Self isolating marathon runner. What on line workouts will help me maintain fitness?

No more running, for at least 10 days, and obviously longer if I get symptoms. Last time this happened I ended up not being able to pass through my front door for a month Shock And I put on a stone ShockShockShock

So help me please! What’s good online, there are so many, some look pretty dodgy. What have you found that is safe and effective, and actually gets you fit?

Thank you

When is your next marathon?

Redcrayons · 05/02/2021 10:28

You won’t lose much fitness in 10 days realistically.

Do you do any strength training? Good opportunity to work on your core and glutes.
A friend did a step challenge, up and down the stairs. Looked very hard (but quite boring)

10 days isn't going to impact your fitness at all I would say but exercising if you do have it will.

Oh God I sympathiseI had two weeks of this in May it was a loooong two weeks.

For the basic calorie burn, remember you burn the same number of calories walking a mile as running it, it just takes longer. So I would just make sure I walked my planned running mileage every day. A cheapo pedometer or a free step tracker app on your phone would do the job if you've not got a garmin.

Sometimes I put a play on radio 4 and walked up and down the living room listening , but mostly I used free you tube videos on the 'walk at home with Leslie sansone' channel which does on the spot type mileage.

I also did a ten minute hiit thing 3x a week from the Michael Moseley Fast exercise book to keep my aerobic fitness up, and some body weight squats etc from the runners world youtube channel such as 'top 6 quad exercises for runners'

On the first weekend I was scheduled to do a 16 mile long run and flipping heck that was a long boring evening getting that done, I think it took me about 4 1/2 hours, but my friend texted me saying if you want to be an endurance athlete, you have to learn to Endure.... Which got me through it

You did it in your house or garden? In solidarity with a running buddy who was shielding over summer, a few of us did a garden mile. It was so hard, and my hips were killing me from doing the turnaround the same way (I hadn’t realised I should have alternated clockwise/anti till too late). Kudos for 16, I nearly gave up after 5 minutes.

It is hard, I do dance-fit as it’s doable in a small space (my bedroom) followed by dancing wildly to music I like (headphones)

I can see in my Fitbit if I reach good cardio heart rates.

A bit bonkers, but I could not sit at home for 10 days

(And I get anxious if I don’t keep my fitness levels up, lockdown has been hard Sad my sport is still cancelled )

Keep it up 👍💪

I would use this time for strength and conditioning work rather than cardio. There are a number of reports of athletes struggling with long covid who exercised through covid and it having a long term impact. It feels like a risk to push your body if there is a chance you have it. You won't lose much fitness in 10 days and most races before May have been cancelled anyway. But a daily online Pilates class would help you have great stability for when you can get outside again.

thecognoscenti · 05/02/2021 14:23

You won't lose any meaningful fitness in ten days, don't panic.

I'm not a marathon runner - I am gradually working my way up from being able to do 5km to hpefully managing 10km. When I had to self-isolate I bought a skipping rope and found that to be excellent cardio exercise. You can use youtubes to learn tricks if you like, or just work on your coordination and endurance to build up the maximum length you can skip for. Your downstairs neighbour might not thank you if you are in a flat though!
