I’ve recently seen on Facebook people doing raffles through this website. I’ve just had a look and the premise seems to be you buy a desirable item for say, £500, then you sell 200 tickets at £5 each. The winner gets the prize and you pocket the profit

It website says it complies with gambling regulations and takes a 10% cut. If the winner doesn’t receive the promised prize or all the tickets don’t sell they get 75% of the ticket sales money

I guess the downside would be if you didn’t sell all the tickets and were left with the item and didn’t want to keep it. BUT I think people are buying stuff. Doing the raffle. If they don’t sell all the tickets they can return the item anyway for a refund. It must seem like a risk worth taking to make a quick buck.

I don’t have a question. I’m just quite interested. It feels “off” I guess. I associate raffles with fundraising for charities. You can use this site for charitable fundraising. But you don’t HAVE to

I’ve looked on the gambling commission website and specifically says it’s illegal to run one for personal gain. So this website can’t possibly be legal.

I’ve answered my own question. Is a scammers paradise

Yes they’re totally illegal, I usually report the ones I see because I’m a cow. But still.

Oh look although it’s a raffle, it’s not a raffle see? Confused

I see this all the time on Instagram (not arranged through that website!)

People offload their used clothes in this way - crappy things that wouldn’t have individually sold to begin with. It’s quite clever if you think about it as the person receives much more money than their junk is worth. It doesn’t sit right with me, wasn’t aware it was actually illegal

Haha yeah they’re trying to cover their back. It’s still legally classed as a raffle, whatever they try and call it.
