaster and no hairdresser would see me, except to cut it all off. I was twenty and very vain about my long hair.
ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 12:48

Aha! Thank you!

Yeah, root colour spray works fine, blends in, washes out.

ImsorryWilson · 06/02/2021 12:58

Great, so it just sits on top and you can experiment?

ScrapThatThen · 06/02/2021 13:06

Semi permanent never fades at all on my hair.

Honeyroar · 06/02/2021 13:17

I used to use the root sprays, they’re good, but if you run your hands through your hair while talking, like I do, you end up with dirty hands! I box dyed mine throughout this year (id only ever had salon dyes before). They’ve been superb, and that’s on extremely long hair with hideous grey roots! I’ll definitely be using them more often post lockdown.

FredaFox · 06/02/2021 13:27

Reading with interest, I've not yet had my hair dyed since before lockdown one so my natural red roots have grown down to a nice enough balayage to my bleached hair (I was pastel pink right before lockdown) while id give a box full colour dye a go in so scared to bleach my hair myself, my roots are approaching my ears 😂dye
If go for the box option op, don't risk the premixed
I keep putting toners on to blend the blonde and ginger. I can't wait to get an all over dye!!

Londontown12 · 06/02/2021 13:37

Develop time after mixing 25 min then its oxidised !
The reason your stylist is saying u not used shop colours is because if u apply wrong colour eg permanent or wrong tone think too warm to cool this is an absolute nightmare to correct and costly and not great for hair condition please don’t do it especially as u have a semi permanent colour anyways
I’m a hairdresser xx

Vthirtyone · 06/02/2021 13:37

I'm a hairdresser, it's absolutely true that box colour is unnecessarily strong as someone said previously. However, I don't mind my clients using it once or twice in lockdown, providing they a)tell me what they used before I colour their hair b)don't balls it up and expect me to rectify it without booking and paying for my extra time.
And never use henna and then get professional colour, the combination can literally melt your hair off!
